CKRBL v Sportsman - match postponed. :(
Unfortunately Sportsman unable to raise a team with several players on holiday and somebody else unable to play at the moment due to a bad back...... I am writing this while lying on a desk to enable me to keep my back aligned. :o :'( :'(
Match to be re-arranged once Aunty Ros & Sir Trevor return from their holidays, many thanks to CKRBL to agreeing to re-schedule. ;D

Thanks for that Dave, I hope you get well in time for Jersey.
I'll let the fixtures secretary know as she'll be expecting a call on Wednesday from someone. If Ros could let her know when the match is re-arranged.

Greyhound 3 Handcross Z 2
A strange match with lots of decent breaks pegged.
Clive started with a 5710 breaK but black pegged a few shots later when an inocuous shot ringed the 20 hole and came back. He still won the game though. 0 - 1 Neil won the second with a last minute break to finish about 300 in front. 1-1 In the third Graham and I both pegged reasonable opening breaks, but Graham manaed to lose a couple more decent breaks later on while I kept mine . 2-1 Peter played very well after blowing his opening break with a miscue. 3 - 1 Geoff lookede like getting back from behind late on in the last game and hit the break four times. 3 - 2
A fair result in a close match with many more errors from both sides than usual.
Off on holiday tomorrow no more bar billiards until 27th I can concentrate on boating an beer testing.

Greyhound 3 Zeds 2 Weird match at the Greyhound tonight: two Zed players squandered a total of 13k between them !
Game 1. Paul Goodwin 420, tommo 1510 (opening break of 5710 banked, then later squandered with the Black. Lucky to scrape enough together at the end.)
Game 2. Neil 'dicky tummy' Burchell 3570, Barry Timson 3280 (Neil made a break of exactly 1k at the end to snatch the game, and was whisked off home very soon afterwards :o ....Get well soon, Neil.)
Game 3. Trevor Rees 5160, Graham Daniels 600 (another comedy of errors, with Graham spilling first 1.5k, then 2k, and finally, after Trevor had banked a winning score, a further 4k.)
Game 4. Peter Burchell 7580, MrMike007 ----. (Things just wouldn't run for Mick, the left hand peg seemed to have it in for him ! He felled the black towards the end out of frustration. But Peter was a worthy winner.)
Game 5. Geoff 'Ponytailed Guy Mk III' Fairs 1530, Alan Downs 5010. (Alan restored some sanity to the proceedings and managed to restore some respectability to the scoreline.)
So what do we make of the Greyhound table? Quite honestly, it's superb. The Zeds don't have any divine right to expect to come away with the match result against the League champions of the year-before-last. The best analogy I can come up with is that it is like a tiger tabby cat we used to have - it would allow you to stroke it for quite a while and then without warning it would suddenly bite you. ;D
Wouldn't bar billiards be boring if every game went how on paper it was expected to go ? Well played the Greyhound, and the coronation chicken sandwiches were very nice indeed. :P

Thanks for that Dave, I hope you get well in time for Jersey. I'll let the fixtures secretary know as she'll be expecting a call on Wednesday from someone. If Ros could let her know when the match is re-arranged. I spoke to Jan last night after I had spoken to our opponents. I will ask Ros to let her know as soon as the match has been re-arranged. ;D I was very disappointed to receive an e-mail from Roy & Jan tonight questioning the reason for the cancellation...... presumably with the intentioning of enforcing a 5-0 forfeit against our team. >:( >:( >:( However, since it was sent less than 2 hours before the match would have been due to start, it would have given us no chance to make any possible arrangements, which (if necessary) would have included me having to lay flat on the floor at CKRBL for the evening rather than concede the game. :o :o >:( The reasons for the postponement were discussed with CKRBL who were happy to arrange for the match to be played another night, the Fixture Secretary was notified on Monday and Roy also appeared to agree to it in his post above..... now suddenly it seems to have been made an "issue". ??? I sincerely hope that there is no action taken about this, especially in view of the postponement (by Hurst A against Sportsman) last season of a game when 3 of Hurst A Players were in Jersey...... which Sportsman willingly agreed to...... despite the fact that Hurst A would still have had 6 registered players available to play that night. :P :P Hopefully it will not be a case of "one rule for one team, another rule for the rest......"!! :-X :-X

