I am flabbergasted that a cup that big is missing and that no one knows of it's whereabouts, we have exhausted all avenues now, any suggestions other than what we've had already? The law may be our only option now.

The law won't want to know - unless it is 80% certain that a crime has been committed: At this early stage in tracking down its whereabouts the likelihood is it is "lost, overlooked or mislaid".
I should add that I have every sympathy with you - it is most upsetting and frustrating to an administrator to have one of the League's important assets go missing like that.
But I can relate an embarrassing tale from personal experience : The Horsham league (about 20 yrs ago when I was Secretary) had a Mens Doubles cup go walkies, and - following committee investigations and numerous letters of threat from the Secretary upon order of the committee, one person (still playing so I won't name him) was held personally responsible and forced to stand the cost of purchase of a new cup plus all the back engraving (15 years' worth) - which put him out of pocket to the tune of £60.
The original cup turned up two years later from an unlikely source no-one had considered !
All I'm saying, Ian, is don't be too hasty: legal threats are pointless, no-one would have the item away deliberately. But you could delegate some of the responsibility of the search to your committee members - get each to instigate their own line of enquiry and report back, stating who can be safely eliminated from suspicion: Just a little more back-tracking and hopefully someone will be able to come up with the goods.
Good luck !

I've now unlocked this thread and it will drift down the page into obscurity. Maybe a terrier or jack russell will find the trophy under a hedgerow somewhere ???

Great news, much relief to the administrators and a happy ending.
We all now look forward to fighting it out next year to become the first winner since 1998 ! 8-)

I have only just found out about the Northants Open Cup being found, that is fantastic news as now I can sleep at night knowing that I am not going to get a knock on the door from a hypnotherapist (Ian's word not mine) or the law. ;D
