Chris Tupper rolled back the years to win his 2nd Brighton Masters title, adding to the one he won back in 1997. Chris (Tupps), seeded 3, started slowly against a late entrant, Steve Burns from the Montreal, and benefitted greatly when Steve lost a 4k opening break. Tupps upped his game against Micky Pope in the quarter finals to reach the semis. A great comeback from 9k down overcame the Brighton singles runner up Chris Elliott. Awaiting was Mal Spier, seeded 5, who had just beaten reigning champ and number 1 seed Nigel Senior in a tight semi final. The table for the final was not high scoring and both players struggled to settle. Mal was 500 in front after leg 1 and Tupps had a black peg early in leg 2,but then Mal lost a crucial 1,700 break. Tupps eventually made a 2k break near the end which sealed him the title. Tupps now joins Nigel Senior and Terry Race as 2 time champions. Steve Mariner and Jim Millward are the other multiple winners with 3 titles apiece.
The tournament invited the top 16 from the Brighton rankings as usual and the draw was seeded. It has to be said there was a disappointing response from the Brighton players with players in the 30/40's in the rankings being invited to play due to drop outs and declined invites. Thanks to Steve Burns, Sheena Wood and Toni Hunt for taking their places after being invited on the day and also having the courage to play the top 3 seeded players. The only lower seeded player to make it through round 1 was Alan Messer (seeded 9) who beat Tony Jenner (seeded 8) in a fine match where Alan made a 13,240 break in overcoming a 7k defecit, which was also the days highest break.
There were a couple of surprises in the Quarter Finals, where Chris Elliott knocked out last years runner up and number 2 seed Chris Reeves, after beating Dave Reeves in round 1. Mal Spier beat 2007 champ and teammate Ian Lelliott. Nigel Senior and Chris Tupper both made it through their quarter finals as the only of the top 4 seeds to make the semis.
As a footnote, Chris Tupper is the only player to have played in all 16 Brighton Masters, his 4 match wins on Sunday puts him top of the all-time matches won list (with 25 wins from 39). As it was Tupps who "gave birth" to the Brighton Masters way back in 1993, there could not have been a more fitting winner.
Many thanks to Jean Brackenridge for the work she put in to help me run the tournament, and thanks to the Stadium for being excellent hosts as usual.
