Hi,
Following consultation with the Chairman, I am requested to call the AGM on Sunday 14th September. Janie Macoy has kindly offered to host this at 396 (not 369) Loose Road Maidstone, ME15 9TX, commencing at 2000hrs.
Please forward any proposals for rule changes to me by 7th September.
Siting the AGM in Maidstone means a long journey for my league, but we hope to see reps from Tunbridge Wells there.
This is a vital AGM for the future of the association. The Chairman is emigrating and thus resigning.
I have decided that, after being secretary for most of the last twenty years, the time has come to move on I do not wish to leave the association in the lurch, but I have done far more than my share to keep KBBA going. My own league is going to require more of my time with the running of at least six bar billiard tables. I have now retired and have decided it's time to think of myself whilst I still can. A very large proportion of my time is spent running various associations and I now wish the opportunity to do what I want, whilst still active enough to do it. Eye trouble and finances mean that I can no longer play bar billiards at the level I have enjoyed for many years, it's time to concentrate on my other passions in life, such as classic motor cycling.
I will help any incoming secretary with schedules, website etc. for the first year.
All leagues have AGM's before the KBBA AGM. It is vital the future of KBBA is discussed at those meetings. Delegates can then come to the KBBA AGM in a position to decide the future.
To decide:
Who will step up to the plate and take over the offices? If no volunteers can be found then what is the point of continuing? Does there need to be a formal association now?
Interleagues:
The association has been subsidised by my tables for several years. The cessation of table rental meant that the Dover and Deal trailer, used to transport my tables, had to be sold, I would have had to buy it but was reluctant to spend more money. I also have lost money on the tables for the last two years. Putting up my rental would have meant we might as well hire the standard competition tables and free my house from eight bar billiard tables. It’s not easy maintaining/loading/unloading the competition tables on your own! Thus I have very reluctantly withdrawn for table hire
Hire of tables will be £54 per table and any league wishing to tender for inter leagues must budget this plus the cost of a hall. Any league outside D&D must also remember that six of the twelve teams have come from D&D for several years. Without pre-empting my own league’s AGM I would guess we will only be able to field one team per competition for any ‘Away’ venue. Even if the event is held in Deal, we could struggle to get six teams out. Three teams per competition raises questions over it’s viability.
The interleague weekend lost money this year for the first time, largely caused by poor attendance at the KO day. I would sadly question the future of this event.
The event will have to fit in with other hires around the country and the May Bank Holiday weekend is already booked.
County Selection:
Getting players to play remains a problem, particularly in the Open. It has been much easier since the current ‘Ryder Cup’ selection policy has been in operation. The policy is first five (open) or three (ladies) from the rankings plus two wildcards that have to be voted upon. If no wildcard nominations (players not highly ranked) then the rankings are used. In practice this is the first year that wildcard selection is likely to happen, for some time, with Curt Driver from Medway. If KBBA wish to continue to be represented in the Intercounties, it may be easiest, just to go by the rankings (if maintained after my resignation). This is an opinion not a rule!!
Incoming Secretary:
I have never charged Kent a penny in expenses, apart from a nominal charge for printing at interleagues. Any incoming secretary must bear this in mind. Money is VERY tight.
Almost everything is done by email and the website, removing the cost of phone calls and letters.
Could leagues please give me an indication of the number of delegates attending, so that I can warn Janie.
I will have more to say at the AGM, but wish to thank the many friends and supporters for their help over the years.
Best wishes,
Chris Saville.