name the 6 available players cos i can only think of 2 they may b registered but not available hense the postponement Okay Rob..... although I must stress that Sportsman were more than happy to re-arrange the game last year - just to enable Hurst A to field their "regular" team in the match. ;) With Kev, Peter & yourself all in Jersey..... the 6 remaining registered players for Hurst A would have been Roy Wells, David Ingram, Andy Hall, Steve Clark, Paul Marshall & Sam Newington, although none of the last 3 played any games last year as far as I am aware. However, the point I made was NOT an issue about Hurst A cancelling the game last year, that was simply an example that there have been precedents of games being cancelled that potentially should have been played under Rule 7a of the League Playing Conditions...... personally (and NOT speaking on behalf of the Sportsman) I do not understand why a match cannot be re-arranged (for any reason) if BOTH TEAMS AGREE to it and feel that intervention from the Fixture Secretary is NOT required in these cases, providing they have been notified about the change. Hopefully, common sense will prevail on this occasion...... however if we are made to forfeit the game then you will perhaps understand if we are less willing to re-arrange matches to "help" teams in the future. Ironically enough, I see that Sportsman have drawn Hurst A in the Cup during Jersey week...... I presume that Hurst A would intend to fulfill that match as they will have 4 registered players who are not going to Jersey this year...... ::) ???

Dave i agree with you entirely. I for one do not see a problem with the match being p-p as both teams have agreed. There are still many weeks in the playing season when it can be arranged for so not sure myself what the problem is.
Regarding Hurst A v Sportsman in this year comp i believe Bobhall will be asking Lady Ros if it could be played another night as we will be in Jersey. If there is a posibility that both teams are punished because of Us rearranging the Cup match as the normal players will be in Jersey then i am sure if i spoke to Bobhall he would conceed and award the match to the Sportsman, as that would be the only fair thing to do as it is US p-p the match.
I do hope NO further action is taken in your cancelled match. best of luck.

The email regarding the postponed match was sent to the captain of the Sportsman for reading on her return, with copies to the committee to keep them informed. The "issue" was not generated by the fixtures secretary but by others. This matter is not suitable for discussion here.

I am sure that you know Kev that we would NEVER want to win a game in that manner by default...... we ALL want to be able to PLAY our matches, whether we win or lose them on the night. 8-) In fact, I cannot think of ANY team in the League who would not be willing to re-arrange a match for another night to enable another team to raise a Full Team to play against them, which leads me to the conclusion that either the Rules are wrong..... or the person appointed to enforce them. >:( :P However, if the Fixture Secretary wishes to enforce Rule 7a) for one team, then I would have to recommend to the Committee that this Rule MUST BE ENFORCED for every other game that falls into this category for the remainder of this season..... we can then amend the Rule for next season to allow common sense to prevail in future. I sincerely hope that this situation does not happen..... especially as Colleen & I will both be in Jersey as well. ;D 8-)

The email regarding the postponed match was sent to the captain of the Sportsman for reading on her return, with copies to the committee to keep them informed. The "issue" was not generated by the fixtures secretary but by others. This matter is not suitable for discussion here. I received a copy of the e-mail as a member of the Committee and responded to it as the "acting captain" who was responsible for cancellation of the match, explaining in full as to why I felt that we were unable to fulfill the match. To the best of my knowledge Roy, the only people that were aware of the cancellation prior to my post on the Forum advising about it were our opponents, the fixture secretary and yourself. As such, I believe that it would only have been one of these people who would have raised it as an "issue". Certainly, I can think of nobody else who should have felt it necessary to raise the matter. Having spoken to our opponents twice about the situation, they seemed happy to agree to re-arrange the match...... had they not been then I feel that they should have raised the objection at the time, not left it for you to send an e-mail out less than 2 hours before the match would have been due to start, which I only read at 8.20pm on the day! As I stated in my e-mail response, we could have raised 4 players on the evening and, had I felt it would be a problem like this, I would have played as well...... even if I would have had to spend the entire evening laying on the floor of CKRBL Club and put my recovery back by some time. >:( >:( Since this matter could affect the results of this weeks matches, I certainly can think of no reason that it should not be discussed here to make all teams aware of the situation. After all, we have nothing to hide about the postponement.......

I know I'm not involved in this, and agree this is a matter for discussion at committee meetings, but I also believe this is exactly the sort of thing that SHOULD be discussed here. The idea of this forum is for all Bar Billiards players to be able to contribute and make their opinions known on all matters

This is potentially a dispute over League policy and is definitely Committee business: I for one would not wish to give a view nor become embroiled in an argument. I think it should be sorted out outside the Forum. You are no doubt familiar with the term Sub Judicae - that's what in fact this matter is.

