What an amazing evening at the Ambassadeur hotel in Jersey :o
The Ladies had a much tougher match this year. With the addition of Chelle & Sami Baden and the returning Jenny Wallace playing for the Home side. At one point, the Jersey girls were 3-1 up in the 1st session. The England ladies managed to square it up to 3-3 at half way. As the second half unfolded, England took a hold and went on to a 12-6 victory. Scores in more detail to follow.
The men had a fright, when seemingly in control, they lost a couple of key legs and the match went down to the last 4 games, eventually with the result going England`s way 17-16. As usual, there were a few heroes in both matches, i will put the details on later when i get home.

Here are the scores in more detail. The scoring system was 1 point per leg and 1 point per aggregate - 33 points in total at stake.
1st series Dennis Heleur v Nigel Senior - Table A This table caused a few problems for us. As much as Nigel tried, he couldn`t quite get going. Dennis plodded along and managed to secure 3 points for the home team 7490 & 4110..................................2180 & 2140 3 - 0
Mick Eouzan v Paul Sainsbury - Table B Paul played a great match. Initially opening with 2k+. Mick did get them back but broke down. Paul then set a good lead going into the second leg. Mick never settled and eventually went through the black peg when about 1k up, virtually handing all 3 points to Paul 490 & 0.........................9750 & 7330 0 - 3 3 - 3
2nd series Sean le Beauvant v Keith Sheard - Table A Back to table A again and both players struggled with the top. Keith edged the first leg but had a more solid second, giving another 3 points to England 2230 & 100............................3820 & 7900 0 - 3 3 - 6
Steve Ahier v Steven Sheard - Table D This turned out to be the match of the night. Jersey`s undisputable number 1 for many years against Steven (in great form on the Jersey tops). Steven kicked off the first leg with 10k and added another 4k for good measure. Against any other jerseyman, this might have been enough. Steve set about the chase and although a couple of excursions up to the 10 hole, caught Steven with about a minute to spare. Great match 200 & 15860.............................14880 & 0 2 - 1 5 - 7
3rd series Fred Jeanne v Kevin Tunstall - Table B I think i`ve played just about every International player from Jersey at some time over the years, but this was a first versus Fred. He opened with 3k but then forced a 50/30, where both balls missed. I retrieved the balls and made a steady 10k for the first leg. In the second i made 9k before touching up. Fred made another 3k after. 3330 & 3680.............................10680 & 9740 0 - 3 5 - 10
Graham Bisson v Richard Wooton - Table C This was another table that caused some problems for us. Saying that, Richard played it superbly in the first leg to open up with 10k. Graham had a sneaky look near the end, which certainly helped him in the second, playing it out for 11k+. Another great match, hard luck Richard. 1790 & 11350.........................10210 & 0 2 - 1 7 - 11
4th series Keith Vibert v Jim Millward - Table B Jim never seemed to have any problems on this good top, comfortably taking both legs against Keith. 2460 & 3870.........................5520 & 8630 0 - 3 7 - 14
At this point, things looked to be going very well for the visitors. A 7 point lead and crucially, up in Mark`s match with a break to come, but behind in the other three.
5th series Dave Gallichan v Geoff Jukes - Table A Geoff was another to struggle on this top, never making any impact at all. Dave played it extremely well in the second leg for almost a run out. 7610 & 13540........................1220 & 100 3 - 0 10 - 14
Bob King v Chris Newson - Table B Chris was struggling to find any consistency on here and eventually lost the first leg by 2k. The second turned out to be a match winner for us, although Bob was 3k up, Chris made up the deficit near the end for a mammoth 1 point. 3890 & 4880..............................1250 & 5250 2 - 1 12 - 15
Harry Barbet v Simon Ellam - Table C Jersey virgin Simon had his work cut out against the experienced Spider on this top (Graham & Richard made it look easy earlier, but it wasn`t). A couple of chances in the first and one in the second weren`t enough to trouble Harry in the end. 3340 & 7520.........................2460 & 1870 3 - 0 15 - 15
James Jeanne v Mark Trafford - Table D Mark`s good form from November carried on here. James broke down fairly early and Mark made a great 8k break for the lead, crucially with his break to come. Although he opened with nearly 5k, James chased him down to take the second leg. 2930 & 8470...........................8760 & 4710 1 - 2 16 - 17
An amazing match that swung one way and then almost the other. So many crucial 1 pointers, Steven, Richard & Chris, that were almost as good as an aggregate win. Remember guys, without those points, we would have lost, so well done to you and the rest of my team. Some great matches and a fabulous result against a strong Jersey team. Hard luck to them ;)
I musn`t forget the reserve match between Ashley Mallory & Martin Smith - Table C Martin also had a good World championship in November and was very proud to pull on his first England shirt, albeit in the reserve match. We never expect reserves to travel, especially as it`s at their own expense, but Martin certainly enjoyed the experience. This game was on the tricky table C and Martin made a decent break in the second leg to take what would have been an aggregate win. 3830 & 2030..............1640 & 6650
The Ladies scores will be put on sometime this week By Pauline or Milko as I hardly saw any of their matches.

