Here it is in all its glory, folks: Click here: www.billingshurstbarbilliards.co.uk/ Let me know what you think. I am particularly pleased with how the weekly reports (taken from this Forum) have come out - they bear witness to this famous old league continuing to thrive with a certain amount of interest.

Fantastic job Tommo, clearly a lot of effort has gone into the new site. Sorry that the later years have not been recorded but lets hope someone has a record somewhere. Sadly I have only been around a couple of years so cannot help.
Well done to you and all others involved in setting up the site.

Well done to you and all others involved in setting up the site. Trevor Well, Trevor, so far I've only had help from you, Dave, Jim, Matt and Richard, so you are the guys that deserve the credit ! It goes to show how entertaining and comprehensive your write-ups have been this year, if I was able to use them as a chronicle for the season just passed. Peter Gibbs will be providing the missing pieces of the jigsaw, I spoke to him at the Horsham Masters and he confirmed he had all the appropriate records. Good to get some favourable feedback at this early stage........... [EDIT] I should add my thanks also to Dave Ingram for supplying the Interleague records, and Ian Giffen for the very latest on the Jubilee Team Knockout (draw now included).

Peter Gibbs has come up with the goods and has sent me a total of 16 files.
His records complement those that I had and when collated form a pretty good history of the Billingshurst League.
Check out the Hall of Fame: we now have Cup winners/runners-up going back to 1991 and an almost complete set of Final league tables going back to 1970. (These seven years are the only ones missing: 1982/83; 1986/87; 1987/88; 1989/90; 1991/92; 2000/01 & 2001/02)
We will now concentrate on trying to fill the gaps between 1970 and 1990 for Competitions, but if anyone can help with the league tables for the two seasons starting this century, and a list of the Jubilee Team Knockout winners and runners-up, that would be the icing on the cake. 8-) ;D

Yippee ! Seek and ye shall find.........have turned up tables for 82/83, 86/87 and 87/88. 8-) 86/87 are not quite 'final' but in some years publication of the final table in the local paper was by no means certain anyway. So just 4 years now are missing.

Website is undergoing a partial re-vamp at present. May take a few days for cyberspace to catch up with all the changes made. ;) All come through at last ! Main changes are a revamp of the Hall of Fame page, and Home/Away and One-Day Interleagues are now on separate pages. Website 98% complete !

Now 99% complete with the addition of early Interleague................
Some of the names found in the course of research came as a surprise, and certainly brought back old times. (Applicable also to opposing sides).
Last piece of the jigsaw will be to add all Billingshurst's successes at County Level (Singles, Doubles, etc.)
Will have to chase Peter Gibbs for the averages 2000- onwards.

Loadsa photos now added, particularly on the early league tables pages - also to substantiate the recently added County/National pages.
For some reason 50% of them appear to be of Southwater CC - the West Sussex County Times must have had a soft spot for them ! (Those were the days, when WSCT used to send a roving reporter around, on League nights..............)
Still to go on - a) some of old Finals Nights, to fit these in they may have to go on the main Hall of Fame page, and b) Peter Gibbs has now supplied me with averages for 2005-onwards which will plug a big gap, but much preparation woork involved first.
However did I used to find the time to go to work ? ;D ;D ;D

Clippings are a bit on the small size, I can enhance them if people prefer (your thoughts please ?) Meanwhile, for a bit of fun, you can have a go at trying to recognise the various competitors from the too-small images before I give the game away ! Answers on here - some are really easy, others not so much.

