I have updated Dave's list of entrants for this coming Sunday and the total's so far are.... Under 25's...10 Over 50's...15 Over 60's...5
It would be good if Dave could confirm whether it is an 11.30am start or earlier and answer the question that Chris N (Mrs) asked about whether there will be food available on the day.

I have just spoken to Dave and it is an 11.30am start, so players should be there by 11.00am to enable him to sort out draws and start times.
Also, there will be no hot food available, just rolls!!

Thanks Keith for collating this re numbers.
So can I ask again will this go ahead due to viability re costs of holding the event??
I have also made a mixed pairs entry. What is the minimum re this as a competition??
Thanks Chris

Trouble with not having entry forms and monies in advance is that by allowing people to just turn up on the day akward to organise and no idea if viable numbers in advance. Looking at names on forum can forsee others just attending on day.

Enjoyable day up at Reading...... 8-)
Congratulations to the winners.....
Under 25's...... Martin Cole beat Lewis Stratford in an excellent final, Lewis winning the high break award for his 9k+ break in the final to catch Martin's lead from the first game, but Martin managed to get the balls back and make sure at the end. 8-)
Over 50's....... Keith Sheard beat Dave France, Dave had the consolation of the highest break with 16k+ in the semi-finals against Phil Hawkins, with Pauline Withey the other semi-finalist. ;)
Over 60's...... Tony Martin beat Geoff Pitt in the Final..... Dave France also won the highest break in this competition with another 16k+..... ;)
Many thanks to Dave Alder for all of his hard work on the day. ;)

Yep, was a cracking day. 8-)
Was a pleasure to score the U25's final ;).
Very tense, edge of your seat nailbiting going on!
Good breaks by Martin of 3.5k and 4.5k in the first leg leaving little time for Lewis to come back, but Lewis' broke off in the 2nd leg with 9570, putting him 1300 clear of Martin, but Martin had enough time to edge back in front with a final 2.5k break despite having troubles with the right hand 50 pocket!
Very well played by both Lewis and Martin, shame Martin got the best of me in the Semi's :(, I was quite looking forward to a debut final! Best men ended up in the final though, well played to everyone. ;)
We'll try to turn up a little bit earlier next time, even though we were told by a certain 'sir' we all know that it was a 12:00 start ::)

Could Dave or someone else who was there on Sunday put on here how many players played in these 3 comp's, as Nigel has asked me but I can't remember the exact figures, so he/we can see whether there has been a drop in entrants from last year when they were held at a different time of year to this year.
Last year for the U25s there were 10 players who entered of which 6 didn't play this year. :o
Last year for the O50s there were 30 players who entered of which 16 didn't play this year. :o
Last year for the O60s there were 20 players who entered of which 11 didn't play this year. :o

I had plenty of time to score several of their games thanks to somebody knocking me out first game of the day.... ::) :P ;D With regards to the Over 50's, I think that there were about 22 entries and maybe 10/12 in the Over 60's...... but that is only a guess. :-/

Could I ask that in future the format for AEBBA tournaments are published in advance.. so entrants know exactly what to expect before travelling.
Not applicable to AEBBA Opens, only other competitions run by AEBBA.
Those poeple with childcare issues or other issues need to know regarding length of the day and will they enter if there is or not a plate considering the drive. ( not me as I have given my views re the plate and happy to drive re no plate )
Ta Chris

Hope everyone who went to the over 50/60s and under 25s had a good day and well done to the winners. sounds like the numbers may have been slightly down for the over 50/ 60s - it would be interesting to know why players who usually play didn't go - did they know about the change of date - will they go to the Grand Prix weekend expecting to play in the over 50s/60s?!- I hope not cos they may be disappointed!
There have been some comments re getting formats/ draws done before the day so they can be published. This was brought up at the AGM and although I agreed in principle it would be great to do this in practice it would be unworkable in my opinion.
Many remember I tried to do this for the alternative rules a few years back where 50+ players entered beforehand, a draw was done and start times given out only for around 20 players not to show, 5 or so players who did not enter showed up expecting to play - and to be honest it was a nightmare for the organiser - me! So the players who did show up on time suffered, not the ones who did not bother to show or even phone to tell me they could not come Another problem with doing a draw for group style tournament like the mixed pairs is what if you have 4 groups of 4 and 3 teams from one group fail to show for one reason or another, you are left with 3 groups of 4 and a group of 1....it could happen and you are left with either the problem of a redraw which always will leave someone hard done by.
So for competitions such as the ones we had on Sunday it is far better to see who turns up on the day - arrange each tournament so that we have the best format for each where players get as many games as possible whilst still finishing at a reasonable time.
Therefore I would say in response to chris' point above is that it would be very difficult to provide an accurate format for a tournament for advance, but expect to be at the venue for the whole day if you are planning to get to the final or later stages where the tournament will finish about 7-8pm.
For example the next tournament is the mixed pairs will most likely be arranged into groups as we normally get between 16 and 24 pairs and you would have 4 groups. If we got say between 25 and 32 pairs we would maybe increase the number of groups to 8 of smaller sizes. There would be a point of course where groups would not be feasible and you would then go into a straight knockout formats for any entry above 32 pairs, and then maybe you would include a plate to guarantee two matches for everyone.
You could of course go down the line of everyone entering beforehand and if you don't you don't get in, but looking at the numbers Dave had before Sunday the numbers would have been very much lower. I think it good manners to let the TD know of your intention to show up to play a tournament, but in my experience a good 50% of players won't tell you they are coming and show up on the day with no warning. Entry fees or even refundable entry fees have been discussed also but personally I think it would be an nightmare of a job for Dave to collect a load of entry fees and produce entry forms etc for every AEBBA tournament
I think we have the best system in place, different things have been tried before and not really worked better than just getting everyone to show up and doing a draw on the day. As I say i think if you wish to enter these tournaments in Reading you have to basically expect to be there for most of the day with an 11.30 start and an evening finish.
