Has anybody got any dates for open Tournaments next year yet? ???
I'm hoping to enter quite a few of them, however as a part-time weekend dad :) I need to plan my free weekends well in advance to keep on the right side of my (not very understanding! :() ex-wife...!!
I know that Oxford is on 16th February, but if any other dates have been confirmed yet then it would help me a lot. ;)

Dave I
Just to give you a rough guide for the Open dates, here is a rough idea of when they are. Mermaid Portsmouth April, usually near the end of Sussex Worhting June, usually 1st week-end Kent Tonbridge July, around about 2nd week-end Berkshire usually September Bucks usually August Both the Bucks Open and the Berks Open sometimes swap months, but it gives you an idea of when the competitions are coming up, but as Nigel said in his post, confirmation will come at the AEBBA AGM, which is Sunday next 9th Dec.

The 64 limit means that Guernsey are going to have to be VERY efficient with acknowedging entries.
Flights cannot be booked until players know they have been accepted.
It's not a good weekend for Northants and Kent, both of whom have conflicts.

Presumably being an Open this will qualify for National Ranking points ( - Nigel ? )

Presumably being an Open this will qualify for National Ranking points ( - Nigel ? ) We would have to agree between the five of us (me, you, Mal, Mark & Dave) but I would think so as it is an open. It should also qualify for the Grand Prix series as well. Good news that this tournament is going ahead and I look forward to it.

Hi Nige,
My view is that it cannot be a ranked tournament as it is restricted, not open entry.
If ANYONE applies before the closing date and is refused entry, that tournament cannot fairly award ranking points.

If ANYONE applies before the closing date and is refused entry, that tournament cannot fairly award ranking points. Sav. I can see your point Sav, however all opens have there upper limit of players (the Sussex is 96 I think and usually oversubscribes). And the Berkshire was first 64 a couple of years ago and still counted as a ranking event I think if many people end up being turned away then we would have to consider if it can be fairly considered a ranking event or even a Grand Prix event. Going to Guernsey is a bit further than other opens so we have to wait and see how many people are prepared to make the trip and if Guernsey are oversubscribed will they open it out to more players by starting earlier (I believe the entry limit may be due to there only being 4 or 5 tables on the island) I will disscuss this with the others who are on the rankings sub commitee and see what they think.

My view is that it should count, but for no more points than an ordinary Open it is all in one day. (Unlike the World Championship, which is spread over a whole weekend)
We should celebrate the fact of a brand new competition and give Guernsey every encouragement with their efforts to get it off the ground. Great initiative lads, well done !

Fair comment Tommo and Nige.
However this year's competition has been announced long after Kent and Northants (I Presume) have arranged major competitions for that weekend.
I still question whether this year should count towards ranking points.

Hi Nige, My view is that it cannot be a ranked tournament as it is restricted, not open entry. If ANYONE applies before the closing date and is refused entry, that tournament cannot fairly award ranking points. Sav. I see your point Sav, but there are numerous sports where Open events have to be limited in numbers, in order to deal with constraints of time/space/facilities and health & safety. In equestrian events, for instance, there is a limit to the number of horses that can safely be on a cross country course at one time, a limit to the number of horses that can get around a showjumping course in a day, a limit to the number of horses that can start in a race. Other sports that quickly spring to mind are golf and swimming. The only way around these sort of constraints is to hold qualifying competitions, this is only usually done if a competition becomes heavily oversubscribed. One could also argue that if the Northants and Kent events qualify for ranking points (and I don't know if they do) that these events will be "watered down" by players being in Guernsey. IMHO an Open is still an Open even if it has to be "first come, first served" as long as there is a reasonable number of places available. In other sports it is common for people to earmark certain events as those they are more likely to gain ranking points and/or qualify for Grands Prix etc because of a clash of date with another event. We have been in the unusual position (because of the decline of our game) that clashes of dates have been rare - let's hope that a revival of Bar Billiards makes such date clashes more commonplace! :)

Sorry Sav but i agree with the majority, it should count this year. There`s every chance a Guernseyman could win and i think they would feel rather peeved if they didn`t have any ranking points to show for it ???
I have some more details on the Hotel.
The price at the moment is £40 per person per night. If you book at this price and Bob can negotiate a better deal, then you will only pay at the new price. There are over 90 rooms, so no need to panic about getting one.
I know some of you will say it`s alot dearer than Jersey, but don`t forget that is out of season and they wont fill those hotels at a bigger price.
It will be interesting to see the response from Jersey and how many players are going to enter.

I think it`s their own Finals etc Dave Speaking for Kent, Saturday is our 'A' and Ladies Interleague Sunday is our county alt rules, pairs, old gits & u22's Monday is our 'B' Interleague. Our major internal bar billiards festival of the year, but not national ranking tournaments. These dates are the same every year, so how would you feel if the Sussex interleagues had been that weekend please? I for one would be off to Guernsey like a shot, but I will not let my county down. Sav.

15) In terms of Sussex Agoraphobia; Fear of going out to practice on away tables Hydrophobia; Fear of having home advantage watered down. Claustrophobia; Fear of having the away team crowding around you when you are practicing. Xenophobia ? Fear of away players practicing on your table in the first place! Sav. Come on Sav, don’t be xenophobic. The donkeys were feeling claustrophobic so they decided to break out into the Open. Anyone would think you were hydrophobic about a cross-channel journey….. ……or maybe you’re just a bit agoraphobic (= “fearful of the Open”) ;D ;D ;D ;D Sorry Sav, couldn't resist the opportunity for a pi$$take back. ;) Seriously, I do have every sympathy over the clash. Two years ago I had a double booking myself with Surrey and Sussex Inter-League and had to go with the prior arrangement. Not nice.

Thank you Sav & KT for your usual words of wisdom.....! :-)
It is a shame that the dates clash, especially as Milko's idea to go out and support the England team at the same time should make it a fantastic weekend.....!! :-)
Probably best if I don't mention practising though....... :-X :-X

Sav, Assuming your County weekend has been arranged for some time, what would you have done had you been selected for the England team in Guernsey ?

Sav, Assuming your County weekend has been arranged for some time, what would you have done had you been selected for the England team in Guernsey ? There was never any chance of a conflict there. As you know, I retired from competing in the opens at the start of last year. I would thus not have been selected. I had enough trouble keeping my England place without losing an England singles leg (main or reserve) in over three years and playing all around the country!! Apart from whch, as stated in my previous post, I would not have let my county down, I agreed to the table arrangements for the Kent festival long before this date was first mentioned in December and I would have stood by those arrangements, international or not. Sav.

It goods to see that there is interest in the Open.
I have placed a limit of 64 but as we will be using 8 tables with 2 practice tables in the venue we could handle a few more players.
Its a shame that the weekend clashes with other events but it was the only realistic time to hold both the international and open. I did check that the dates would be OK at the World's in November.
I hope it will qualify for ranking points as us Guerns being stuck on this little rock do not get much chance to enter competions to pick-up points.
Bob
