Let us hope that we do get some reports from Eastbourne here as it would be nice to hear more about the League they run..... so, if anybody has some contacts over there give them some encouragement to get involved! ;)

Hi Sparky Hold on to your hat 'cause i can write some real boring reports regs cs OK 'Col' I'm ready and snoring ;D ;D ;D Good to hear a little of your exploits in Sunny Eastbourne. I remember playing Interleague in a pub that we turned right off the A22 at a roundabout and think it might have been Rodmill Drive but cannot remember where from there, does that ring any bells?

Did you know, folks.....................................
The first Sussex Open was held at Eastbourne. The forerunner of the Bournemouth Pairs (where you put up in a hotel) was also first held at Eastbourne.

I remember that night as well, I came down to support the team, hoping for a friendly at the end (for which I was overlooked), it would have been 2002 ish and your memory is correct Sparks, I think the pub may have been the Red Lion goo.gl/maps/NZABIf not then it was a pub in the very near locality. Good days ;D Jan captaining the Mid Sussex team and good old Q might just as well been invisible ::)

Did you know, folks..................................... The first Sussex Open was held at Eastbourne. Have just found the programme for it. Was staged on Sun 5th June 1994 at the Kings Arms, Eastbourne. The following year it was switched to the Inland Revenue Club, Worthing. I notice the Sussex website only shows details for this century. I have programmes (and details of winners, etc) for 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000 (sadly not 1998) if anyone is interested. On to Sparky & Bernie's discussion on Eastbourne pubs. Yes I remember going to the Red Lion for an Interleague match too. It was Peter and Sheila O'Brien's pub (they since moved to Somerset).

Hi tommo
I remember the Kings Arms Open, Gary Sweeney and i went to a sussex bar billiards meeting just out of curiosity and the open was being discussed, when it came to sorting a venue out Gary shouted out "Eastbourne will do it" as no landlords or managers were at the meeting we got it on the nod, We then had to go to the Kings Arms and tell Dave what we had done, he was into pub sports so it worked out ok.
The day went well, in those days drinking was the main reason for playing bar billiards and there sure was plenty of that going on, it was the most profitable day in the pubs history and its all Garys fault!

Thanks Q and Tommo as I'm now sure you are right about it being the Red Lion with both the picture and the Peter & Sheila references as definite, nice to know that at least some of my memory still functions ;D expect the 'Scruffy Mithrandir' had that night off :P

Your memory is definitely not playing tricks, Sparky, as this link from the Mid Sussex website shows yours and Eastbourne's paths crossing at the turn of the century: www.mid-sussexbbl.co.uk/page31.htmlBut what of tommo's memory, as the records show that I only started playing for Mid Sussex B (under Bernie's captaincy) in 2004/05 ? And yet I clearly remember playing an Interleague match at the Red Lion - and I'm sure that Southouse was there! The answer is that prior to 2004/05 Mid Sussex B was Horsham B with exactly the same players! www.horshambarbilliards.co.uk/page26.htmlIn those days I was a reluctant participant at Interleague, not liking the Rule change whereby Captains nominate who plays who and which players will be blessed with the break. The year I turned out to play at Eastbourne was 2000/01, Neville Edwards had died the previous year and Tony Francis needed a favour. Sadly Tony himself passed on a couple of years later.

You beat us 4-3, though. We got our revenge in the second half, taking Eastbourne 4-3 at the Windmill, Crawley. :)

Acheyla The answer is that prior to 2004/05 Mid Sussex B was Horsham B with exactly the same players! The year I turned out to play at Eastbourne was 2000/01, Neville Edwards had died the previous year and Tony Francis needed a favour. Sadly Tony himself passed on a couple of years later. the story continues thus: Tony passed on capataincy to me and we continued as Horsham 'B' Horsham at that time had 3 Interleague teams and the (then) chairman of the Horsham league was pushing to poach a couple of our players for the 'A' team and merge the 'B' with the 'C' effectively disbanding Neville & Tony's team, my answer was to move the team to Mid Sussex who only had an 'A' team, leaving Horsham with their required 2 teams. I then asked the favour of Tommo and the rest is history A'Laena Sar

You should feel priviledged Clive.... I only play people against the break if I know that they're good enough to overcome the obstacle. Plus the fact that most times Darrell WITH the break was a good bet, Darrell AGAINST the break was only evens ;D

I did indeed feel privileged, Q. Playing for you that season helped me gain my confidence back after having been used sparingly by Horsham A for a few seasons only as a 'sacrificial lamb'.
Unfortunately now the standard is so high at the top level (you will recall I jumped ship) that teams only trust the break to those capable of settling the game with their first visit. This cut-throat nature of Home/Away has removed much of the competition's unpredictability and thence charm, with the Annual One-Day (where each player gets the same number of breaks) being a much fairer and more enjoyable competition...........and guess what, Eastbourne have just won promotion to the top flight for next year! 8-)
