The 2009 Grand Prix was won by Curt Driver from Medway with a comprehensive victory over Oxford's Steven Sheard.
With 16 of the best players in attendance in 4 groups of 4, the outcome of the round robin part of the competition was in doubt up to the last match in all the groups, with any one of 8 players with a possible chance to progress to the semi-final stage.
After the dust had settled on the 3rd match of the group stage, the winners of each group were :-
Steven Sheard
Curt Driver
Paul Sainsbury
Gareth Lloyd
Each group winner had won all 3 of their matches, and the scene was set for the semi-finals, with Steven playing Gareth, whilst in the other semi-final Curt lined up against Paul.
Steven ran his 1st leg out for just under K 18, and unfortunately Gareth could not make an impression on that score, and Steven was soon back at the table early in leg 2. After scoring K 5, and touching up, Gareth conceded the game to allow Steven into the final.
The other semi-final saw Curt win the toss and ask Paul tp start, and a poor start by the world runner-up of only K 3 allowed Curt to take early control with a measured K 9 break. Curt started the 2nd leg with a K 6 break, and after coming off the table, Paul tried to get the break back, but it was in vain, and immediately conceded the game.
The final between Curt and Steven saw the Oxford player start, only to miss when on K 3, which allowed Curt to grab his chance, and score K 9. to finish the 1st leg with a lead of just over K 7.
Starting the 2nd leg, Curt made K 6 break in about 8 mins, and Steven, to his credit, realised that he had no chance of making up the deficit he faced, sportingly conceded the match.
Photographs have been taken, and will be posted in due course on the forum.
