The question really is, which five do we want on at the end to be able to take the penalties ? ;D

Well, the scoring so far is three goals to tommo:
Goal one - France shouldn't be there (now they're out) Goal two - England to play Milner and Joe Cole (they did and we finally won a game) Goal three - Paraguay to top their group (they did, and Italy are now going home).
;D ;D ;D

I don't believe in attacking wing backs, I prefer a flat back four (you couldn't beat the old Arsenal defensive line !) and specialist winger(s). So I'd drop Ashley Cole, who deserts his post too often, in favour of the returning Carragher but apart from that would keep the 'winning formula'. Takes a bit to get used to it! A great power formation when you have the players that can do it! And we actually have! Official Player of the last world cup? Ashley Cole playing the same way Tou have to rely on the midfield being able to cover and Barry did it brilliantly, centre backs have to be able to stand tall..and they did! The difference will be Ashley Cole and Glenn Johnson Germany will not be able to deal with the pace or the extra men up front, Must say Milner played a blinder! 8-) Heskey is trying to play a role owned by Mark Hughes but with the best will in the world he is not Sparky! Think Crouch would have had it away on Wednesday...but we will never know after playing the end of the game without a striker! And by the way! Player power? Strange how all changed for that game with a stubborn manager famed for 4 4 2! Reckon whatever Capello is already gone!

John Terry's performance in the Slovenia game rated a 10. Great committment, not in evidence in our boys in the first two games.
And Milner proved he could do a job for England, reprising the Beckham role with his telling crosses. But it was only Slovenia.
Sterner tests are to come. Very much looking forward to Portugal v Brazil tomorrow. ;)

Reminded me of the champions league game when he dived the same to get his head between boot and ball....shook his head and carried on!
'If Capello's system looks boring from the stands, it's even worse to play in' Jean-Pierre Papin
Capello's last Milan triumph was built on the arrival of two genuine superstars up front - Roberto Baggio and George Weah. Still committed to 4-4-2,
At Roma Capello showed for the first time his tactical versatility, abandoning 4-4-2 in favour of an aggressive 3-4-1-2 that allowed him to accommodate Gabriel Batistuta, Marco Delvecchio and Francesco Totti up front, as well as attack-minded wing-backs Cafu and Vincent Candela

All good theory Tim, and hints of a diamond formation in the last game: agree, less rigidity = freedom to actually play.
But here we are taking part in the World Cup, and we're still experimenting with formations ! Hoping no doubt that the serendipity of 1966 will repeat itself (when our best player Jimmy Greaves got injured and Hurst and Peters were brought in which found the winning formula).
This would mean Rooney getting injured/sent off.............but if that's what it takes for England to win the World Cup.... ;) ;D

If we could not top a group with USA, Algeria and Slovenia we don't have a hope in hell. It means we play The Germans and if successful Argentina, vastly different to Ghana & probably Uruguay
Re Strikers, it's not ability it's who gets the ball in the back of the net and that's not been Rooney for England. Apart from which Rooney'll lose his rag sooner or later and cost us dear. Crouch offers something different to what defenders are used to and that causes uncertainty.
Cappello has given us the best qualifying competition for years and we are ready to sack him already.
The Premiership is now close on 75% non English players, what has he got to pick from? It won't make the slightest difference who is the manager until we have a sufficient pool of players to pick from who are not exhausted at the end of the most arduous season in world football.

Sav They certainly looked tired and knackered in the first two games. And we won the last one out of sheer desperation, backs to the wall, scraping through by the odd goal. We can't match the flair and movement of the South American teams. Realistically, Losing Semi-finalists is the best we can aspire to. And if we manage that it will (rightly) be hailed as a success.

