It is the Alternative Rules this Sunday (1st Nov),
Post Office Club, Reading 11.30 registration for 12 start. All players welcome. For those that don't know the Alternative bit is the rules - a different sort of bar billiards - off the spot, and a triangle of balls every time you clear all the balls - no break shots!

Sav's 'Silly Billiards' ;D ;D Still popular down here, but we don't play off the spot, that was added by AEBBA. A test of Bar Billiards knowledge and skill as a whole, not just three shots. Sav

agree with it being anywhere in the D, but would change it to normal game rules when the table is cleared, so it's more of a race to get the break back 8-) racking up again in the middle of the game is tedious and time wasting.

Ian, we've tried a few alternatives to the rules including this one, but I think it was still played off the spot. The current way seems to be the way that most players like and I must say it is quite exciting at times with a lot of close finishes. It is also nice to play off the spot for a change and test out all the different angled shots from the cushions. I would love to win this as I've lost in three finals all of which were different variations. :(

Was contemplating coming to Reading tomorrow but the forecast is obnoxious. Sav

Congratulations to Phil Collins on winning the Alternative rules yesterday beating Steven Sheard in the final. This is the first time that he has entered this competition and only the third tournament this year that he has been in. Phil has reached the final of all three and won two of them, a great record by a great player, well done.
The last 8 were; Phil beat Sonya McIntyre (well played Sonya on reaching the Q/F) Mark Trafford beat Gerry Fitzjohn Mark Brewster beat Keith Sheard Steven beat Dave Alder
Last 4 Phil beat Mark T Steven beat Mark B
(Don't know about the Plate Comp)
There were over 50 players that entered this year, so making for a very late finish. I left after losing at 7.45pm and the Semis were only just about to start. :o
I think we should change the way we run this tournament by: 1. Enter before the day. 2. Make a fee of £5 or £10 to enter that is refundable on the day. No refund for a no show. 3. Start 11am or earlier. 4. Make draw before the day. 5. Make the Plate only 1 Leg.

Well done Phil, great win.
In the plate competition, Chris Toner beat Dave Barnes in the final. Not sure about the dodgy scorer in the final - who was on top ;) ;D ;) In the semi finals - Chris beat Ian Gordon and Dave beat Chris Newson by sinking the 200 to win by 30 !

What a great game Ian Gordon played !!! He was so calm and consistent and a true professional throughout the game, one to seriously look out for in the future, as his game just constantly moves forward.
Well done Phil...look forward to the Speedo's in Jersey ;) :) ;)
As for the dodgy scorer bless him ... I had to giggle :) :) :)
Dave Barnes was unlucky but a true sportsman throughout..
Great day yes, a little long but run smoothly and superbly by Dave, Sam, Phil and Nigel... Thank you all. :-*

Well done Phil for his win yesterday, and to Chris Toner for winning the plate.
51 players is a big improvment on last years attendance (of 35) and I agree it does make for a long day.
I have tried this entry before the day before, and it is very hard work chasing people for entries (and money if you enforce an entry fee). Even if you make them pay, I bet you a few still will not show up, It only takes a few not to show to throw the tournament into chaos, as you will get byes in the main and plate competitions. When I did the draw before in 2005 I published the start times to help people and I think around 15 people (out of around 50) did not show up, and some did who had not entered - it was a nightmare!
The plate could have started with one leg rounds, but yesterdays format had plate and main competitions on at the same time so as to fit them in, so making it one leg would have only save 20 minutes at best as the main competition matches would still have been going on. It can probably be looked at but I am not sure you could save much time there and you would have to rejig the whole format.
If the tournament ran to time yesterday it should have been done by about 8.30 but it was over running. I think the best solution is to start an hour earlier, that is if we are to get numbers of 50 or more. Or will extra tables be available in future? That would help - don't forget most opens have 10, why not have 10 for this one, there is the space? The positive is the number of players there yesterday (and of all abilities) and that shows this competition does have a place on th calendar, something which I had doubted over the last couple of years.

Nigel's reply is excellently put and so right..
In opens we have 10 tables We start at 10.30am latest
So why not have more tables if possible for this and an earlier start time..
and as he has said if the numbers have risen by almost 40% re entries from all levels lets look at promoting further by arranging times and if possible tables rather than putting in constraints..
