May i just add a point for discussion!. Is it not unfair for a pub to change a table halfway through a season?, the Loci A have played their quota of games there already this season on the old unpredictable table, now all the teams going there get a lovely 'New Top' to play on do we get to play our games again??. Not that we will as we won both times we played there but it is just a thought!!.

An interesting discussion point for the next AGM methinks. Often the table is not used in the close season, so it is not until the league starts that it is discovered a new top is needed. However, it is not always possible to change the top when the team or pub want to. We had to wait until the company were next in the area before it could be changed.

Yes it probably is unfair, but would you rather have a good top or one that is below standard. ;D

It is the responsibility of the home team to provide a table of a standard acceptable to the home and away teams.
In our opinion the old top did not reach an acceptable standard.
The step of replacing the top was the only option as the baize showed a disproportianate amount of wear since the season started and a couple of damaged parts would not brush out.
Any kind of ruling on the replacement of tops during the season would be difficult as the table is in a vulnerable position in most venues and could easily be damaged requiring some type of remedial action.

It must also be noted that our table was given a new lease of life in December. However, as part of the Bar Billiard Co customer service, it would have been given a new top in January regardless. Most providers will replace after 4 years unless the table has been damaged inbetween. We almost got to the four years, but you must remember that it is a league table and has had more use than a non league table. It is also impossible to police people who have never played before when they can be heavy handed as they dont understand the art or pace involved.

it is quite feasible that the table can be altered for every match to suit the playing styles of the team, or to give a disadvantage to the visitors. The tricky subject of playing surfaces has been raised many times in committee meetings and AGMs in the past, and will continue to do so.

I can't see any need for discussion at an AGM about this subject. The playing surface and conditions in most sports are an advantage to the home side, take England's dismal performance in Sri Lanka as a point in case. Whether the table is new or ancient the home side will surely set it up to their best advantage. Sometimes it is best to have the table performing perfectly if you are confident in your own ability or to have it a bit quirky if you want to put off the opposition. I have known players to brush a table backwards to try to gain some advantage. And anyway, regardless of whether or not a table top is changed, it can change from week to week or even from game to game depending on the weather or the proximity of hot radiators such as is the case at the Woolie. At the end of the day the old cliche goes "It's the same for both players" no matter how good or bad it is.

If anybody is at a loose end tonight, I am having a bit of a party tonight at the Wooly. A belated Christmas party I suppose.

Would that be a pink LOIN cloth? Sounds good to me. Looking forward to playing you at the end of this month.
