Just spent my afternoon in the rather hostile environment of facing an extremely rowdy Oxford United crowd roaring their table-toppers on to yet another victory.
The U's passed the ball well in the first half and deserved their goal which came five minutes into the second half. They had a very skilful left back in Damian Batt who coped well with any threats from the flank, but each side's centre-forward, top scorers in this League, were being marked out of the game, the U's Jimmy Constable by Dons centre-half Paul Lorraine, and the Dons' Danny Kedwell by a 'large unit' (big bruiser of a guy) called Mark Creighton. The latter however has a high-pitched voice, and his wimpish cries of "handball, ref" drew great amusement from the crowd.
After gaining the lead, Oxford for some reason decided to shut up shop and stop playing, apart from frantically defending against the Dons' relentless bombardment of their goal. But the equaliser just wouldn't come - Danny Kedwell even missing a penalty when the keeper fingertipped his fierce shot onto a post.
So far the Wombles have had to face Luton, Kettering, Altrincham and Oxford - all promotion candidates. It's about time we got an easy game - bring on Cambridge United in a fortnight's time. ;D
Tried to pick some bar billiards stars out of the crowd, by the way, but didn't spot any. ;) ;D

Clive
I was there yesterday in amongst the rowdy Oxford crowd ;D. I did have a look out for you but to no avail.
With both defences playing well to keep the top scorers out, the penalty save as well it was a good game. I think you will be pushing for a play off place.

Yup, I would have been just to your left at the front of the John Smiths stand, resting /leaning over the barrier. :D I hope you enjoyed your day, the weather was brilliant and they did a brilliant double cumberland sausage in French stick at the barbecue stall. :P
Re our sides' chances, I think the league will be won by either Oxford or Luton who seem to be a class above the rest, and as you say our best aspiration would be for a play-off place, lose it, and then go for the title next year ! 8-)
