What a storm in a teacup ! First of all, there were no complaints that I know of from anyone there about the format on the day. Anyone who has a perceived sense of injustice has the prerogative to vote with their feet. A bit like me with SCBBA Home and Away format with the captains' nominations. After being stubborn for exactly 10 years I finally decided it didn't matter that much and started to play again this year. The tampering with Sudbury's rules for the Northants event hasn't exactly endeared me to that one either, so unfortunately they lost a player for both competitions the last couple of times that one was held. At my stage of life I'm past arguing: life's too short and I've come to realise that maybe there's more to life than bar billiards.

As one of the Norwich contingent who played in the event on Saturday (and a newbie to the forum!), I want to say that as a group we were made to feel incredibly welcome and we all had a great time. The organisation of the whole event was really impressive and we'd love to come back next year. It was really nice to feel a part of something bigger, especially as the Norwich league has been a bit separate from the wider scene in recent years.
We also appreciate the expansion from the original 64 entrant limit so that we could participate, even if it has caused some debate on the format!

Welcome to the Forum, Nathan. It was great to meet and chat with you and the other Norwich lads on Saturday, and as you say, hope this can be the start of something bigger. You are probably already aware that Norwich have your own Board on here, and if nothing else you can post your weekly match reports which others (myself included) will follow with interest. Regards, tommo

Thanks guys, would like to reiterate what a pleasure it was to meet you all.
I'm aware of the Norwich board and that it probably needs showing some love. We don't tend to do weekly reports but I'll certainly do my best to keep it updated with the goings-on, watch this space!

Especially if they were that bad that your refusing to enter The Northants Open.🙄

Not blaming Northants, the changes were suggested by others and ratified at an AEBBA AGM. I opposed it at the time and was not completely alone in thinking attempts to "3-Pin-ise" 4-Pin were unnecessary. It boils down to what I said, a matter of personal choice whether to continue to enter what hitherto had been a most enjoyable weekend.

Still wondering the rule change your thinking of, which would make you against our weekend? Also just a note. We have NEVER played Sudbury rules, we have always played either AEBBA or Northants Rules. So still confused.......

Hi Is this event included in the AEBBA ranking events? Before Dave's posts is even considered. Over to you Nigel for the answer Thanks Chris Hi Chrissie, Yes, both this competition and the Northants 4-pin are currently included in the overall AEBBA Rankings, along with the other county Opens and applicable AEBBA competitions. The ranking system as a whole is reviewed annually to ensure that points awarded are fair to every event and are voted on by all the members of the ranking committee. That review is under way at the moment and there are various suggestions being considered before any decisions are made. I'm sure that Nigel will provide an update of any changes once the review has been completed. 😀 David

Still wondering the rule change your thinking of, which would make you against our weekend? Also just a note. We have NEVER played Sudbury rules, we have always played either AEBBA or Northants Rules. So still confused....... Now you've got me confused ! Your competition started in 2016, and I took part in the first three. These HAD to be under Sudbury Rules, as the AEBBA set did not come about until the 2018 AEBBA AGM (in December) So that leaves 'Northants Rules'. Unless we were playing under Wellingborough Rules without realising it, you used the Sudbury set and I do not recall any differences. Maybe you are labouring under the misconception that Playing Rules are one and the same with guidelines adopted for running a competition: They aren't of course. Playing rules are static, a backdrop for the competition. And the organisers can then implement whatever system they like to control what happens, eg) knockout or groups? size of groups? who qualifies for the Plate ? etc. I would never go against that, as invariably much thought and effort would have been put into that by the organising committee. Just to add, the tweaks to 4-Pin Playing rules intended for 2018 onwards weren't the only factor for me not coming up since - although that tipped the scales for me in 2019: round about that time my car was starting to play up; 2020 was cancelled through Covid-19, and I can no longer justify the 240 round trip and overnight stay at the moment whilst my wife is waiting for an operation.

Thanks for that, Simon,
T.b.h. I wouldn't even know what the differences before and after are.
As I said in the thread in the link, I thought the attempts to "speed up" 4-Pin were against the spirit of the game and the last thing it needed was another variant of the rules. So it was the principle rather than specifics that I objected to.
Hopefully one day I will return !
Best wishes, tommo
