Hi Sparky
I know where you could obtain some gaffa tape to affect a satisfactory repair! ;)

Thought this had been covered elsewhere but cannot find it
What I currently use for a 'D' is;
Workshop I use Milward iron on Repair Tape, thin and very flat after ironing. Difficult to find and you must make sure it is properly ironed on.
On-site repairs I use Filmoplast T Book Repair (bookbinding) tape cut out with a compass cutter or spots hole punched. This is very fine and has peel off backing and is far superior to gaffa tape. Plenty of this on Ebay.

Hi Sav
I have spent a morning looking for either tape, which I can find but not that would allow a 40mm radius D in one cut, best I have found is 35mm - is that an issue?
Sorry for the novice questions!

BTW I normally cut a 'D' directly from the tape edge and not a full circle. That's quite easy with a compass cutter, less so with a glass etc.

That's quite easy with a compass cutter, less so with a glass etc. Those compass cutters are the spawn of the devil and I would rather risk cutting off my finger with a long handled scalpel and the touch of a surgeon..... Tony PS I use Tesa Extra Power Multi Purpose Cloth Tape, Black 38 Mm X 2.75 M as recommended by Dave A but you have to cut them on the job as they have no backing tape - not exactly gaffer tape!

you have to cut them on the job as they have no backing tape - not exactly gaffer tape! That's the main bugbear in using duck tape, which does not have a peel-off backer. I save all my window envelopes and use the greaseproof window, but the tape has to be removed much more gingerly than the surround bit. If I want to do one quickly for home I put the tape straight onto an old ceramic tile. I might invest in some of Sav's suggested material, though, as he refurbished the table now in the Windmill for us and we're still on the original D.

Can't see the problem with compass cutters, I cut out twenty or so 'D's at a time. I use 'erself's chopping board.
Gaffa/duct tape's too soft , Tessa is better but thicker than mine and no backing.
Much easier on the road with the peel off backing, always have some with me in the rucksack of gear. Have a look at Sudbury this weekend.
I prefer the iron-on in the workshop as it flattens any imperfections in the cloth from old glue etc.
