Entries are now invited for the Watney Mann Cup, which is also the Sussex qualifying competition for the All-England Team Championship.
Teams are of 5 players, matches will be on a 2-leg home & away basis, and the winning team will represent Sussex at the national finals, which take place in Reading on Sunday, 21st October.
Each squad may include one guest player, providing that his/her own team has not also entered. If anyone is unsure of the rules, please phone me to discuss on my usual number (not published here) or PM me on this site.
Entry is FREE, to enter I simply need an email or PM from the team captain giving contact details, the name of the pub represented, and a full list of the squad players names.
Closing date for entries will be 31st March.

It would be nice if we could get some teams from North of the Downs. Mid Sussex or Horsham maybe!

It would be nice if we could get some teams from North of the Downs. Mid Sussex or Horsham maybe! We were discussing this on Wednesday with the likelihood of an entry from Handcross Social Club (as last year). All we have to do now is find someone to run it, as by that time we may no longer have a Q. Sparky maybe ?

A good evening in convivial company. Great to meet you for the first time, Pete and good to see again the "old RAFA Club lot" (Chris Scott, Terry Denyer, John Hayward etc) who always used to do so well in the Horsham Festival Cup - usually under a dubious title such as the P-Z's. ;) And Dave France and I concluded that a tie on Monday night in the Interleague would not be a particularly good result for either team. ;) ;D
Return leg at Handcross on 6th June (to be confirmed).

The Elms won the second leg of our Watney Mann fixture in style, going 3-0 up to add to the 3-2 advantage from their home leg.
Will have to record the scores on here tomorrow, margo has gone to bed and I don't particularly want to go rummaging through her handbag. ::)
Okay here is the full match report...............
Handcross SC 2, Elms 3
Sparky 2550, Vernon Blake 4010 Darrell Skinner 80, 'Hawaiian' Dave France 6320 IanG 1500, John Hayward 2910 tommo 6080, Chris Scott 3610 John Lear 3930, Ron Brewer 3620
Vernon with some very patient and precise play took the first against the break; Hawaiian Dave was 6k up after his second visit - Darrell toppling a peg having overtaken his opener, and later being denied a respectable score with a second and crueller white peg. The third was cut and thrust, and then with the match beyond all doubt the last two were cut and thrust also, Chris Scott playing the table out at the end with a nice 3k break.
Once again the Elms were very sociable and gracious in victory, so we wish them well in the closing stages of the competition. 8-)

Final score Elms 6 Handcross 4 Twas a good night Darrell was very unlucky to lose 2 scores on the peg. Tommo didn't mention his fine performance in the 4th to save Handcross from a good spanking backed up by Mr Lear in the 5th. Well done my team there's always next year. Good luck to the Elm's boys !!!! ;D ;D in next round. Ian. :)

Warren Club take their revenge for last year and inflict 5 - 0 defeat on the Windmill.
Excellent evenings entertainment capped with great food, just a shame the Windmill forgot how to play the game.
Game one. Barnie kicked of with just under 10k, leaving Bill K no chance, evetually running out the winner 10860-160. 1 - 0 Warren.
Game two. Rick C couldn`t get on with the break, and after coming of early left the game to Nick B. Nick ran out the winner 6190 - BP ( the BP coming as a relief to Rick.) 2 - 0.
Game three. Big tj on the break found it three times then missed the one up. Niel H got the break back and came of at about 2k, giving me a chance, break back same problem as Rick and never found the break again . Neil winning 6350 - 1040. 3 - 0.
Game four. Gary R against Arthur B. Gary established a good lead and Arthur didn`t get the break back till to late, but at leats showed one of us turned with some sort of thinking head. 6500 - 2670 4 - 0.
Game five. Both Steve A and Tony B struggled and battled Tony running out the winner 2640 - 1520 completing the 5 - 0 rout.
Well played the Warren, nice half time lead with the return being on Tuesday. Hopefully we will remember to try and give you a game.

Return leg of match between the Windmill and the Warren. Match played in a great spirit on a table set up a short notice in the public bar whilst re-decoration goes ahead in the saloon.
Game one. Bill Ks` break against Tony B. Bill started with just uner 2K. and then both players spent time casing the balls around. Evetually Bill got the break back and played out with over 5K. 9160 - 270 1 - 0 Windmill Warren lead 5 - 1 overall.
Game two. Saw Niel H on the break against Gina S. Niel made a steady 3.5k opener. Gina managed to get the break back, but broke down at 2k. Both players then had chances, but never relly amassed much on the break, Niel running out winner 6470 - 2700. 1 - 1 on the night, Warren tie up the match 6 - 2.
Well played the Warren, and good luck in the next round.
Game three. Barnie on the break against big TJ. Barnie winning 6100 - 2280, with Tj getting his chances but not taking them. 2 - 1 Warren.
Game four. By far and away the best game of the evening, Arthur B on the Break against Gary R. Artur opened with 1500, Gary replied with around 3k. After a bit of duelling and a couple of goes at the brea k Gary had built a 2k lead with time running out. Arthur played the table out to run out winner by 4970 - 5360. 2 -2.
Game five. Scrappy game with Nick Bs`break aganst Rick C. Both players had plenty of chances Nick winning 3160 - 2640.
Again thanks to the Warren, excellent company, good billiards. Thanks to the Windmill for putting themselves out to er-arrange the public bar to accomodate the game, and for the excellent fare at the end of the evening.

Return leg of the Brewery Tap v 3 Horshoes tie was played last night at the Tap. The Shoes needing at least a 3-2 win to equal the match or better.
Great match, worthy of the Final itself.
Marcus was drawn out 1st against Ian and broke off with just over 7k. Ian didn`t retrieve the break until it was to late.
1-0
As usual, Ricky & Gareth came out against each other, Ricky breaking off with about 2k, Gareth got them straight back but hit a split too thin and came off. Ricky then built a winning lead before touching on.
1-1
Geoff looked very smooth in the 3rd against Nigel, breaking off with 8k+, both players had a couple more gos before Nigel retrieved the break, and with enough time left (20 min clock), caught Geoff to win.
2-1
At this point things didn`t look good for the Shoes with Chris`s break to come against me. It`s really weird how the same players keep drawing each other, nominated or not. Chris kicked off with 8,600 and never looked like making a mistake but one happened. The balls were left quite kindly and i got the break back with 9 mins left, running the clock out for 10k.
2-2
Another 2 players that seem to meet all the time, Mal & Richard, set about the 5th and crucial game. If Mal won, it went to a decider between Nige & Kt, if Richard won then match over. Mal looked very good in racking up 8k before a wayward 20 split felled the left peg leaving Richard the straightforward task of a steady 5k before touching on.
Brewery Tap 3 Three Horseshoes 2
Aggregate 6 - 4
Great match, was looking forward to setting Nige a biggy in the last :( ;)
Good luck to the Tap for the rest of the competition.

Fantastic see-sawing match from the sound of it.
That's the trouble though when you get ten great players playing on the night, you know that everyone can score heavily, but that in all likelihood the match will be lost on a slight error of judgment on someone's part.
Unlucky the Horseshoes, and now for the Tap the quest continues to earn their chance for revenge on Oxford for last year !

It was a great match last night. Especially well done to Marcus who won a very crucial opening game.
An 11th game decider between me and KT may have been a fitting climax as both us overcame big defecits to win our games, and both of us won 2 legs against the break in the tie. However it was a relief to see Richard make the score 6-4, as I think I may have been chasing a biggie to win the match!
