Congratulations to Jean Brackenridge who won her 2nd All England Ladies title in Reading last night, I won't embarass her on here by saying when she won her first - she wasn;t impressed when I announced it when she picked her trophy up ;)
Jean came through her group which contained 6 time champ Jan Taylor who now represents Surrey. As there was a disappointing show of 6 ladies, the ladies were split into 2 groups of 3 and played each other twice. Jean beat Jan in their first clash, but Jan showed a lot of class winning their second battle. This meant aggreate scores were going to be decisive and Jan played Mary Daniels first hitting 14,850, setting Jean a stiff task of 17,150 for her final game. Jean made it only by 1,000, to go through, but it was very impressive bar billiards from both ladies.
The other group was very close as well, and nearly saw all three girls on 2 wins apiece. However Janet Burns stopped this happening by beating Jackie Peckham in her last game therefore edging out Oxon's Jenny Abbott by 3 match wins to 2.
The final was played on a very tough table which required lots of right hand side on the break, making the one up was very difficult. Jean only led by 80 going into the 2nd leg with her break to come, but she used all her experience to make a winning lead finally coming out on top by 7,070 to 4,020
A shame only 6 ladies made this event from the 9 counties. Especially with the Bucks entrant not letting me know of her withdrawal. It would be good t see a full compliment of 9 ladies next year. This takes nothing away from Jean's win with all the strong counties represented, and in addition she moves to within 4.8 points of Pauline Withey the top of the ladies rankings.
