Ok, Dave, You're in the right place to ask. It's worth putting the link on here as it ticks all the boxes for me as to what looks like a good table. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280617723771Gets my vote at that price. We reckon for second-hand tables in tip-top condition: Jelkes £800 SAMs £600 Riley £500 May be worth just asking the question "are the legs sound, do they fit rock solid ?" It certainly looks a fine example to me, but don't just take my word for it, see if it gets two further nods of approval, one from Sav would make it gold standard. ;)

It certainly has enough pegs! Is that the Sheffield version of the game? ;D

Light Oak Jelkes, to me the most aesthetically pleasing version of the three Jelkes iterations.
Looks in good nick but better close-up pictures should be obtained, particularly of the underside of the front of the slate. Seller should be asked if there is any evidence of cracks or repairs to the underside of the slate between the 'D' and the fifty holes, also whether the legs are firm and screw home tightly.
Against:
Seller has little provenance.
No Bar Billiards Ltd name plate on the table to suggest it was one of theirs and refurbished professionally.
No clock.
"Refurbished" should be taken with a pinch of salt as there is no way of knowing what quality of fast lightweight cloth was used or whether it has been pulled tight enough or whether the refurbusher knows the first thing about Bar Billiards.
The seller clearly has not got a clueabout the game.
Conclusion: VERY interesting but proceed with caution and insist on cash on collection and walk away if you find anything on collection. Without a clock I would say that is about its money

Summed up to a T.
So two more questions to ask the vendor after the one about the legs (on Jelkes, damage to the threads is extremely difficult to rectify):
2. Is the slate sound ?
3. Does it have a timing mechanism ? (On the face of it, no - the usual handle not there. But sometimes you find an electronic mechanism has been fitted, with a coin slot and button round on the left hand side.)

Re Timing mechanism;
Remember that removal of the clock also more often than not involves removal of the bar and thus clock replacement may not be that easy.

Thanks all you guys for responding to my post I have asked the seller if he could provide more pictures also the date and maker of the table
I think someone on the group has asked the question regarding the leg fixings so hopefully I can get a better idea before making a bid.
One thing that bothers me slightly is the length of the auction which is quite short and the other thing is the position of the pegs. Maybe the seller did not do the refurb if not I will ask who did
Thanks again Dave

the other thing is the position of the pegs. Dave The pegs are of no consequence. I have two sets of mushrooms and sometimes have a fun game with my grandaughters with a peg covering each pocket ! Take it that you are being supplied with three spare white pegs, the number of balls supplied being more important.........

Had some pretty unconvincing replies to my questions and as the table is not particularly local to Aylesbury I think I'm going to pass on this one. In the world of pinball machines of which I'm much more familiar, vague and non specific answers are often an indication of an e-bay scam.
However I'm grateful for all the help and advice given by you guys especially on the prices I can expect to pay for machines in tip top condition. So if anyone here has a very nice Jelks in top condition I have cash waiting.
Cheers Dave

With the benefit of hindsight, the one up in Scotland formally owned by Sav would have been the safest bet of the two, having better provenance.
A pity it would involve a 600-odd mile round journey from Aylesbury. ::)
Hopefully one equally suitable - but more local to you - will come up soon.
