Not since the demise of The Duck, The Snowdrop, Franklyns Village, St Francis B, and the Eagle, have we had a Haywards Heath local Derby. Now St Francis will be going to 'the other club'. On Wednesday five supremely fit athletes at the peak of their powers will make the short walk across the southern edge of the town. We are hungry and we are coming for you Sparky. You Had better be ready. Specialone

Thought I’d dedicate my 10,000th post to Haywards Heath’s Special Team St Francis.
I have performed some research, Shaun, and can now confirm the exact seasons in which your team last had the opportunities for a town derby. You will note that two extra venues are included in the list of 14:– Fox & Hounds and the Liverpool Arms.
So, here were the last seasons in the Mid Sussex League for:
Franklands Village Club B: 1981/82 Snowdrop A, Snowdrop B & Franklands Village Club A: 1982/83 Ugly Duckling A, Ugly Duckling D & Fox and Hounds: 1984/85 Ugly Duckling C: 1985/86 Golden Eagle B: 1986/87 St Francis B & Liverpool B: 1990/91 Liverpool A & Ugly Duckling B: 1994/95 Golden Eagle A: some time between 1996/97 and 2000
(the Golden Eagle were still there in 1997 when the Z’s transferred to the Billingshurst League as the Green Dragon, but had vanished by the time we returned.)
A mystery is that I remember a table being briefly in the Burrell Arms, and playing a cup match of some sort there, but nothing appears to have got off the ground in the form of a league team. The same applies to the Sussex Arms on the corner. But in all this time there has always been a St Francis A !
So, I hope you enjoy the long-awaited luxury of a short walk across the road to play USC, and trust that it turns out to be a good match.

Shaun you know I always look forward to seeing you and 'the boys' ;D ;D ;D Tommo the Golden Eagle last played in the 1998-99 season when they finished 3rd in the Premier division with Mick Joplin, Roy Gasson, Kevin Burgess, Terry Gasson, & Dennis Nunne as the regulars. Thanks Sparky, It's slightly off topic I know, but it's interesting looking back. The early eighties was a golden age for bar billiards (before the advent of Pool) and Mid Sussex had three healthy divisions. I note that in 1984/85 the Ugly Duck had four teams, A,B,C & D, and the Sydney West Sports Centre (Burgess Hill) - which isn't there now - had a team in the Top Division as a one-off. What is also interesting is that in 87/88 the league went from three divisions of 9 to two divisions of 12. I was captain of the Victory 'B' at the time, and used a squad of six to play the 16 games in '86/87, but once it went up to 22 games I struggled for regular players and had a squad of thirteen. :o

Don't get me started on that Tommo. Come on Sparky. I am trying to inject a bit of passion into a match between two teams suffering from mid table mediocraty. I shall post something offensive every day until I get a reaction. Looking forward to meeting you and the rest of 'The Girls' on Wednesday. Specialone.

Looking forward to meeting you and the rest of 'The Girls' on Wednesday. Specialone. I'm happy that us Newbies 8-) are not propping up the league....well at least we're doing all right so far ;D whereas I get passionate every time I see you oh SpecialOne :-* and might have to order a 'girliefoster' just to keep you and Chris on edge ;D ;D Pity I didn't play back in the 'golden days' Tommo as those sort of memories can be good, and unlike 'H' I was easily old enough ;D whereas the SpecialOne has been around forever, or so it seems ;D Yup, before said 'glory days' SpecialOne and tommo were old adversaries in the Crawley League: SpecialOne played for the Rocket, a haven for alkies and junkies ;D ;D and tommo, turner and timson played for the Brewery Shades, aka 'Saturday Night's The Night For Fighting' ;D ;D ;D I had forgotten that Sparky is a lot younger than he looks. When he was much younger he went to stay at Michel Jackson's ranch. He had a bad experience. Michel took one look at him and made him sleep in the spare room. Specialone

Your description of the Rocket is pretty fair. However it was also the spiritual home of The Cure, I see Sir KT is a big fan. I was actually there for their first ever live performance. They were known as Easy Cure then. A friend of mine, Peter O'Toole sang vocals. and Paul Thompson played lead guitar. Paul came back to the band years later as Pawl Thompson, what an arse. Some years later they came back and did a private gig at 3 bridges, for their old mates from The Rocket. Great night until the 'boys in blue' arrived, and thought it would be a good idea to arrest me. Got a bit messy after that. The Shades was much as you remember it. Was banned from there once, and thought I would miss next game there. However the landlord was claimed by the reaper, and my ban forgotten. Specialone