Good report, Kevin.
It certainly was a great match that was played in a very friendly atmosphere. Good to see that it was held in a much bigger and better room than two years ago with a very good barman on duty. Well done to all the new caps and the rest of the team in what was a memorable win against a very fine team.
I really did struggle with the table (5 breaks :o) in the 1st game but changed the flat batteries in the computer in my head (Diet Coke’s) as they weren’t working properly, to a better power supply (John Smiths) for the 2nd game and it certainly done the trick!! ;D
I may now go back into retirement. ;)
Keith
PS I will post the Ladies match report once Pauline has done it and given it to me.

JERSEY V ENGLAND LADIES RESULTS
What a brilliant result for the England Men’s & Ladies teams.
I totally agree with Kevin in that it was a really good evening at the Ambassadeur Hotel in Jersey. The room it was held in this year was excellent with plenty of room to watch the games sitting or standing, much better than two years ago when it was in the smaller room and we couldn’t get to see many of the games.
Well what an exciting match between the Jersey ladies & England ladies, I must admit I thought Jersey might bring out a stronger team this year especially with Michelle, Sami Baden, Jill, June, Tina and also with Jenny Wallace coming back into the team after a few years break. A very good team for Jersey as Kevin said we were 3-1 down after the 1st 4 matches but we evened it out to 3-3 by the end of the 1st half of the match. The second half of the evening saw England Ladies pulling back to a winning score of 12-6. A very well done to my girls, and also to Michelle and her girls on a much better match this year much closer than usual, I can’t remember a time when we have been in the situation of being 3-1 down. Please see below for all the scores and match reports in more detail: -
1st Series Tina McGrane v Jean Brackenridge on Table ‘C’ Tina & Jean were very well matched in their 1st game, it was nip & tuck all the way through with the one up causing most problems on this table but Jean came out on top with 3,420 – 3,020. The second leg saw Jean pulling ahead slightly to stay in front of Tina winning this leg with 2,830 – 1,640 giving Jean the overall win. 3-0 to England
Sami Baden v Chrissie Newson on Table ‘D’ Chris & Sami struggled in the 1st game gaining scores and then losing them through the balls landing in the middle of the table with the cushions throwing high they were not easy to get. Chris was unlucky to lose a 2,000 break and never pulled ahead Sami played a very good 200 shot to clinch the first leg 930 – 910. The 2nd leg Sami opened with a 1,200 break but Chris’s experience especially on the 50 pocket saw her pull ahead to win the 2nd game with 4,500 – 1820. 2-1 to England
2nd Series Jenny Wallace v Hayley Tunstall on Table ‘B’ This was Hayley’s 2nd game for England after playing two years ago & this again was a very close 1st game between Jenny & Hayley, it was nip & tuck all the way through. Hayley needed 200 to win the 1st leg, Jenny missed the 100 the 1st time but didn’t miss it the 2nd time leaving the score very close with Jenny coming out on top with 1,660 – 1,450. Hayley dominated the 2nd leg, which included a 2,700 break. Jenny was not able to keep up with Hayley in this game and Hayley won the 2nd leg 6,090 – 760. 2-1 to England
Michelle Baden & Alison Norman on Table ‘C’ Michelle has played for England Ladies a few times but this was her 1st time for Jersey Ladies & I knew from experience she was not going to be easy for Alison (Alison last played for the England side 19 years ago in Jersey) so well done Alison on getting back into the team this year. Michelle played really well and won the 1st leg 3,890 with Alison losing the score she had of about 1,700 near the end of the 1st leg. 3,890 – 0. Michelle yet again dominated the 2nd leg with nothing seeming to want to go down the pockets for Alison. Michelle won this leg with 5,850 – 1,240 giving Michelle the overall win of 3-0 to Jersey.
3rd Series June Hopwood v Pauline Withey on Table ‘A’ June had the 1st break & missed both balls; from then on we did not manage to get the break back throughout the 1st leg. It was then a case of any scores accumulated to try & get them on the board especially after seeing a couple of the England men struggling on this table. I won this game with 1,580 – 540. The 2nd leg I had the break & did the whole break sequence even getting the double but it was the only time I was able to achieve it & yet again it was a case of keeping as many scores as possible. June played some really good cushion shots, but was unlucky in losing some of the scores she had achieved. This leg I won 3,780 – 1,710 giving Pauline an overall win of 3-0 to England.
4th Series Jill Barbet v Jenny Florey on Table ‘D’ This is only Jenny’s second time in Jersey & Jill has been a regular member of the Jersey Ladies team for a number of years but this never phased Jenny and she went straight in with a break of 3,120. After this break Jill & Jenny both struggled to get much score on the board & Jenny won the 1st leg with 3,780 – 850. The 2nd leg saw Jill break off with about 1,800 with Jenny building scores but this time it was Jill who came back & beat Jenny with a score of 4,060 – 1,850. This match ended up very close overall with Jenny coming out on top with 5,630 – 4,910. 2-1 to England.
As you can see a fantastic match and I am so proud of my girls and being Captain again this year. Also well done to Michelle & your girls for giving us a brilliant match. I just hope you will be able to bring a team over to England next February but I know this isn’t easy as it is even more expensive for you to come to us, than it is for us to come to Jersey.
I hope I have given an accurate account of all your matches as it has all been from memory, please forgive me if I’ve missed anything important when I was watching 2 tables at once.
See you all soon
Pauline xx

