I drove past The Sportsman today, there was a notice up on both doors which simply said "The Sportsman is now closed" with a contact phone number.
For those of you who were wondering why we made our sudden move to the Eight Bells, this should now make things clear.
We had a wonderful time at The Sportsman, I wish Mike and his mother Doreen all the best, whatever they are doing now.
It's always worth remembering that the 'perfect venue' often only exists because there is no competition for the space. Our team has learnt this the hard way many times over our history.
So if, at times, you find our new venue a little crowded - please be happy for us that it may help to secure our long term future there.

news. The Sportsman was one of the few venues offering a wide range of draught bitters, which allowed my team to do some 'circuit training' a very important part of our regime. Very good point, very well made by Ros. Last Wednesday St Francis hosted a big darts competition, and there was international football on the box. Made things a bit cramped, however at the end of the evening the committee member in charge of the bar was over the moon. Next time you find yourself in a venue which is noisy or crowded because of a champions league or international match, it is worth remembering that at the end of the evening, that nights takings is paying next months rent, or paying for the latest improvements demanded by Health and Safety, or the fire prevention officer. Yes, news indeed. :'( The Sportsman was a wonderful venue for us and, speaking for myself, I was very disappointed that we had to move. :-X The management and staff always gave us a very friendly welcome, a good range of drinks and excellent food always guaranteed a very enjoyable visit there. ;D Sadly, during the troubled financial times that we all find ourselves in, the location of the pub went very much against it as, unlike many pubs in the country, it had no village and locals to really support it and very few people passing for occasional trade...... you either knew it was there and went there because of that, or you didn't. :-/ So it very much relied on the few people that knew about it, including the Lewes & Mid-Sussex Bar Billiards teams that played there....... although the writing had been on the wall for a few months, the expression "final nail in the coffin" could probably be fairly used when our table was moved...... >:( :-X I wish Mike, Doreen, Matt and the remainder of the staff every success for the future...... and thank them for the many enjoyable times that we spent in their company. ;D

What a shame.
It was a really good venue for bar billiards. Somewhere which was worth going out of your way to play 'friendly' matches outside of the League's organisation, and we had a few of those, the hospitality always enjoyed very much by the Zeds. I think it was put forward as the ideal venue for the first M/S Masters.
Buffets will now have to be slayed elsewhere........ ;)
