Congratulations go to Burton Cons for retaining the Abington Glass summer handicap cup after beating the Exiles in a thrilling final. Burton, made hard work of the victory by losing the first leg 3-1, Ian Jellis gave the Exiles the lead only for that to be cancelled out by Ian Coleman, Mick Loake then restored the Exiles' advantage and then teamed up with Jellis for the pairs leg victory. The aggregate score was in favour of the Exiles by a whisker over 2000.
The second leg saw Simon Coleman (8130) pull The Cons back in it by claiming the first leg, Mick Loake for the Exiles then ended Ian Colemans eleven match unbeaten run. This meant now that the Exiles were one leg away from victory or the game would go to aggregate score should The Cons win both. Chris Lawman for the Cons, finding himself virtually dead and buried mustered a last gasp 4k break at the end to see off Ian Jellis and again the Cons breathed a sigh of relief. It was then left to the doubles leg and victory for either side would be enough, it was the pair of chris Lawman and Simon Coleman however that would have the last say by taking the leg (6680-2680) and the trophy for the Cons.
The previous day saw Northants taking part in the annual county championships at Reading. Northants in division two this year finished in third place. They lost their first match 4-3 against Surrey, a match that could've gone either way. Victory however did come against Buckinghamshire 5-2. The county then needed to beat Oxfordshire B by a 5-2 margin to stand any chance of getting promoted back to division one, this however didn't happen as the strong Oxford side cruised to a 6-1 victory, this match did have a high spot for Northants as Chris Lawman played out the table from start to finish, the first time that he has achieved this feat, for a total of 14940, which earned him the highest break prize of the day.
The new winter league kicks off on October 8th, there are eleven teams entered, six in the first division and five in the second, the format will be that every team will play each other twice, one home and once away giving a total of twenty matches.