Apologies for going so far off tack but much of what the Special One says is of great interest, although I have to remind him of one thing when trying to wind up Sparky: Re: the Rocket and the Cure, small world as I used to live in Springfield Road, yards away from the Rocket, and Margo (who I hadn't met then) worked with Dot and Tom who are Paul's mum and dad. Paul/Pawl is a guitarist of genuine calibre who has worked with Jimmy Page. Re: the Shades, I witnessed a couple of "table and chair fights" on Saturday nights, also a few interesting incidents there over the bar billiards (Harry Leeson losing his rag; John Turner calling someone a c**t when they walked in front of him while he was getting ready to play a shot; and Mahsood reacting to someone reaching over his shoulder for the chalk for the umpteenth time by picking it up and hurling it across the room). ;D

See you and the rest of the 'sausage jockeys' on Wednesday. Specialone p.s. Have warned my team they will not be let in if they do not look as if they are over 85, and can not prove they are totally incontinent. p.s. Have warned my team they will not be let in if they do not look as if they are over 85, and can not prove they are totally incontinent. No problem there then :-* ;D I never said I'd be friendly when playing, only the rest of the time 8-)

Going back a long way I remember playing Interleague at both the Royal George and the Top House in Burgess Hill for Brighton against Mid Sussex in 1968 I think!

Involvement of Cuckfield teams in the Mid Sussex League.
Go back 30 years and the league Champions were the Rose and Crown, Cuckfield, featuring amongst others in the side, Tony Franks.
Another very good Cuckfield team from the early 1980's were Tim Peacock's White Harte A.
The Kings Head and the Wheatsheaf had bar billiards there for a few years, but after 1984 the sole pub representing the village for the next ten years were the Ship.
Last seasons for the Cuckfield teams:
Rose and Crown - 1979/80 White Hart B - 1982/83 White Hart A - 1982/83 Wheatsheaf - 1982/83 Kings Head B - 1983/84 Kings Head A - 1983/84 Ship B - 1990/91 Ship A - 1992/93

Involvement of Burgess Hill teams in the Mid Sussex League.
Counting Wivelsfield in with Burgess Hill, the Royal Oak forms a pair of bookends to this summary: Both as the most recent addition to the league as a venue, and as the home of the Champions in tommo's first Mid Sussex season - 1981/82. (Team: Reg Beard, Nigel Tolhurst, Mark and Dave Spicer, Terry Smith).
Town teams also lifting the coveted Premiership title have been Kings Head D (82/83) and Potters A (85/86). Brewers B were runners-up in 91/92 and Brewers A in 92/93.
Currently there are two teams each from the Watermill and the Brewers. The Watermill are comparative newcomers, having joined the league in 2006, whereas the Brewers have been a permanent fixture since the 1985/86 season.
The last seasons for 'lost' Burgess Hill teams:
Royal Oak - 1981/82 Weald Inn - 1982/83 Kings Head C - 1982/83 Kings Head D - 1982/83 Sydney West Sports - 1984/85 Potters B - 1985/86 Potters A - 1987/88 Kings Head B - 1993/94 Kings Head A - 1994/95 Wivelsfield Club - 1995/96 Cricketers B - 2001/02 Cricketers A - 2001/02 Windmill B - 2004/05 Windmill A - 2007/08

Involvement of Lindfield teams in the Mid Sussex League.
As is the case with Cuckfield, Lindfield has a lot of pubs for a smallish village, and most of them have staged bar billiards at one time or other - but sadly not any more.
The Standup and the Bent Arms both had mid-table teams in the 1970's, tommo recalls, and the Bent Arms had a brief renaissance at the turn of the century when the Duncan family last played. The Standup (renamed the Linden Tree for a while) play these days in the Lewes League only.
Most successful Lindfield team was the Red Lion A who were Premier Runners-up in the season 1987/88.
These were the last seasons for the various Lindfield teams:
Standup Inn - c. 1979 Lindfield Club B - 1986/87 Red Lion B - 1990/91 Red Lion A - 1990/91 (transferred to White Horse) White Horse B - 1993/94 White Horse A - 1994/95 (transferred to Golden Eagle) Lindfield Club A - 1995/96 Bent Arms - 2000/01
