A new thread to post ideas on how this could be played this season.
I have some thoughts, which I will post later - when I have done some work!! ::)

I stand by my original thoughts which were: Two divs of eight is a really round figure, and surely we can run some sort of Charity knockout on a reduced scale just to keep it going. 8 v 8, 4 v 4, 2 v 2 and 1 v 1 only needs three separate nights from the league programme. Simplest way to a) keep it perpetuated with b) the minimum of fuss. Keep all the handicapping bands so that it favours the so-called 'lesser teams'.

A One Day Team Knock Out Event. You WILL NOT fit it in to the season any other way!

A One Day Team Knock Out Event. You WILL NOT fit it in to the season any other way! I doubt if you would get enough teams from Mid-Sussex to support it as a "Team Event"....... my thoughts would probably be either a Doubles / Triples Event either as a "one day" or possibly even run alongside the normal League Singles / Doubles Competitions, but either with Handicaps or maybe off-the-spot format to make it different.

If you run it as a team event with three singles and two doubles as in recent seasons, you only need four players per team. I think we could probably get about a dozen teams.

So we appear to be resigned to the idea that, if the Charity League or Cup is to continue, it has to be out of season.
It has to be singles and doubles as before, and the ordinary Team Cup and Plate shouldn't be messed with, as a) there would be too many games to fit into a one-day event and b) it would deny a lot of landlords normal in-season revenue: important to consider that.
So we are left with: who would play ? I think TIR is right in that we might get a dozen teams, but I reckon that is the upper limit. More like eight would be a realistic target. That would fit either requirement of (i) a one day, or (ii) three special nights out of season. And Boball would get his wish of raising oodles of dosh for charidee. ;D
How about stipulating teams comprise Four players: Two Doubles and Four Singles to be played, to make an interesting 6- frame match each time ? At least that way everyone is guaranteed to play two games in the course of the evening, without one player having to be discriminated against (as at present). 8-)

I think that for this season, we have to accept that a Charity Cup event would have to take place outside the normal evening for playing as most people seem to think that the season is too long.
I would agree with Tommo that we would be unlikely to get more than 8 teams to support a "one day" event...... if we were to make it a 4 (or 5) a-side event.
However, we may get more teams represented (and therefore raise more money! ;)) if we were to make the "teams" 2 a-side and play the matches as 2 games of singles and 1 game of doubles?
There would be nothing stopping a team from putting in more than 1 entry if they have enough enthusiastic players, it could be played in the same handicapped format as the Charity Cup has been played in the past and, in addition to an entry fee we could have peg "fees" to raise more money.
Depending on how many entries we get, matches could either be played in groups or on a straight knock-out basis with a Plate for early losers to keep them involved for longer.

I have an idea for the 'alternative event' for which Dave called for suggestions on the league format for Season 2008/09 thread. This has become obvious (but wouldn't have been had Roy not posted).
We already have an Open Doubles, how about a First Division only Open Pairs? The Final would fill the vacant slot on Finals Night and it could be named the Charity Pairs, and the Charity Cup could be awarded for it for this one year. I will leave others to work out what format they would want. (2 singles and a doubles ? All play all ? Handicaps ? Charity donations ?)
This is a variation of the Warrior's previous post, but in-season, and for the First Division only.

Following a special Committee Meeting called last night, I am pleased to advise that the Charity Cup will be played this season! ;D
Unfortunately, not all teams have decided to enter....... :'(
...... but a total of 10 or 11 have! ;D
The teams that have entered will be divided into 2 "pools" and will play each other once, on a different night of the week to usual League games, with each match to be played (by mutual agreement between the 2 teams) by a specified date.
At the end of the "pool" matches, there will be a semi-final between the top 2 teams in each group (ie Winner Pool 1 v Runner up Pool 2) and the winners of these games will contest the Final on Finals Night. ;D
Matches will be played under the usual Charity Cup Rules, with details of the draw and handicaps to be sent out to participating teams in the near future.

A compromise of sorts, as the keenest teams get all the extra games (guaranteed four) that they crave, and entry is not obligatory for those who already think the season is full to capacity with 30 league matches to play.
Would imagine that those who won't be taking part will be Plough; St Francis; USC and of course the Zeds (who would have been willing to play a maximum of 3 extra non-league nights only).
Still, I'm pleased that the Charity Cup has been saved in whatever guise, and we look forward to taking part in it next year under different circumstances. ;)