What lovely reports from both captains Kev and Pauline... our thanks to you both for all your care and support x
Have decided that fligts are against us, never seen the plane roll so much on landing !!! Going to Guernsey by boat with fingers crossed ::)
Despite that....
Lovely weekend, extremely well organised, hotel excellent and extremely good of the Ambassadeur to let us book in early as the room was available. Great atmosphere and agree with Pauline a far better part of the hotel to hold it in. A real team spirit, although I was extremely tired from the flight experience and got to bed straight away after the presentation.
Really lovely warmth from all the Jersey side which was truly appreciated. Especially from Mr Bisson at Breakfast the next day, Chris may not have been awake at the time but I have told him and he is really proud and chuffed !!
Winners or not more importantly it is good to have such people around you and be part of this sport.
Thank you JERSEY and to all those behind the scenes e.g. Graham

What lovely reports from both captains Kev and Pauline... our thanks to you both for all your care and support x Have decided that fligts are against us, never seen the plane roll so much on landing !!! Going to Guernsey by boat with fingers crossed ::) I could write a book about all the scary flights I have been on, however we are all probably much safer 'up there' than on the roads, with less things to hit. For example; One of the most interesting fights was when we burst a tyre on landing on the 'flying shed' going to the Jersey Open about 10 years ago. Landed in Jersey in the snow this year on a Blue Island flight, close to a 180 degree skid. Nearly hit Brehon Tower flying back to Guernsey from Alderney in the fog. Took off from Alderney on the grass strip and plunged over the cliff as Joey did not have enough power. Just a few examples of many. Living on an Island, 8-) it is all par for the course. And they say a cat has nine lives................ ::) ::) ::)

Congratulations to all the England side who served their country proud! Good to hear full details of what sounded a really memorable victory... I find it quite unbelievable that Clive's kind comment is the only commendation that has been posted on this forum by anyone else other that the players themselves of two fabulous team performances by both the Mens & Ladies England sides. We are representing the AEBBA but as yet we have had no congratulations by the people who run this Association and find that quite shocking. :o I'm sorry to put a dampener on what was a truly memorable experience, one of which I was glad to be a part of. 8-) Keith >:( PS I feel much better now!! ;D
