Lewes 3, Redhill B 4 @ Plough at Plumpton *Colin Southouse 4130, Anita Blackman 1410 (still sufficient magic left in the black wand after an intense pre-match practice session) 0-1 Peter Payne 1500, *Alex Hornby 5010 (solid game from Alex, splitting throughout) 1-1 Huw Lincoln 1730, *Joe Elleson 4690 (positive play from Jelly, one fierce 200 followed by a red-in-100 with the following shot raised some oohs and aahs) 2-1 *Chase Newman 4520, Clive T 1910 (had some chances early on but got worse as the game went on as Chase got better) 2-2 So all games with the break so far.....could Redhill complete the job ? Trevor Rees 2050, *Mark Fraser 4530 (Fritz started off seemingly with less idea than me, but suddenly slotted into the groove and nailed it with a superb break midway through) 3-2 Dave Knight 2990, *Tom Pearse 6730 (Not looking good for us early on, but having borrowed Alex's towel to de-moisturise his cue, Tom suddenly switched on and played a game that lit up the evening, with the white Knight reduced to a mere spectator) 4-2 *Richard Todd 2350, Martin Greenway 1300 (not much incentive here for Martin and not a lot going for him) 4-3
Looking forward to when I can become of some use to the team, but a pleasant atmosphere, good captaincy, nice sarnies and a comfortable lift provided in Alex's new motor made it all worthwhile.

Worthing B 6 - 1 Littlehampton Worthing B | | | Littlehampton |
---|
James Whittle * | 6740 | 900 | John Dynes | Alan Mepham | 2670 | 4130 | Steve Beach * | Dave Ingram | 5800 | 0 | Chris Lawman * | Roger Taylor * | 3560 | 1850 | Eric Mole | Dave Jones | 4290 | 2980 | Colin Green * | Tony Jenner | 7320 | 730 | Mick Moore * | Rick Cunningham * | 9050 | 100 | Dave Hampton | 6 | 39430 | 10690 | 1 |
A good win for Worthing B, plenty of banter, some oohs and aahs with spun 100 splits but the Bs taking the chances presented to them James first one up both balls short, but despite a 200 and 100 shot John unable to get the balls back (top of table very unforgiving) and James had a 2k+ and 3k+ break to make sure. Steve opened with 3k+ and Alan gave it a good go getting the break back 3 times and was nearly level when he took a white peg and gave a grateful Steve the break back with about a minute to go Chris opened with 3k+ including a few excursions around the table. Dave balls back and with determination stayed on the table for a 5k+ break and touch with the bar due (in Dave`s own words I do not know how I stayed there). Chris still had time to take the black out going for a ball behind the 10 Roger lost his opening break but despite getting the break back Eric was unable to take advantage, then both players struggled scoring much and also being unable to keep scores. Roger did enough to put us in a strong position 3-1 up Colin opened with 2k+ but was unable to get the balls back again. Dave did a couple of times and made sure. Mick off early, TJ balls back but a poor shot at 1.3k meant he was off. Mick unlucky to peg close to 2k break and TJ balls back and no mistake this time touching on 5k+ to make sure Rick started well but off at 2k+, Dave could not get them back and Rick did and set about getting past the captains score and did so with 6k+ and touch turning to smile at TJ as he did so A good night with Littlehampton as usual and thank you to Stuart the landlord who had forgotten we were playing last night for rustling up a lovely Scampi and chips supper, which went down well.

Rather cheekily young Silent snaffled the scorecard before I could take a snap, but thankfully I'd been in contact with the sun-soaked Slee who was looking on with his bottle of rum from the sandy beaches of Lincoln - so I had some notes on what went down. Redhill A | 5 | v | 2 | Brighton A | Tony* | r1 | < | b1 | Bobble | Michael | r2 | < | b2 | *Phil | Colin | r3 | > | b3 | *Nigel | Geoff* | r4 | > | b4 | Tupps | DC | r5 | > | b5 | *Matt | Gary | r6 | > | b6 | *Kev | DJ* | r7 | > | b7 | Jim |
So after both sides had won their openers the first night at the mighty Merstham was to come. Having had a quick bash beforehand it felt like it was going to be a good night but, as ever, MVC can come back to bite you if you're not careful. First up Tony started well, looking in good order, before his one-up spat out on 4.7k. Honestly I'm still not sure how it did that but alas it gave Bob a chance and he replied with a well constructed 6.1k before coming off. With five and a half minutes left whoever got them back first would be in control, and that was Bob who made enough to take the opener for the away side. 0-1 Next up Phil looked comfortable but after looking good he left the red short on the break, ran out of position and was off on under 3k. Michael couldn't get the break back and Phil did, but he came off again with his lead only at 4k. Michael then managed to retrieve the break only to take a thick slice of apple pie out of the split and he was off. Phil finished off to put Brighton into a commanding lead. 0-2 Next up the mighty Nige took to the baise to try and make the lead almost unassailable, but as Gary had said to Michael "we have a good habit of making comebacks". This was the start, as the prophet Gary had predicted as Nige had learnt from Michael to be off with 500 before Colin made a faultless 8k and tap to take the break back. Captain fantastic! 1-2 Next up was the ever reliable Geoff, who got going at the second time of asking. A classicly calm break of 7.5k came along but, on the final split before the inevitable call of "good break" Geoff was in to minds as to whether to tap and left the white well short of the 100!! A delicate shot of the side cushion was in order and thankfully he played it well, keeping his break. There was just enough time if Tupps had his skates on, but we weren't at the Stag so quick play wasn't that easy and Geoff had the leg. 2-2 So all square after a storming start from the Brighton Boys but all they needed was to "hold throw" and the job would be done. Matt had been the star of the show the last time they'd visited with an excellent 10k, and it looked like that may happen again as he flew along, but came off surprisingly prematurely at 5.1k. DC had to use his considerable nouse to negotiate the fiendish rear of the table, but he got to the break and started accumulating. Despite a couple of slips, DC never let off and didn't give Matt another sniff. The best break of the night, 7k under serious pressure, put Redhill in front for the first time. 3-2 Kev then had the break to square the match up, but 24k wasn't on the cards this week. Not for the first time a thick split got a player off the table, but Gary was struggling even more. Having got the break back he just couldn't find the 100 split, stumbling to 3k before it was too much. Kev got the balls back but was off again, and this time Gary made sure and managed to get (just one) 100 split on his way to a total score of 7000. Game, set, match, Redhill. 4-2 So with the game over as a contest and DCs tunes long since gone, DJ went about making a truly mesmirising break of 5k, using every inch of the baise and attempting to even out the number of balls potted in each pocket. I think the Brighton chaps were a bit surprised he came off, they certainly felt the table was being more generous to us than them(!), but Jim settled in to chase. He looked as if he'd ease home, but he left a ball short of the 100, black peg and goodnight Vienna. 5-2 So a game where there were chances for both players in every leg, and from 2-0 down Redhill had to pull out all the stops to win, let alone make it 5-2. Thankfully for them the Merstham fortress was not knocked down and they will look forward to welcoming Brighton B next time out. Meanwhile Brighton host Worthing, ohh tasty, get me some popcorn!
