With four weeks of league action out of the way, a trip to the Old Chestnut was in store for South Park CC B and Old Oak - who were meant to meet on the opening week of the season. The opening fixture was possibly the biggest of the night, the Oaks talisman having the break against resident daredevil Pete, and both players had to work out this unfamiliar top fast. Clive opened up with about 1k and Pete took a couple of goes to get them back, holding a slender lead with a 2k break. After a bit of a battle finding the pace of the table, Pete once again got the balls back and this time set about making an excellent 5k break to seal the leg. Well, when I say seal... the mood was jovial in the South Park camp, Pete 6k up, bar had dropped, banana skin out of the way. Last few knockings and Pete had managed to leave one down the middle in front of the 10. No bother the cushions are there for a reason. Pete? PETE! He'd chosen the direct route... to the right of the black, oh my god, CLUNK! Gasps in the background, Michael flung himself on an adjourning table, the black took an almighty blow! It may as well have been a rocking chair for what felt like an eternity but thankfully for the South Parkians it found its feet. "He who dares Rodney", yep, dare you did Del Boy! 1-0 After that unnecessary drama Denise managed to open up with just 200! No crisis was in sight though as she opened up the lead to 1k before a friendly game ensued, Denise taking her side to the brink of victory. 2-0 Charlie's characteristically flamboyant manner was on full display next, but it was Martin who stole the show really, settling in to a good rhythm early on to notch up 3k. After a few goes each another 2k from Martin topped his score up to seal the South Park side's passage into the quarter-finals. 3-0 So with two dead rubbers to go a rather fun game took place between Genette and opposing captain Martin G. Genette opened with just over 1k before the one-up slid behind, Martin getting into gear quickly to add over 2k and consequently taking the lead. The Pete-related black peg drama was not over though, with Martin leaving himself a very similar ball to Pete. "Don't go down the right hand side" remarked a suitably smug voice from the scorers chair. Martin took this advice, going to the left. He missed the peg on the way down.. and the object ball. On the way back? Well the object ball was once again missed but the 200 hundred hole was rimmed, taking out the black by stealth! Despite being the best part of 2k down Martin still looked like he could win, and he finished just 450 short of Genette in a fun game. 4-0 With all that excitement gone, Nick managed to pull off an even more amazing shot which bought the house down. Having gone down the back on the break, he managed to clip the red into the 10 while sending the cue ball round of two cushions and flush into the 200 hole! It flew in like it was never in doubt!! The cheers and whooping perhaps distracted Nick a little, who then left both balls short on the break, and Michael made no mistake in clearing and adding 5k and (a standard) tap. Nick got the balls back after a couple of goes to top his score up to 1k, but when Michael got the balls back there was just a couple of minutes to go and Pete couldn't take home all the plaudits: biggest black peg wobble, the chocolate and high score! Michael just about got there, overtaking him with a last ball 100 to claim the bragging rights. 5-0 So a fun evening was had with the Old Oak and the Chestnut was an excellent host. An excellent little pub and the table played pretty well - it has a couple of quirks but it's all there. These two sides will hopefully meet a week on Monday for their rearranged league fixture, where the Oak will no doubt look to get some semblance of revenge!
