This years final of the Abington Glass sponsored summer handicap league will be a re-run of the 2006 final between Burton Cons and The Exiles.
Burton, who were the group A winners are the holders of the trophy, Exiles, who also play from the Cons, and were the group A runners up, will be hoping that they can overcome their rivals this time.
Burton had a not so easy passage to the final when they first had to overcome semi final opponents The Crown & Anchor Saints, first travelling to the Crown, the out come was a 2-2 draw. Burton found it difficult to overcome the points disadvantage, due to their handicaps on a tricky table, where getting the break shot down once was considered a success that evening. Tom Ablitt gave Burton the lead only for Chris Lawman to lose out to Simon Millward, Ian Coleman restored Burtons advantage to make it 2-1.
In the doubles match Simon Coleman partnered son Stephen but they both never looked in it as Saints levelled the game.
In the return leg at Burton, The Cons went 1 down as Stephen Coleman lost out to Dave Wilton, Chris Lawman levelled matters and effectively put the Cons in the driving seat with his 10,080 total,The consistent Ian Coleman made it 2-1 and 4-3 overall. This then left the doubles leg, Saints needing to win this leg and win by a clear 8180. Burton put youngsters Tom Ablitt and Stephen Coleman in, Tom played superbly to get the lions share of the 5140 total and Burton took the match and a place in the final 5-3.
In other semi The Exiles romped home in the first leg by overcoming The Storm by 4-0, Mick Loake, Ian Jellis and John Burch took all three singles frames, Mick and Ian then teamed up to claim the doubles leg over the shocked Kevin Ayres and Jason Dunkley. The Exiles now only needed to go to The Storms venue, the Headlands and want only one leg for the win.
But as with anything else, it aint over 'till it's over, Exiles needing one leg to make the final, also had a 10,000 lead from that first match, quite handy should the game go to a draw and aggregate would be needed, well go to a draw it nearly did, the Storm began to blow as they took the first three legs through Shane King, Matt Thomson and Jason Dunkley, the whole game now hinged on the last leg doubles match, Storm needed to win and win by a clear 6000, the leg was tight but it went the way of Mick Loake and Ian Jellis to send the Exiles to their third successive final. The final itself is over two legs the first this Monday at Burton Cons.
