Where else in the World ..........?

.............is bar billiards played that you know of ?

I shouldn't really encourage KP, and have no motive to undermine the competition known as the World Championships - quite the opposite in fact - but come on, who do you think could suddenly pop up one year representing a foreign country ?

Here are some possibilities.
France, Belgium - Sav often pops over there to pick up Billard Russe tables. Some people out there could have developed skills.

Russia - our game started off as Russian Billiards, but very unlikely.

Italy - there is the alternative game of bagatelle, popular in Italy, they also have a version of bar billiard table with the pockets much further down the table.

Spain - I believe a guy called Jim Baker took a couple of tables with him there back in the 1980s

Greece - our old friend Les Green, formerly of Kent and England.

Australia - a fine player called Chris Lewry emigrated there in the late 70s

Japan - me old mate Bob Mobsby emigrated to 'Oz' 25 years ago and thence on to Japan. He occasionally views into this site and is planning a visit back to these shores next year.

The U.S.A. - I learned recently that several hundred, maybe a thousand Jelkes tables were sold on there as antique furniture in the 80's by Bar Billiards Ltd.

Scotland - two possible candidates might swear an allegiance, being dormiciled there, temporary or otherwise.

Republic of Ireland - Gerry McCarthy, a very accomplished player from Sussex (a former County Champion) emigrated back there over ten years ago but shows up again here at the occasional Finals Night.

Jamaica - Mark James will confirm that there is a well-known film called The Harder They Come in which the reggae star Jimmy Cliff is quite clearly seen playing bar billiards !

Canada - I know of at least one table sold recently on eBay, destination Canada.

Singapore - again a revealation through eBay : a table was recently imported back from the BFPO there. Someone must have been playing on it !

Yes I've seen Jimmy Cliff playing bar billiards wearing a tea cosey. The game was apparently quite big in the West Indies

I've had dealings with people in Australia and Greg Dennis has just emigrated there.

I've seen it in France and Belgium obviously as "Billard Russe" in various guises. That's where it came from and I've a Billard Russe table to do up.

There was a 'championship' advertised in the Far East a few years ago, but we never did trace it.

Also I've first hand knowledge of tables in the US.

There were rumours of the game being played in Scandinavia and soe tables have gone to Spain.

It will be re-appearing in France next year with the new French Open ;D

That's about all I know of.

Pity we've no means of contacting a rich Arab oil sheikh who might become sold on the idea of buying "Table One" from the Kent Classic which you're about to advertise on eBay.
You never know your luck.......

Don't contact Roman Abramovich, though.......he'd want to buy up every table in sight and there'd be none left anywhere for us to play on. ;D

Fair point, it's prestige that counts. ;)

They play Bar Billiards in a remote place called Cambridge, it's in East Anglia ;)

I must admit that the Oxford folk are scared of them :D

I hear they also don't know how to play over there >:( ;D :D ;)

How about a county select team with me and you captains (to make sure we both play :D ). Home and away with the away team getting all 5 breaks ? (should find out if anyone wants to play first!) :-/

Everyone seems to want to play Oxford. Waiting to see if anything comes of the Morris Motors v Stadium (Hove, Sussex) challenge.

My county (Surrey) go one better, we play friendly Internationals:

Interesting that a person in Australia and one in Canada is looking to produce their own home-made table.

Won't be bar billiards as we know it, as no mention is made of obtaining slates.

Maybe someone aims to convert a broken-down pool table - which is how I would imagine the first 'Supreme' table came about.

Morning all, i hear from a very reliable source that there is a holiday resort in the cape verde islabds which has a table, i cant remember the name though unfortunately but hopefully thisll be a help :-). Provided it hasnt been announced on here at an earlier point.

All the dutch I have introduced it to (I'm a brit, having lived here 15 years) have fallen in love with the game, and would love to have the rare chance of competing on behalf of their country. Not that we're any good, but we love it and play every day.

so how about an orange team (with their enthusiastic followers) entering the World Cup..?

I would say you guys enter the world champs in November in jersey would be a great way for you guys to learn and probably suprise a few people and it's an excellent weekend
