I must apologise to Gareth Buckle for the outrageous fortune I had when winning my game against him last night. I failed to pot a ball in 5 consecutive visits (and several more non-consecutively) and yet somehow contrived to be only 380 behind when the bar dropped. Gareth, however, was on a break of 400 at the time, and with just the red on the table positioned awkwardly behind the 30 hole, he had to tap up and the game was over. My luck was about to begin...
Being a table where the cushions slide a bit, he misjudged the shot and missed the red by a fraction, losing his break (lucky for me) but more importantly he left the red awkward. I played a couple of pots but then missed. Gareth then potted the red and just needed one more pot to put it beyond doubt, but again, luck conspired against him and gave me one final chance. 330 behind with just 4 balls left, two down the far end and two in the tray, I pulled off a double off the back cushion into the 100 hole, played a simple 20 + 30 two ball pot and so left myself the 200 shot to win. I've never stroked a more perfect 200 shot in my life.
I was pleased that I managed to pull off the 3 shots I needed to win the game, but wholly embarrassed by the poor game I'd played up until then and the massive chunk of luck I needed to even have a chance of winning. We bought each other a drink afterwards and I'm sure he'd agree it was an unbelievable game, even if he was unfortunate to be on the receiving end.
Again, sorry Gareth! I hope you have as much luck as I had for the rest of the season!
