Redhill v England friendly

With the England v Jersey International almost upon us, this friendly match with two Redhill representative sides was a good opportunity for the England players to get some much needed practice playing Off the Spot. Unfortunately, five of the Mens team selected weren`t available along with the 1st & 2nd reserves, very disappointing.
This friendly is only held every other year when we can all get together and play on the AE tables close to the International.

Those that travelled down from Oxford and the other players that made the effort , including some extra reserves, certainly had a good match. Thanks to them :)

Many thanks to all the Redhill players who stayed behind to participate in this match, as they had already spent most of the day playing in the Mixed Doubles competition.

Personally it was nice to get some practice in before the Opens start in three weeks, even if it was "off the spot".....but I thought I had retired from playing with the big boys!!

Very enjoyable evening spent in pleasant company though. :D

One sad note for me was when I was marking Jenny v Jan's match on a lovely speedy table 6, as I had to call a foul on Jan when she used the cue to move the ball back to the center of the "D" but accidentally hit the ball off the "D", so I had to call a foul shot. :(
Jan wasn't about it, but accepted my decision. :-*

The rule is clear on this;

Foul shot losing break score.
J). Accidentally knocking the cue ball off the "D" with the cue. The cue ball will not be considered to be in play until it is completely clear of the "D"

One point on this rule though, should the ball be put back to the original position after leaving the "D" or left in the tray, as Jan pulled the ball back straight after doing the foul?

I put it back but Jenny asked whether she had to play that ball from the green baize or use another ball. ;D

Why would Rule 27 O) not apply, then, Keith ?

O) If the cue ball fails to reach an imaginary line through the black peg and parallel with the top cushion and does not strike another ball, it will be returned to the tray and the player loses his break. (this does not apply to the last ball of the game).

The rule that I proposed for the All England rules!! How embarrassing is that. :-[

It just goes to show that the most experienced of players can make a mistake in the heat of battle. I must apologize to Jenny for putting the ball back for her to move, although she did play a fine shot to move it. :)

On this point of knocking the off the D with the cue , does this apply if the ball is knocked off the D backwards or is it just if the ball is forward?
I ask this as I see many players pull thier cues back above the ball and sooner or later I will see this happen when chalking so would want to call it correctly!

It only applys if the ball is moved forwards into the playing area, Jim.
But a double-hit counts as a foul.
