Following some amazing achievements at the recent Surrey Open (a 20k-19k final), Christan Cox's maiden 20k break and Nigel's 20k - both in the Plate (!) Semi-Final, not to mention Mark Trafford's and Matt Jones's earlier in the day, several of us were talking records and t shirts and who was eligible and who else might be next. The conversation then shifted to the apparent absence of a club for Surrey, with Joe Oakley cheekily suggesting a 5k one !!!
Well, I've just spent a whole day researching the subject and, imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, I now present for the delectation of anyone interested, Surrey's own 20k club. For convenience the list includes scores although 95% will have been single breaks anyway. Also, membership includes any 'home grown' players and also any 'outsider' who had played more than a couple of full seasons in Redhill round about the time of their achievement. Multiple entries are also shown.
[Edit - list amended and repeated further down - ct 20/11/24]

So, the finale. Sergeant Wilson had told his troops to go for any score they wanted on the night and so with the final break of the season could he himself snatch the high break and score of POY Dave Jones (18110) and in turn get his first competitive table playout? With the support of Ricky behind him, it didn't look good to start. An immediate greedy split saw the 100 whip and the white landed awkwardly behind the 50. Luck was on Michaels side as his shot with plenty of running side saw one balls disappear and a generous leave. With the balls back the 10 split once again presented itself and Michael took that safer option this time. About 2k in another 10 split appeared, but this time Michael misjudged it and it whipped, sitting in the right hand corner - 20-30 shot was no bother and the break was back. After taking about 2.5 mins to make 1.5k, Michael was looking to get back to a k a minute and the 8k mark ticked by at 7:57. On track. From there Michael settled into his rhythm and the excitement built. He got further and further ahead of time and the question soon became could he make 20k, not just would Dave's score be toppled. 18k at 16:45. Dave's high break and score had been caught, how far could Michael go? A first 20k in the Redhill league since master DC in October 2008? With the bar running long (18:45) Michael got there with time to spare and even managed to get to 21k ( 21120 break) in the time remaining. A first table playout, a first 20k and a very satisfied audience! 4-1 I'd been aiming to get on this list...

Well done Michael Your great faith in your own ability to do this is rewarded ! As Philip Madoc said to Pike in Dad's Army: "Your name vill also go on ze list !!!" The question now is, will you be rewarded with a Surrey 20k club Polo Shirt ? And by whom ? I am sure that, knowing the Redhill committee to be diligent on such matters, they will wish to take the responsibility for this on board (if not I will sponsor one for you myself). Might be a good idea to ask Sussex if we can use their supplier (with a slightly modified design). Suggested criteria for earning a Surrey 20k club shirt ...... 1. Must be achieved by a Redhill League player on Surrey soil; 2. Must be managed in a single break; 3. Must be in a 'first-class' match (Redhill League/Redhill Competition/SCBBA Interleague/Surrey Open) with date known and in front of witnesses. That would leave one other player (Dave Constable) in the queue as having met the above criteria, so I would recommend two are commissioned. Clive T

* refer A History of the Redhill League, Page 5 Tony Walsh has been added to the list for what he understands is the all-time record score made at the Flying Scud in the Redhill League, where he had two seasons playing for the Black Horse, Reigate. He believes Geoff Jukes would be able to corroborate this, as he was on the opposing team and cheered him along all the way.
