Here is a more detailed account of the bar billiards on Sunday.

Despite Northants getting a bit lost, 9 teams made it to Reading to contest the All England Team Champs.

Favourites were the entries from the Nelson (Oxon) who won in 2005 as the Morris Motors, the Brewery Tap (Sussex) who were runners up last year, and the Caversham WMC (Berks) recent winners in 2001 & 2004. There were also dark horses the South Park Con Club (Surrey) who were runners up in 2005

The teams were split into a group of 4 and a group of 5. The Nelson avoided the Brewery Tap and Caversham going into Group 1.

The Nelson were comfortable in this group only dropping one leg. Johnny George's Camb team the White Swan started promisingly with a 4-1 win against the Bucks team but then crashed 4-1 to the Nelson. The British Queen from Hants lost their opener 5-0 to the Nelson but fought back well to take 2nd in their group with 4-1 and 3-2 wins in their last two matches.

A few more twists and turns in this group. the Brewery Tap started well with a 4-1 win over the Victoria Inn from Northants The South Park Con Club (Surrey) fresh from their limo journey had a good start with a 3-2 win over the White Hart from Kent.

The Brewery Tap then took on the Caversham WMC and went 2-1 down after wins by Paul Sainsbury and Keith Lewendon over Nigel Senior and Gareth Lloyd respectively. It would have been 3-0 but Richard Wooton chased down a 7k opener by Terry Vallis. However Dave Alder repayed the favour by chasing down a similar defecit to defeat Chris Reeves and tony Walsh made it 4-1 beating Marc Chipman.

The South Park Con Club went into pole position with a 5-0 over the Northants side, and Caversham almost unbelievably slipped up against Kent losing 3-2 opening the door to their two rivals

Caversham recovered well to beat South Park 4-1 in the next series and the Tap gave themsleves a chance with a 5-0 win against Kent. With one series to go the Tap and Caversham were tied on 10, South Park on 9.

Caversham were favourties now and beat the Northants side 4-1. A 3-2 win by South Park over the Brewery Tap was not good enough for either side and through went Caversham to the final.

The Final

Pauline won the toss and opted for breaks in games 1 and 3. Games 1 and 2 went according to plan with Kevin Godfrey and Tony Walsh both winning for their teams. However with Ray Sturgess beating Keith Lewendon, Keith Sheard slipped up with the break and lost to an in-form Dave Alder who made the score 2-2
The final game was between two England players Steven Sheard and Paul Saisbury. Steven missed early but Paul pegged his 4k reply, Steven made no mistake second time around and 6k was enough to seal the title for the Nelson ( and spared his dad's blushes).

Four players were unbeaten on the day, Kevin Godfrey, Ray Sturgess and Steven Sheard form the Nelson and also Venon Sparkes from South Park. Keith Sheard had the best break of 10,220 (the only one of 10k plus), The top average?, that went to a certain Nigel Senior who averaged 11,025 for his 4 games.

Well done the Nelson who must pick the trophy up from the Horse & Harrow and remember to return it next year :D

Nigel does a sterling job at organising these events from collating entries, to doing the draws, to making sure everybody is there on time and at the right table, to running things all day - often for 2 days at a time.

When you're finished and on you're way home - he's still not finished and has tables to help put away and once he's home he has websites to update and records to keep.

Mistakes happen. There is no need to publicly slay him for what amounts to a small error. He didn't get the wrong winner or anything or put the wrong team through to the final - you still came third out of a group of 4!!!!!! Ease up on him - it is probably just a typing error after a long, tiring and I'm sure exhausting weekend. 8-)

Johnny I can see now that I have the Bucks v Oxon scores copied in to the Cambs v Hants, I need the correct scores from Keith (or whoever kept your sheets) as they have their scoresheets.

I do have a lot of scores to input on the day and bear in mind I was also playing as well. I read out the group results at the time, yet noone to came up and queried it ::). If they did then maybe this could have been resolved at the time. It is very much a captain's responsibility to check their positions as the day goes on, there is no point telling me a day later when I haven't got their sheets!!!

Maybe if you could get the scores of Keith and post them on here I can get them corrected.

Johnny have you never made a mistake? then think again HOW you respond to others, especially when they put as much effort into it as Nigel does.

Put simply, if you don't help then don't criticize.

I haven't said once Nigel has done a bad job, I fully understand the amount of effort he does put in to running events like this!

I couldn't do what Nigel does, he is a huge asset for the game.

I was shocked by the difference in scores on the card, I have spoken to Keith and he will inform you of the true scores.

It is a bit of a shock having to come from Cambridge and play well then to have the scores not reflect this (not just me too)!

Well done on a fun day though Nigel, I did enjoy it and hopefully next year we will be back! ;)

I am glad you had fun on the day, and as i see you are in the draw for Jersey I am sure i will meet up with you then.

Please try and read both your comments with my eyes and understand the frustration I feel when I get critisized for what is a mistake, yes, but one that didn't affect the outcome of the tournament. I was obviously more involved with fixing tables for the final and checking the second group which was a lot tighter. And it also happened at the end of what is a very long day running the tournament.

Players do need to be vigilant (especially captains). If i do make a mistake then PLEASE come and tell me, do not tell me a day after, it is too late then, and frankly you only then have yourselves to blame. If you knew you had 7 points why didn't you tell me there and then or get your captain to do so? That is partly the purpose of me reading out positions of the groups at regular intervals is that any discrepancies are nipped in the bud as soon as possible.

I am proud that in my time as TD each tournament has reached a conclusion, fairly, and all champions have been 'crowned' correctly. This is because I have been careful to double check 'key' matches on the day and I tend to tie up loose ends later, such as averages, ranking points and substitutions etc. The Cambridge mistake was missed by me as it was a dead rubber and could only possibly be picked up by your team at the time, or as has happened in my post tournament post above.

We should all be working together to keep an accurate record of what happens at events, and if players read these reports should see anything they wish to query just let me know, but sarcastic replies do not help.

Once Keith gets the correct scores to me I will alter the initial post accordingly

Well done Nigel in you time as tournament director, I was not there for this particular weekend, but as you know have had my first full season of attending comps, I know how hard you work and the time and effort required.

These events will miss your enthusiasm and effort to keep everyone up to date as soon as possible after the event. Whoever takes over I am sure will do a good job, but they will realise how hard organising, playing at the same time, and putting up with the one or two whingers is.

Knowing you I also know you do not drive so also have to arrange to get there early by whatever means of transport is available. playing the same laocal leagues with you I know you are a man of integrity and a mistake made would be accidental and wuld upset you as much as anyone, it does not need stupid remarks or comments from those few idiots that are about, but as you state sarcasm is not the way to help somebody do the job.

I hope Johnny and Mark are MEN enough to approach you in Jersey and put what I am sure was only an off the cuff remark right. Carry on the great work for the rest of the season Tony.
