The LAdies Grand Prix was contested between the top 8 ladies, split ito two groups of 4, winners to progress to the final.
Many would have expected the top 2 ladies of the moment, and top 2 seeds, Pauline Withey (1) and Jean Brackenridge (2) to make it through to the final, they did, but they didn't have it all their own way.
Pauline was in Group Y, and started with wins over late reserve Chris Toner and Myra Hawkins. However she slipped up against Denise Wills and with Chris Toner winning her other 2 matches it left Pauline, Chris and Denise all tied on 2 wins. Aggregate scores coming into play - Pauline 34,230, Chris 24,650, Denise 22,060. So Paulien though despite the one loss although she probably had the aggregate scores in mind in her final game, knowing she was fairly safe.
Jean was in Group Z and took a similar path to Pauline winning over Sheena Wood and Hayley Tunstall, but a loss to Jenny Abbott in her final game left both Jean and Jenny on 2 wins. Jean knew she was safe though with a 27,720 aggregate against Jenny's 19,480, and probably like Pauline had this in mind when playing her final game and settled to do enough to go through.
Jean never got going in the final and a 2k first leg lead was not enough and Pauline was able to retain her title 10,190 to 6,270. Pauline also took the high break prize with 6,820.
Pauline and Jean have shared the 4 ladies titles this year - 2 apiece, Pauline with the Ladies GP and Special Ladies, Jean with the British Ladies and AE Ladies singles. They have both had a fantastic year so well done to them!