Clive, Vern has given me the Billingshurst Doubles Winners Trophy, probably because he doesn`t want to clean it before it gets returned ;D
It`s inscribed on the neck, "Mackeson Cup" and goes back to the 1965/66 season. On the base it has inscribed "Pairs Cup Winners". Was the trophy reused ? Anyway, below is the list of winners on the cup.
Hope you find this information helpful. The names in yellow are the only ones that you don`t have for the pairs.
65/66 Cricketers A 66/67 Half Moon A 67/68 Fox & Hounds A 68/69 Hornbrook 69/70 Red Lion 70/71 Three Compasses 71/72 Three Compasses 72/73 Three Compasses 73/74 Five Oaks 74/75 White Horse A 75/76 Three Compasses 76/77 Green Man 77/78 White Hart 78/79 Mucky Duck 79/80 Mucky Duck 80/81 Five Oaks 81/82 Coot A 82/83 Alfold SC A 83/84 Alfold SC B 85/86 G McCarthy/J Turner 86 G McCarthy/J Turner (presume 86/87) 87 T Wheeler/T Hawkes (presume 87/88) 88 T Wheeler/T Hawkes (presume 88/89)(you`ve got down K Wood/A Mann ?) 91 A Barnes/C Parsons (presume 90/91) 91/92 J Thayre/P Barnett 92/93 K Wood/P Phillips 93/94 J Thayre/P Barnett 94/95 K Wood/P Phillips 95/96 J Tidy/D Burrell 96/97 K Wood/P Phillips 97/98 K Wood/P Phillips 99/00 K Wood/P Phillips 2000/01 K Wood/P Phillips (you`ve got down R & D Dewdney as winning) 03/04 J Thayre/R Padfield (you`ve got down M Fairs/N Dunn as winning) 04/05 R Dewdney/D Dewdney

Thank you Richard for providing some useful 'missing information'. It all made perfect sense, and I have already updated it all on the website (page 41 - Hall of Fame).
You have recognised some anomalies, and these have been ironed out. cup engraving is supposed to be 100% reliable, but unfortunately isn't - there are many ways it can go wrong, the favourite being when a year is missed and the gap is filled retrospectively by making a false assumption. It has been known for the runners-up cup and winners to be given out the wrong way round on the night, and the competitors going ahead and getting their names engraved anyway ! This happens in a lot of Leagues.
The most reliable way to know who won etc is actually to be there yourself at the time! Followed closely by getting hold of the relevant Finals Night programme and keeping any press clippings associated with the event.
With regard to your question about the provenance of the Cup, what you have there is the original (priceless) cup which has been used for Mens Doubles ever since inception in 1965/66. It would have been called the Mackeson Cup probably because it was donated to the League by Whitbreads. Back in the 60's and 70's the brewerys took a lot of interest and magnificent trophies were quite often sponsored by Brickwoods, Whitbreads, Charringtons, King & Barnes, Ind Coope, Friary Meux, Courage - and of course Watneys (eg the Watney Mann cup).
In the early days of the Leagues' competitions, there was the tendency not to credit the players' names but only the pub they played for.
Anything else you happen to find will be gratefully received.

Unfortunately there is no more space on the base to put any more names on. (the last year being 2004/05) I don`t think the league can afford to buy a new one, and even if they did, the winners would have to pay themselves for the engraving. Will try to put a photo of the cup up at a later date.

I presume in the Billingshurst League the onus is on the winners to get their names engraved on the cup. If there is no room left, it's easily surmountable by the raising of the cup onto an extra plinth, but the League should pay for that. So you'd be best advised to contact Peter Gibbs.
Yes a photo of the cup would be great for the website.

This was discussed at the AGM this year. The plan is to get all trophies up to date including upgrades to allow for future engraving.

Thanks also to Dave for the week's summary.
The latest updates are taking a while to come through, unfortunately.

I am expecting to be asked to make one or two corrections once Peter has found his magic book! ;) A lot of research has been performed by Peter Gibbs recently on the years 1996-2000, where up to now information has been sparse. Much fuller representation of the averages for this period to be found on Page 44. 2000-01 is being worked on, and 2001-02 to follow in due course. Peter will also try to come up with final league tables for these two years. 8-)

Have just turned up a copy of the Roll of Honour for season 1989/90, including the top 10 averages for both divisions. Records updated on web pages 41, 42 and 43. 8-) The four years prior to 89/90 remain as a 'black hole' in the Billingshurst records.
