Thank you to everyone who made the night a success, lots of people attended, does make the venue a little cramped but I don't think it effects the players themselves on the table. It certainly makes for a great atmosphere. Thank you to Heather and Jim for hosting and for providing a lovely spread of food that went down very well
I didn't see all the matches as was busy getting beaten in two of them! Please feel free to write your own report and/or correct any inaccuracies in mine
Kev Stoner was the star of the show winning both of the finals he contested, fairly comfortably winning the Plate before a thriller in the Lower Division Singles to get the double up. Krystal Beck and Chris Cox continued their fine partnership winning the Mixed Doubles for the first time in Brighton. Chris was on the table at the right time, clearing up in the decider for a narrow win. That after Jean Brackenridge had made a near 9k break in the second leg. Not a good night for the Competition Secretary as he lost heavily to Bob Hall and Jim Millward in the Open Doubles, Jim making telling breaks in both legs and then Gary Mechan thoroughly deserved his first Captains Cup with some quality play and taking advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves. On the same table there was a high quality Over 55s final with Alan Brackenridge and Grant Tully both making 9k+ opening breaks, but Al couldn't repeat the feat in the decider and GT made sure, winning his first Over 55s title. Moppy Scott and Steve Burns retained their Lower Division Doubles title in a hard fought match which went to 3 legs. They won the decider by just over 1k
It was great to see the Ladies Final back, Michelle Baden taking on Jean Brackenridge, it was a nervy affair with both players unable to settle on a pretty good table. Jean knocked the black peg over in leg 1 which did not help her cause, this gave Michelle an opportunity which she took advantage of to secure the leg. In the second leg it seemed even more nervy, never much difference between the two on the scoreboard but Michelle playing very well in the latter stages of the leg to edge ahead and stay there giving her a 2-0 win
In the Mens Final, Phil Osborne (in his first Brighton final) took on the mighty Kevin Tunstall (looking for his 8th Brighton Mens title). It was played on, perhaps, the trickiest top, although still pretty good. Phil was off early, Kevin likewise, but crucially he was first to get them back and made enough. In the second leg, did not seem that Kevin was totally comfortable, but, as he always seems to do managed to stay on even when getting into difficulties. Champion again for the 8th time
Ending with my list of thanks you - to Stuart Mepham who does so much work to get the tables off the van, set them up and then put them away again. Could not do it without you mate. Thanks also to Joe Oakley who helped Stuart with the heavy lifting despite not feeling great. Also helping to set up were Krystal Beck, Ian Lelliott, Jim Millward and Nigel Senior, thank you to all of them. Helping to dismantle the tables at the end of a long day/night were Tony Jenner, James Whittle, Alan Brackenridge and Ash Edwards, my thanks to all of them as it was very late and everyone wants to go home! Thank you to Alan Mepham who helped me and Stuart load the tables on the van the next morning
We were pretty lucky with scorers, thanks to those that stepped up especially to Bob Osborne who did 2 matches and, once again, the incredible Tony Jenner who did 3 matches and 1 leg from another! Appreciate your help as always Tony
Well done to all the winners and commiserations to those who were not successful in Brighton Competitions this year
