A message from the old man:
"A Sussex Summer “Off the Spot” Bar Billiards League
We at The Laughing Fish would like to suggest an additional Summer competition to allow those of us who can’t afford three months in the Bahamas to carry on playing a degree of competitive Bar Billiards during what is traditionally the close season.
“Off the Spot” is a format which has been used as an occasional winter competition by some leagues. It can be quite a leveller between different standards of player, and certainly forces different shots from the norm in some circumstances, but can still be treated as a “serious” contest whilst fun to play.
To avoid Bank Holidays and normal league competition dates, we are suggesting a twelve week season running from Monday 7th June to Monday 23rd August inclusive. This means that practically a maximum of seven teams could be in a league, who can then play each other home and away.
Proposal: • Teams can be any group of at least five players who can base themselves at one venue. For the first year we would suggest no registration of players, but an understanding that no player would play for more than one team during the season! • All matches to be organized in normal league mode: o Five singles games, drawn at the start o Away team to break in games one, three, and five o ALL SHOTS TO BE PLAYED “OFF THE SPOT” o NO table or player handicaps o Normal refreshment catering! • League points awarded as one point per game win with a bonus point for the match win • Normal league and player stats will be collated and a trophy provided for the winners – we suggest a £5 per team entry fee at the start of the competition to pay for this.
We would like to invite ANY group of players from the Lewes, Brighton, or Mid-Sussex areas to register an interest. We will then put together a proposal for a league. In the event that more than six teams show an interest, we will try to divide them into more than one division based as far as possible purely on geography to minimize travel distances.
As we have proposed this from the Laughing Fish we’re quite prepared to take on the organization and reporting of results for this season.
If you think you may be interested, please contact andy@laughingfishonline.co.uk as soon as possible, but no later than THE END OF APRIL."
Obviously I appreciate that not everyone uses the forums, so if this could be passed on to anyone you think that might be able to take part so that we can get an idea of initial interest and go from there.
Many Thanks
H

Nice one H, good to see someone getting off their bot' and organising rather than complaining that there's too much/too little bb played in the summer months, I hope it proves to be an unqualified success.

Hi Henry, Just to comment that this is a skilful fusion of the best of the ideas that were being kicked around about a year ago, but for which the reception was lukewarm. Obviously a lot of thought has gone into this: - Off-the-spot - great idea.
- Joint venture Lewes/Mid Sussex - great idea.
- Zoning - great idea.
There was however a disagreement on whether it could be a team event, or Individuals along the lines of how Guernsey run theirs (favoured by BB Warrior). Maybe here again a compromise could be reached: How about: Teams of 3 but matches consisting of 6 frames - three singles and three doubles, so everyone gets 2 games and no-one is left out.I can't promise that I will be able to raise a team, but can give it whatever publicity you need (we'll mention the idea at committee, and can feature it when the time comes on the website). My prediction is that you'll get about 6 teams interested from H/Heath, B/Hill, Hurstpierpoint, Plumpton and a couple from Lewes and maybe Brighton. I hope the new League gets off the ground, and think you stand a good chance so long as you are prepared to start if off on a small scale and allow room for expansion ! Regards, tommo

Summer Cup = Great Idea! ;D
If you are planning a 12 week season, you could have 7 teams playing each other home & away. ;)
Both the 5-a-side and 3-a-side proposals have merit..... personally, I would prefer to see 4-a-side with 4 singles and 2 doubles games, as played in both West Sussex & Littlehampton in their winter Leagues. That way you could have draws, which makes the extra point given for winning the match overall even more valuable. 8-)
If you get more teams than that, then "zoning" would be a good idea, with a final to decide the overall winners.
Count us in, sure we will be able to raise a team somewhere. ;D
Hopefully, this idea will receive a more positive response than I got last year...... :-X

I will pass this on to the old man - this is his baby, i've just offered to help him out with it by posting on the forum and such. I too hope it works out.
We've also gone for a monday night to avoid a clash with the brighton summer league.
Also he seems to have miscalculated the six team thing - it should be seven as Dave pointed out and I have amended it above.

