Old Oak 3, SPCC A 2 - yes not a misprint, humble 'B' league team pull off a surprise win against the mighty ones !*Martin 7720, Tracy 1170 *Paul 3550, Junior Dude 860 *Charlie 800, Laurie 7000 *Nick 1180, Sleezy 5350 Clive 6730, *Senior Dude 1400 South Park were without Vernon (migrated) DC (hols) and Junkie (manflu - get well soon m8) which gave the Dewdneys the chance to make their debuts. Did not go well for them tonight but once they get going they will be a force to be reckoned with - mark my words ! A cracking evening in sporting company - I noted that Laurie at one stage played a break shot deliberately too soft to give Charlie some table time. Second week running the home team has had four of the five breaks.

Due to several byes to start the season this week saw a top of the table clash (!!) between two undefeated sides at this early stage of the season. First up was captain John but he was off early, and Max looked like he was playing on a completely different table - he mopped up to the break and played beautifully, classic three breaks, one-up and hundred splits flying! The split was thin though, and the white would career towards the 100 which in the end proved costly. At 3.5k Max caught his split too thin and the white whipped taking out the peg. Disaster. But no matter, once Max got the break back he'd be fine... John took advantage of the back of the table play to build a healthy lead of 800, but Max was not going to lie down without a fight. In the eighteenth minute he got the balls back and caught John, nothing silly now. Then a ball popped out on the break, after a couple of pots the white went inside and beyond the 50. Potential 20-20 split, but Max caught it wrong, lipped the 100 (again!) and took out the peg (again!). So unlucky and clunk went the bar on Max's hopes. 1-0 So after the drama of leg one, Abbey was testing how many double G&Ts was the optimum for playing bar billiards. At the Garland she had been going well in the sweet spot of 1 to 2, but when you're on your fifth, forget it. In all honestly Abbey played ok, she was unlucky to lose her opener (another peg) and she match Mike throughout the game. But too many dropped scores would prove costly, although a quite ridiculous bash into the 200 to finish was rather spectacular! 2-0 So the Nomads were looking at a first defeat of the season, 2-0 down when it could have been the other way around. Steve therefore set about to finish the job for the JBs, and he successfully frustrated Michael who just couldn't get the balls back. Steve had eeked out a lead of 1000 after 13 minutes, but Michael finally got the hang of the left-hand roll to clear and make 3.5k, putting a very soft one-up behind when ready to touch. 2-1 Fourth on was Jim, yes Jim. While he manages to keep this excellent winning run going I shall relent from calling him by his proper name and use the pseudonym Jim. Taz, sadly, had little chance against the Nomads most-improved player although Jim did his best to make his captain want to rip his head off. Four times (out of about six) Jim's one-up left the red right on the edge of the 50, honestly he must have some anti-gravity device. Anyway a pair of 1.5k breaks and Jim's undefeated record at the JBs (apart from when he's lost - which he conveniently forgets) is in tact. 2-2 So the decider would be contested by Bob and James in what seemed to be a fairly evenly matched game. James made use of his opening break, adding just over a k and Bob just could not get going early on. James stretched his lead out to 2k but Bob quickly reduced that with a 1k break, but further inroads were hard to come by as James maintained his lead to the finish. 2-3 So a tough battle at the bricks, with the scoreline having the potential to be very different. The table played the best I've seen it, a consistent LH roll but break, one-up, split were all very gettable, which MAx in particular proved! Anyway, another Nomads win, another week at the top and they prepare to welcome defending champions Merstham VC B next!
