Once again I shall pilfer Facebook:
"Wow, what a finale! A final for the ages as Steven Sheard runs it out for 19630, but Martin Cole was never flustered with a sublime reply, running it out for 20850.. the tournament high break. A superb display of billiards.
The Plate was not lacking either, Dave Jones tapping up on 17880 with the bar due was too much for Surrey teammate Gary Powell.
A superb day, thank you to the Salfords Club for hosting, everyone on the Admin desk for ensuring a smoothly run day and to all 71 players!"

Much to Silent's displeasure I don't often pen a word after an Open, but I think it'd be rude not too this time. Having spent more hours than I care to admit on getting the "Live Results" going and adjusting Dave's spreadsheet to fit 72 entries, I was glad that the day seemed to run smoothly. There are a couple of potential tweaks that could be made, there were three losers in the 10am games that had to wait a fair old time for their first Plate games, something to look at for next time. If there were any other thoughts from others on how the day ran it'd be great to know, I believe it was the first time we've run with 72 players so it was slightly unchartered waters.
Anyway, onto the day itself and there was a definite split between flying tables (2,4,6) and tricky tops (1,3,5) with the back room not being straightforward but very playable (7,8). Table 3 in particular was the Giant Killer: L64 - Liam Jones bt Gary Powell (Liam with a bad back still had enough for the not-yet-sober Gaz) L64 - Simon Coleman bt Mark Trafford (harsh of me to put Simon as a "shock", but then again you don't expect Traff to be gone so early) L32 - Dave Constable bt Kevin Tunstall (KT seemed to think it was worse than the mighty Merstham!!) L32 - Clive Thompson bt Matt Jones (A Surrey Open specialist [2009 semifinalist] takes out the World Champ!)
With all those shocks going on, you may have expected some of the giants in "Group 8" to have been felled on Table 3, but that was not so. Surrey teammates Dave Jones and Tony Cross both had early exits on Table 8, while Michael Wilson shocked Mark James - his 8k lead after the first proving to be enough. Nigel Senior got the better of Martin Smith despite professing his dislike of the back room, while Stu Carruthers saw of Vinnie Brown and Curt cruised past Stuart "Bad Back" Mepham.
In the L16 Curt seemed to be fairly comfortable against Stu, while Michael and Nige has a proper ding dong: After Michael had got the better of Nige on the tough table 3 the previous day, he was ready for the inevitable revenge. Nige put him in on the flying machine that was table 6 but a stupid split saw him off at 2.6k. Nige played 6/7 shots and was (rightly) in disbelief that the balls didn't come back so Michael took advantage. He got them back and went as quick as he could to run it out for 15,610. Setting Nige a target of 18.2k. Nige didn't look flustered, without breaking sweat he was at 7k in 6 mins and just had to keep cruising. But then nerves seemed to kick in, twice Nige thicked his split, but two excellent recoveries (including a Martin Cole-esque smack) and he was back on the break. All looked done for Michael when Nige unexpectedly left the split short, the white right on the edge of the 100, just peeping out to the left... Could Nige snick it? Well, yes. But he also took a rather large portion of the black peg on the way. Game, set and match Wilson.
So somehow Michael had made his way to the L16 and next up was the imperious England captain Curt Driver. On another lovely top (table 4), Michael was put in and he was going along nicely on 6k when the red whipped horrifically on the split. Michael's recovery was poor and Curt made no mistake, getting the balls back and racking up 10k before tap-tapping after the bar. So, a 4k lead. Well Michael knew that, but did the Driver?? Curt went off in leg 2 and unexpectedly broke down on 4.8k - only a k off the target he had set himself to tap at. But Curt's memory had lapsed, Michael had scored 6k in the opener and was now chasing 9k to win with only six minutes gone! Michael started his break well, steadily accumulating and holding his own. But then, 300 behind, twitch. Massive twitch on the split. A cows arse can't describe how thick Michael hit it. Curt, unaware that the match was in the balance, tried to get them back but to no avail, whereas Michael was living and breathing every last roll. Curt almost got the balls back but the last ball on the table took the peg out... less than a minute to go and Michael had the break!! Three breaks and one-up. He was ahead, just needed the split and he could breath. Clean as a whistle. The bar goes. Three break shots and a jump for joy as it dawns on the Kent-supremo what has just happened!!
