Horley CC | 2 | v | 3 | Nomads | Luke* | 1520 | - | 1910 | Jim | Nev* | 2690 | - | 970 | Michael | Chris | 1280 | - | 2330 | *Max | Alex | 7470 | - | 3520 | *Abbey | Roland* | 960 | - | 6690 | Dave |
Horley CC played hosts as the league leaders looked to remain at the top going into the Jersey weekend. First up Luke took on the remarkable reliable Jim, who'd lost just the one league game all season. Luke opened with about 500 and Jim got level quickly but was unable to build a lead. Jim looked the stronger of the two players and held a constant lead of about 500 before Luke made a good comeback to close to just 10 behind! At this point Jim put his foot down, the bar went almost immediately and he played it until there was one ball left to bank a 290 lead and seal an important opening leg. 0-1 So the Nomads took the lead but Horley are no rollover - especially on their home top - and Nev put in an excellent performance on second. He made the back look easy clearing the balls numerous times and often chipping away with 5/600 visits. Michael just couldn't get going, though, and despite getting the break back with just enough time late on, he was off with a thick break. So the super-Nev drew Horley back to level terms. 1-1 Third on the returning Taxi Maxi faced off against Chris. Max, thankfully, didn't take after his captain and was able to make some sense of the back of the table. He steadily accumulated a 1k lead and then late on got going on a break of 1.5k to seal the deal, added drama was in store though as a split whipped out and an awkward ball at the back was missed, leaving Chris in touching distance at just a k or so behind. Max, though, had done enough and put the Nomads just ahead again. 1-2 Third up came the game of the night, and the Nomads new mascots - Simba and Miss Piggy - roared and oinked the hero on against the fearsome Horley captain. Abs started off superbly, despite an interesting first one-up leaving the white up and red down, by racking up a break of 2.2k which Simba and Miss Piggy were delighted by. Alex, though, is beastly at home and got the balls back immediately only to thin the one-up and come off on 1.6k. Abs brilliantly got the break back first pop but this time the one-up was short and Alex showed no mercy, despite the cries from Simba and Miss Piggy to give Abs one last chance! A 5k break saw Alex over the line in what was easily the match of the evening. 2-2 The decider, then, saw Roland and Dave facing off and looking to secure the match for their respective teams. Roland broke down with a smile early on, leaving the one-up short, and it looked like Dave would take advantage first time by getting the break back. But he pushed his one up too long and a split thicker than a cows arse saw him leave the table. It didn't take long for him to get back to it though, Roland had taken a leaf out of Michaels book and Dave gladly got the break back to make 5k and touch "Jersey-style" - perfect prep for the weekend ahead. 2-3 So the league leaders didn't slip up on this potential banana skin, Horley CC have only played one home fixture so far this year and that was their superb win against the defending champs. A sixth win out of seven, top of the table at Jersey - a dream start for the Nomads and their wonderful mascots Simba and Miss Piggy!!

I have always enjoyed reading Michael's match reports here, always a very fair reflection of the games from his perspective with a great sense of humour thrown in along the way on certain incidents along the way. His report from last night certainly didn't disappoint! I do hold him fully responsible for both spilling my tea and choking on a mouthful of that when I read his comment about my (attempted) split shot.... At the time, I think I said something along the lines that both balls had missed by the equivalent distance of 2 junctions on the motorway.... but I much prefer his version of it!

Melissa is playing well and proof that you don't need big scores, just keeping what you score can be enough, which she did and Taz didn't. Table was tricky to get balls back as ussual, and break no gimmee, but all there once you work it out. We were happy to get 2 points from that game.
