I have just heard the sad news that Peter Gibbs has died after a long illness
For may years he played in both the Horsham and Billingshurst leagues, and was in fact the secretary of the Billingshurst league between 1991 and 2011 when I took over the task
The Funeral will be held at 1.00pm at the Milton Cemetary, Velder Avenue, Portsmouth, PO4 8RS on Wednesday 13th March, followed by a wake at the Wheelwright's Arms Havant Post Code PO9 2SN
Rest in Peace Peter

Very sad news indeed about Peter.
A great champion in his time, won the Crawley Singles 3 times, the Horsham 4 times and the Billingshurst twice. Also successful in Doubles, with Sheila Wootton in the Crawley Mixed, Jack Warren in the Crawley Pairs and then Horsham Pairs with four different partners ! He also won the County Doubles with Tony Lighting.
As JT has said, he ran the Billingshurst League for 20 years - virtually single-handedly with the able assistance of a furry quadruped: yes, when a cup draw was needed he'd spread the tickets over the rug in front of his fireplace, place the cat in the middle, and then whichever one the cat's paw touched, that would be the choice !!!
Peter leaves us no doubt with his heart gladdened by his beloved Pompey sitting proudly at the top of the EFL League One ....

Sad news known Peter for a long time and have good memories of him, always willing to have a chat, a very formidable opponent. Unfortunately many of us are of an age we are losing old pals and adversaries but still always a shock and sad news. RIP Peter.

Sad to hear about Peter. As Clive had said he had a very successful time in Bar Billiards. He was very dedicated in the running of the Billingshurst League for many years.
RIP Peter.

Awfully sad news that Dick Cable broke to me Sunday morning. Peter had passed away. He had been very poorly for quite a time but it Still hits you all the same. Pete was an amazing player as his record and stats all show. Terrific concentration and one of the toughest players To beat. Lucky For me he was a teammate for a long time or I would have lost a load more games. Played together interleague and county as well. A lifelong pompey supporter and loved his real ale. He would go out and walk miles. I know his claim to fame back in the day was he was determined To get to every football league ground all 93. Then. An amazing stats man he gave up the game far too soon. A Happy release. Condolences to all family

NB. With the journey being too far for many of us, Peter’s former bar billiards colleagues are thinking of holding a separate get-together one evening in his memory. This will take place towards the end of March and further details will be advised in due course. - Dick Cable, Roffey SSC Dick has made a provisional booking of the Roffey S & SC Hall for Saturday 30th March, 7pm onwards. But before he firms it up he would like to know how many are likely to attend. So please could anyone interested add their names to this thread.
Evening is likely to be what one would expect of a Wake, nibbles provided and a display of photos and cuttings detailing Peter's bar billiards career. If response is minimal, we might simply meet up in the bar and play 31's or something ..... Cheers, tommo III LIKELY ATTENDEES Dick Cable Tommo and Margo Tony Jenner Stu Carruthers John Slee Mick Fairs John Miller Jim Balchin John Tidy and Dave Sands (might be late) Paul Jobbins

I will canvass a few on Weds night while over at Roffey CC. Then to be fair to Dick, hopefully get back to him before this weekend.

A quick reminder:
Peter Gibbs' 'Alternative Wake' details:
Roffey S & SC, this Saturday 30th March, 7pm
In the Main Hall to begin with.
Peter's career will be documented in the form of a scrap album on display.
Bar should clear eventually (footballers' party or something).
Once that gathering disperses, we should be able to transfer in.
Then play a mini competition on the bar billiards table, 31's or the like.
Everyone welcome. Come and raise a glass to Peter.
(As advised by Dick Cable)

Well, a reasonable gathering (2 dozen or so) honoured Peter's memory tonight. Loads of press cuttings to see, enabling some good reminiscences for those he has left behind. Many thanks to Dick for arranging the catering etc. RIP Peter ... his career summary is now on display in the bar.
