I have noticed recently that the number of pool tables in pubs has begun to dwindle in my area, 2 pubs in my town(very small town Thrapston)have got rid of theirs one as recent as 2 weeks ago, several of the surrounding village pubs have also gotten rid, this is all to do with modernising and giving pubs new images and the restaurant side as well, this is what happened to bar billiards with the onset of pool and it looks like pool is going the same way, anyone else noticed this?

Did they go because of food tables?

In Sandwich (nr Dover) there are about 9 pubs. There are 2 bar billairds tables, 1 dart board and 1 pool table only. When I first started playing 20 years ago, there were about 4 bb tables, 7 darts boards and 5 pool tables. Only 1 pub has closed in that time.
Too many pubs want to be considered as sub-restuarants, which is a real shame and the main problem our game is facing.

Did they go because of food tables? The village ones yes, the town ones no.

Sparky will be able to confirm this, but about a year ago the Victory had both Pool and Bar Billiards, but now only has Bar Billiards ? However the Star (Rusper), the Gate (Ifield) and the Half Moon (Charlwood) - all within four miles of where I live - all did the reverse, threw the b-b's out and got pool instead. That's the problem I find with rural pubs out in the sticks, if the table doesn't get used what the landlord considers to be enough, out it goes.

Suppose with society changing to a more anti social one nowadays, that would explain why there is a decrease, people nowadays would rather go on there PC or go Binge drinking then a night out in a pub playing pool or Bar Billiards!
We need to attract to the youth and nobody is saying it's easy, but it can be done! Just got to find the right person with the right idea.
I am rare believe it or not, I would be shocked if 18 yr olds like me came along with as much hunger and passion for the game as I have! Tonight I got my first 13,000 break it was 13,010 to be exact, it felt like I won the lottery I was soo pleased!
I wish more youngsters would show an interest in Bar Billiards however pool is like you say diminishing, I wonder when it will all collapse as it is now a matter of time!

;D ;D ;D Now, Now Colemanator ;) this thread should be on the Mambas :-[ Chit Chat thread. Your punishment is ten lines saying (I must not post unrelated threads on the general bar billiards thread). If I keep this up can I become a moderator? :-* :-*

Point of order here. Firstly, it IS the correct board to post on. Mamba's chit-chat is for anything under the sun NOT related to bar billiards. And this thread was started to compare the trends between dwindling interest in Pool vs Bar Billiards. It's not the Colemanator's fault if it's veered off at a tangent to discuss Johnny's latest personal best. ::) ::) And a Distinguished Member should command respect and is (almost) above criticism. ;D ;D ;D