Fantastic idea, being a newbie to the Bar Billiards world I need all the practice I can get ;).
I was hoping that there would be some competitive games during the off season. I will have a chat with the Plough Captain and see if we can get a team together over the summer.

Just to point out that you actually can't fit 7 teams into a 12-week home-and-away season...
Look at it this way: each team has 1 bye week per half-season, therefore 7 bye weeks in a half-season, therefore 14 weeks in a 7-team season.

I had forgotten the "bye" matches. :-[ 6 Teams then...... or extend the season by a couple of weeks and you could get 8 playing instead. 8-) ;D ;D

We are avoiding banks holidays, so it will actually have to be leagues of 6 then!

Please count the Eight Bells in.
We would also favour the 4 singles and 2 doubles format - but would like the flexibility to field between 4 and 8 players (similar to the Charity cup) which would allow potential new players to be given an outing.
But at the end of the day, we'll fit in with whatever format you decide on. 8-)

Great news that everybody seems to be keen on the idea. We also have a convenient six teams interested with one week to go before our "deadline" for entries. I think that the idea of a four singles and two doubles format is a good one, allowing a team of four to play, but also the flexibility to field up to a further four players if desired. I've also put in a player nomination system instead of a random draw.
The proposed format is now therefore: - A twelve week season running from Monday 7th June to Monday 23rd August inclusive, starting at 8.00 p.m.. - Teams can be any group of at least four players who can base themselves at one venue. - Matches to consist of four singles games, followed by two doubles games - Home team to nominate their player(s) first - Away team to break in games one, three, and five - ALL SHOTS TO BE PLAYED “OFF THE SPOT” - NO table or player handicaps - Normal refreshment catering! - League points awarded as one point per game win with a bonus two points for a match win and one point for a draw. - Score cards will be provided. These can be posted, or the results can be e-mailed with the winning captain keeping the card in case of any query. In either case, the result should be with Andy by the end of the Thursday following the match, to enable stats to be compiled and distributed (by e-mail) before the following week's match. - Normal team and player stats will be collated by Andy Brooks and a trophy provided for the winning team. To fund this we are asking for a £5 per team entry fee with registration BY MAY 21st 2010 please.
Please will those teams who are joining us now E-MAIL andy@laughingfishonline.co.uk to provide a suitable contact point. I will then use e-mail to send a registration form to each team. Although I would like to avoid the formality of requiring players to be registered before they can play, we would still obviously like to know the names of players involved so that we can compile the stats!
Great stuff! I look forward to hearing from you all.
Andy Brooks

It looks as if we are running with the six teams listed by Tommo above. I now have e-mail contacts for all but Hayley, and will be sending out registration forms today.

- Away team to break in games one, three, and five Is that right? It would be the right thing to do if there were only 5 games, but in a 6 game format where each team gets the same number of breaks, it would be more usual to make the home team break first. That would give the away team a chance to have a look at the break before they have to take it.

I agree Ros...... but, as all of the teams are playing each other Home & Away it will even itself out in the end. ;)

All results up-to-date now on the website: www.mid-sussexbbl.co.uk/page7.htmlOne week to go, joint-leaders, everything to play for. I would say that this competition has proved to be an unqualified success.

Don't know if anything got arranged with that in the end. Its something we should sort out for next year! On the night the Final was played, Andy said that he was going to sort out a trophy for the winners..... and a HUGE cup for the Runners-Up as well..... 8-) which is obviously why we let the Hurst beat us! ::) Okay, maybe he didn't really say the bit about the runners-up and (just maybe) the better team on the night won...... but he did say that there would be a trophy for the winners and I am sure that he will arrange something..... and hopefully we can all play for it again next year! ;D It would also be interesting to see the Final averages for the players..... although I believe that Andy was missing the scores from one of the last series of matches (Eight Bells v Hurst Club) when I last saw him? Maybe either Bobhall or Ros could send him those scores, or put the result here on on the Forum? ???
