I have received written confirmation about changes being made by Bar Billiards Ltd in a letter from Ken Hussey.
Richard Gipps and his sisters have sold their shares to Peter Slattery and will no longer supply finals tables after 4th Dec 2006.
The subsidy situation will continue for the 2006/2007 winter season but will be reviewed annually.
The 8 tables with scoreboards and trolley have been sold to Brian Daniels who has promised to fulfil existing commitments, but Ken suggests confirmations are made with him.
Ken concludes the letter by stating that the company now operates only 165 sites, compared to 2200 about 30 years ago.
My only comments on the final paragraph are:
This seems to me to be fairly misleading as so many sites have been sold off, so the steep decline quoted does not truly reflect the reduction in the number of tables in pubs and clubs, and I do wish Ken would stop spreading this sort of depressing news.
Yes, there are less tables, but surely the number of "owned" tables should be taken into consideration when calculating the decline.

So what would happen if Ken sold his shares?
Would there be no more Reading events?

So what would happen if Ken sold his shares? Would there be no more Reading events? Think you missed the point JG, the competition tables have been sold to Brian Daniels, who will continue to supply the major functions. The functions that will suffer are league finals nights where only a couple of tables are required and Ken used to incorporate those with a delivery / collection. I cannot see those being economical for Brian / Mary. Sav.

I think we ought to leave that for Brian and Mary to sort out.

I think we ought to leave that for Brian and Mary to sort out. Why?? ??? ??? Comment based on experience of the owner of the only other set of competition tables, Statement of fact Peter. No criticism is intended of Mary & Brian, indeed no one else apart from them & I have put their hands in their pockets to try and keep the competitions going by protecting competition tables. AEBBA certainly were not interested when I suggested setting up a cooperative over a year ago. I am not prepared to give up an afternoon/evening and drive across counties to deliver two or three bar billiard tables to a finals night that doesn't finish until closing time and getting home at two o'clock in the morning with a day's work to do the following day. Would you?? Time to wake up and smell the coffee!!! Chris Saville. Owner of one of the only two sets of competition tables.

Would add that Sussex not affected as their tables not Bar Billiards Ltd tops: Standard arrangement with Tarratts for tables for competitions remains.
But remainder of counties apart from Kent (Sav) and Hants (Brian and Mary) could be in the warm poo.
Surrey venues all looking to buy their own tables rather than rent when it comes to the crunch. The Limes are thinking of adding a second table. And would hopefully be able to come to some sort of arrangement for competitions with Brian and Mary or Sav being an adjacent county to both (though don't quote me ! :-X )

Correct Tommo, though I don't think Tarratt's future supply of competition tables is by any means guaranteed.
It will only be through people like Brian, Mary & myself that Bar Billiards is kept going in the long term on the big stage.
Most of the company rental tables in my league are pretty poorly maintained now. As you say, private ownership of league tables is the way ahead.

I know you have a sort of vested interest, and some discussions between you and them may need to take place, but I do not really think that it is fair to have the forum poking its nose in yet. BNTE

I think it better that I refrain from a further reply on poking my nose in

I think it better that I refrain from a further reply on poking my nose in I did say that it was this forum who should not be poking its nose in. But, as it is my BNTE day, have a go at my new Grand Prix quiz instead, the real Grand Prix that is......

??? May seem a bit of a naive question, but who do we contact now, to arrange for a new top to be fitted to our table. :-/ Your table rental company if the table is rented Dick. That part has not changed so far. Its just the competition tables that go to the opens etc that have been sold off.