After three giant killings, it had to end somewhere. Martin Cole had already dodged Table 3 in the last round and he got to grips with the equally tough table 1 better than Michael. He held a 1.7k lead after leg 1, and then opened with 3.5k in the second, leaving the red ball touching the peg after a fat-arse split. This was too much for Michael, who was trying various paces and sidespins on the break and even resorting to the odd-reverse break. But Coley would not be stopped. He was a man on fire.
So after Michael had escaped the group of death, there were still a few shocks in store. Joe Oakley was downed by the 2014 World Champ Dave Ingram, who used his best warrior qualities to grind Joe into the dust, while Redhill Bs unbeaten Tom Pearse took out Surreys wave-making starlet Max Burt - who was looking for back-to-back Open quarter-finals. Clive Thompson continued his fine run to take out the last Northants man standing in Damian Coates, and the 2022 champion Alan Donovan took out yesterdays unbeaten man, Matt Knight - perhaps if he'd averaged a few more he'd have made it a little further? The self-tipping maestro himself also progressed, Bob Hall seeing off the irresistable DC and lastly Steven Sheard saw off Phil Osborne, both players making 15k breaks in the process.
In the semis Steven ran out table 4 with 19k, a step too far for Bob this time, while Coley took advantage of the best table he had played on so far. Replying to Alan's 8k in the opening leg with 8k of his own before tap-tapping in the second leg with 11k on the board.
So with the main final set, the Plate final also promised to be a mouth watering affair - the Surrey pairing of Dave Jones and two-time plate winner Gary Powell. This final was an exciting prospect, Dave Jones opening the first leg as he tapped up with the bar due on 17880. A pretty faultless break and Gary had it all to do. He got to 4.5k but a couple of excursions too many and he was off, soon after shaking hands.
Meanwhile an epic final was taking place on table 6, Steven had the first go and his initial (10) split went wayward, but a superb two-shot recovery and a big breath settled the nerves. From there Steven was immaculate, a couple of 20 splits but otherwise he 100 split his way to an excellent 19,630 play out. So Martin knew what he had to do. His form has been superb in recent times and he needed one more break to pick up his third Open title. He was all on the split until a nasty whip on the 50 on about 13k saw the red sit behind the 50. A typically flamboyant shot got him back to the break and from there he kept his cool, taking it easy and cruising to 20,850 - despite the bar dropping a minute short. So superb back-to-back playouts in the final and Martin Cole got his hands on the Surrey Open Champions Shield.
Overall, a great day. Some excellent billiards on display and a good atmosphere throughout, thankfully admin duties meant I didn't have to watch Arsenal bottle it against the Villa!!

A few snippets of my own to add to Michael's comprehensive report (to keep Silent - an excellent wordsmith himself - onside with some extra reading matter ).First of all my own tribute to the Redhill League's organisation of the Surrey Open - way up there amongst the best on the bar billiards calendar. Michael Wilson the latest in a line of competent administrators including David Jones and Caroline - and long may he continue. And there was no shortage in manpower for dismantling the tables/loading them onto the truck at the end of the evening. It was a successful day for our home players (who numbered 27, excellent in itself). Seven made it to the last 16, and we had both Plate Finalists. Slightly tragic though that all 4 who reached the Quarters exited at that point ! The day started with some drama, with master v pupil Kevin Tunstall versus Ricky Dewdney on Table 2, K.T. settling the young dude a 19k target. Ricky was well on course to catch, on around 14k in as many minutes, when - similar to Nigel later when chasing on table 6 - he suddenly got out of position and left himself a difficult shot: he decided to gamble to keep going but overdid it with the extra pace and got the inevitable peg. Talking of Table 6, this was an absolute peach and I witnessed young Tom Pearse (in perhaps his first Open ?) making a good fist of it against Phil "Bonecrusher" McFarland. Then the even-younger Max Burt beating his Interleague captain with scores of 9k and 14k. Max must have caught the eye of Barry Holt, who offered some unsolicited advice on how to speed his game up, which involves some Heath Robinson contraption akin to a straitjacket to keep the cue strapped to his arm. At 1 o'clock it was the turn of Dawn Jordan to make Table 6 talk, replying to Bryan Stevens' first-leg 8k with a wonderful 9k break - eventually topping 10k and winning by a clear three thousand. This was to be followed an hour later by a cracking encounter (1 go each) between Jason Neal and Phil Osborne, Phil answering Jason's 14770 with 17070. It was fitting that this table was chosen for the Final which was such an exhibition. So very well done to 2024 Surrey Open Champ Martin Cole, and well done too to Steven Sheard whose 9-year old son Jake also took part in the competition. "Happy Times at Salfords"