Watermill A 3 - 2 Laughing Fish
Rodney Storr 2680 - 2920 Andy Brooks
Almost like Deja vu. Andy underhit his second break taking him off early, and allowing Rodney in for 1.5k. Most of the core of the game was spent at the back of the table scoring a few points, but a late surge from Andy with a solid table clearance, leading to a 1.5k break won him the game.
Norman Cragg 7400 vs 1150 Ray Carpenter
Norman opened with 1.7k, then another 1.7k, then 1k, then 2k. Ray didn't really get going at all! 7400 without a single split shot in sight! I was impressed!
Kim Stenning 5830 vs 1610 Les Whiteman
Les underhit his 3rd break, then after both players struggled for a while, Kim got the balls back and racked up 4k, which proved enough to seal the win.
John Staplehurst 1540 vs 3150 H
I want to cry. After getting the break back early on and racking up around 3k, I got a funny "kick" on a one up leaving the red hugely short so I had to play a "reverse" split, both balls bang on target with the slight problem that the one for the 100 hole whipped out and knocked over the peg!! But I didn't let it get to me....I managed to keep my head and get another couple of 1.5k breaks to win, just!
Chris Nikolaj 3040 vs 1620 Jim Ashford
Neither player really got to grips with the table here, Chris playing the slightly more superior game and winning.
A good night, nice new team for us to meet, very friendly and a good laugh. Hot dogs hit the spot and the beer was excellent. Table was good and flat, only tricky thing was the slow cloth and whippy pockets, as I discovered!

No need to apologise, H. ;D It's just that both parties seem to be lining up a case, and IMHO it would not be beneficial for others to take sides. I do hope it can be sorted out amicably but I don't think any 'outside' intervention (eg from me !) will help - especially as two Committee members have already requested that it be left to Committee !

First I have seen of all this.
Many thanks to vice president mama hall, for her post. It was spot on.
I have no problem with issues being debated on this forum, and have got involved myself, and have been criticized for it. However this issue is clearly 'Sub Judicae' and can't believe it is being discussed here. The committee is the only place for this.
Some will remember I was involved in a very bad falling out. I kept a dignified silence until the next committee meeting, stuck to the rules and the facts, and left the room so the committee could come to a conclusion. Suggest this is the way to go in this case.
BBW you should read your post 3/10/08 8.35

Oh when the saints etc. The sleeping giant has awoken and we have won one C Kirkham 1810 C Little 2660 Dour struggle, Chris makes it back to back wins
Dazza 4460 Bob Ellis 690 Easy one for this Dazza, should have scored a lot more. Was he just being polite? No I don't think so.
Ian G 1140 Foggers 1980 Foggers lost his way at the start of the season when he put 5k past Tir. He is back to doing what he does best, winning with less than 2k
S King 4260 Tso 3090 Strange game this. Both players giving the other plenty of chances to win. In the end my superior manners prevailed, and Steve finally accepted victory.
J Lear 2430 Mat Geal 4810 Good game from Mat, who has lost winning breaks in his last two games.
All games went with break, both skips lost, thanks to Marion for the food, the guest ale (strong arm) is rather nice. Thespecialone

Point taken Shaun...... and I will certainly bring the matter up at the next Committee meeting, which is the correct place to discuss Rule Changes.
The only thing that I really DO NOT UNDERSTAND....... and this is the final thing that I will say on this subject....... is WHY (if there was any question about the reasons for our request to postpone the game) didn't anybody RING me on either Tuesday or Wednesday (since the game was postponed on Monday) to discuss this....... instead of leaving it until less than 2 hours before the match was due to start and sending an e-mail about it, which normally I wouldn't have seen until the following day??
Had either the Fixture Secretary or our opponents contacted me to say they felt that we should fulfill the fixture, I would have played the match - even though we would have been short of players and I would have done further damage to my back by playing.
But no....... nothing until it was TOO LATE to attempt to organise anything. >:(
As Mr Reaper stated above, fixtures have often been re-arranged (for various reasons) in the past without being questioned about the reasons........ but if this is how the future will be then I would imagine that a lot of people won't be playing bar billiards in Mid-Sussex.
I will leave the rest of my thoughts on this subject until the next Committee meeting....... :-X :-X :-X :-X

Brewers Droops 3 Watermill B 2
Richard Jefferies 4410 v Sabina Williams 1780
Sabina started with a break of 470 Richard then got a nice break of 2080 followed by another of 850.Sabina was going well at 860 but then pegged it.Richard got a couple more breaks of 930 and 630 and although Sabina managed a couple of small breaks time ran out. 0-1 Fred Jones 500 v Tony Williams 1500
Fred started with a break of 250 and Tony was struggling to get a decent break and made a couple of 200+ breaks.Fred then had a break going of 520 and black pegged it and game over. 1-1
Lorraine Hall 5730 v Paul Blackburn 280
I completely missed the break and Lorraine took charge with breaks of 2400,1900 and 860.I wont mention my scores except to say must try harder. 2-1
Richard Shepherd 1980 v Gavin Boyd 1510 This was a rather scrappy game as neither player could put together a decent break.Richard started with a break of 450 and that was one of the highest scores. 3-1
Colin Humphrey 1310 v Martin Range 1870 Martin started with opening break of 960 then Colin got a break of 430.Martin then got some smaller breaks of 200+ and although Colin managed another break of 520 he ran out of time. 3-2 A good evening had by all good food a nice pint of Harveys and footie on the Tele what more could we want except a win.
