Week 1 Jenny A v Ashburnham

Result 3-3

Thought I would have a go at this in the summer this
year and played probably my first game in Hastings
for I guess about 5 years nice to visit the Jenny
Lind again good evening with the Jenny Guys and I
think a fair result in the end although it could have
gone either way.
Lovely music from the other bar with a very talented
singer who I am sure could grace any stage.

Ray 1500 Jimmy 950 Jimmy lost more than he scored
if he had kept all he lost it would have been close.
Ray with a 600 break where he mastered the break shot
a couple of times.

Andrew 730 Phil 1780
I was always ahead in this one Andrew struggled to
to score off the break despite getting balls back
on numerous occasions.

Paul BP Bob 1780
This game was very close until a couple of minutes
from end when Paul black pegged he wouldn't be the
last of the evening.

Andrew 2030 Matt 420
Again reasonably close till again this time Matt was
the black peg toppler.

Paul 810 Jimmy 650
Paul not as sharp as in his first game but done enough
as Jimmy again scored easily enough but lost more than he
kept.

Ray 920 Phil 1370
Luckily for me Ray could not score off the break as
effectively as his first game this time I was the toppler
losing 1800 points and a 830 break Ray could not take
advantage and I managed to get my nose back in front
and stay there.

Thanks all for a good evening and for all in Hastings
getting the league going it is great to see it hanging
in there with a determined bunch of players both old and
new.

Matt Jones 1070 v 1550 Steve Astley
Steve and Matt were both targeting the 200 hole for a fair part of the match so scores were a bit down

Phil Osborne 6670 v 1970 Colin Southouse
Phil on fine form with a quality 5250 opening break, 1 was guesting for the Jenny as they were 1 short, took me too long to be comfortable on the break to make inroads

Bob Osborne 4770 v 1149 Alex Reardon
Bob Always in the driving seat with breaks of 860,1180 & 880

Colin Southouse 8340 v 430 Matt Jones
Another opening break of 5270 from me to nip Phil's season high break followed up with a 2660 break very creditable on an away table

Alex Reardon 50 v 10,610 Phil Osborne
I Challenged Phil to better my opening break and when Alex missed Phil came to the party with a fantastic 10,420 break only the second i've seen. The previous was a Nigel Senior effort some 20 years ago in Eastbourne

I've now got a new target to beat, great to have a challenge and great to see Phil playing in Hastings again

A close match until near the end when Bob got a 1290 break
Always nice to play against Bob he's hard to beat in this format

Nigel's incredible milestone was made in the 2016 E.Anglian at Sudbury, where in a group match he had a 9500 break, and finished on 14,530.

I can remember Roy Wells getting his first 'home' table, (at a guess around 2009), finding the break impossible and then realising that the table was narrower than usual... that's my first memory of a narrow table

My memory of narrow tables stretches back further than that, Q: the Stepping Stones in Westhumble (foot of Box Hill) had two side by side - 50 years ago ?  And when Mick Wright and myself were investigating pubs to join the Redhill League (back in the 1990s) we found one in the Hedgehog (Burstow) and one in the Black Horse (Hookwood). Getting the break normally was absolutely impossible, as you say.

2013 saw the first foray for anyone in Sussex to play 4-Pin competitively, and the All-England tables were hired for all the Opens, so Nigel's amazing break was made on a standard width table where he was able to sneak both balls into the 50s, narrowly avoiding the mushrooms with very little margin for error. (What we know as the "Eastbourne Shot" - Colin and Phil also being masters of the same).

The World 4-Pin, held in Sudbury every March, now uses bespoke narrow tables, commissioned by Jeremy Fry and most of them manufactured by Alan Turner who based in Crewe. However, for those who still want to play competitive 4-pin on a normal table, there is always the Northants Open in late May, or the new Inter-counties in (west) Surrey in late November. As well as the Leagues (Hastings, Norwich, Newmarket).

Sounds as if you have fitted twenty years' playing into the last ten years.
Unfortunately for someone my age, time advances very quickly, so 2013 and the start of our 4-pin adventure only seems like yesterday.

Hastings Summer 4 Pin League Table
Well done the Ashburnham on winning the title and only losing 1 match all Season

The stag will be closing its doors for a while at the end of October the table will be going to the Cutter for the start of the new 3pin winter league