I had been looking forward to 2 of the matches played today...... very contrasting games in the end. :o
Brazil v Portugal..... meant to be the "purists" game..... ended up more like a bad tempered training game and a 0-0 no score bore.... ::)
Spain v Chile..... I really enjoyed watching this game and think that Chile are one of the most exciting teams to watch in the World Cup..... 8-) .....even if they are also one of the least disciplined! :o
For the first 20 minutes they ran rings around Spain...... the little winger Sanchez was brilliant, even when Spain put 3 players around him he still seemed to have so much time..... but then the superb opportunist goal scored by David Villa, the well taken second goal and the sending off totally changed the game...... was the trip on Torres deliberate..... he went down as if he had been shot and certainly stayed down for a very long time...... ::) ..... or was it just an unfortunate accident ???
Looking at the replay, my first impression was that he was looking at the ball while he was running and only minimal contact was made..... but after looking at it from various angles, he did seem to have one quick look at Torres..... and then keep running, so perhaps it was intentional. :-/
Chile did well to pull one back, but Spain always looked in control after that......
So, Spain v Portugal and Brazil v Chile....... both Brazil and Portugal will have to play much better than they did today...... personally I think Chile could be a tough test for Brazil and they may pull off a shock. 8-)

A fair assessment of the day, Warrior. ;)
I too was left cold by the Portugal-Brazil bore draw. And captivated by Chile-Spain. Not least by the interesting players' names - Spain had a 'Bravo' and Chile a 'Ponce' (who inevitably got booked). ;D ;D

'Er Indoors has drawn Mexico in her work's sweepstake, so I am backing them to cause a few upsets and possibly make the final.
Sorry to say England seem to be just a one trick pony this tournament with too much reliance on Rooney who couldn't score in a brothel at the moment. Or could he .............. ?

Auntie Pauline told me that her team in the sweepstake are still going.........Ghana :o :o ::) ;D
My tip to win is....Holland to beat Argentina
England to beat Germany with Rooney being the star in a 2-0 win and then get torn apart by Messi for Argentina in a 4-1 loss :'(

Presumably posted when we were 0-2 down, through defence not doing their job. Compare the discipline of the Germany back four. But Matty Upson, a great header, and then.........1966 in reverse, inconceivable that a 'goal' from Lampard which clearly crossed the line was disallowed. Now it's 'game on' England are getting more and more possession, and the Germans are suddenly the ones who are panicking. Surely we can't lose in such a third cruel way (after Hand of God, and the usual penalties) ? I'm beginning to think that we're going to see a 4-2 win for England, it's that sort of crazy occasion. 8-)

I just hope that another goal is scored and the match and England's fate is not decided by an awful decision.
Yes they were 2 - 0 down when I gave up and switched the PC on.

2 'skill points' earned by Sav for the words 'Doom' and 'Gloom'.
The Germans caught our defence napping on too many occasions. :'(

You got the 4-1 loss bit right Milko ! Lets get rid of the Mafia Don and get some plain talking English speaking manager to kick ass in time for the next world cup.

The Germans caught our defence napping on too many occasions. :'( Sav clearly has much more skill than the England players then..... ;D Schoolboy errors in defence..... >:( ...... midfield players all over the place and unable to link up with strikers...... ::) ..... Rooney & Defoe had no real service and when they did get the ball they never looked like scoring. :'( And, when we were desperate to score a goal, who do we bring on...... Heskey..... who hasn't scored since February. :o :o I'm sure that someone will say that had Lampard's "goal" been given (as it should have been) then the game would have been different..... maybe it would have been...... but overall it was a truly awful performance by England, which made a very average Germany side look like world beaters...... :'( :-X

Blimey, 4pts to milko, he's obviously got a crystal milkbottle. ;D 1pt for Stormin's comment, Sven was a better manager than Capello, and I think Stuart Pearce should be our man. We could have done with him on the pitch today. ::)

i did and they were rubbish No, poor old England weren't even that good...... :'( Argentina v Mexico was a much better game, so much more technical skill to watch from both sides even if Lionel Messi hardly got involved in the second half..... :o A shame that another awful decision by the referees assistant led to the first goal for Argentina.... ::) ..... but the other goals were taken brilliantly. 8-) So, a repeat of the quarter-final of 4 years ago when Germany beat Argentina (on penalties of course....! :P) but I can't see the same thing happening this time. ;)
