Peter,
I echo the remarks made by Clive, and wish you all the very best for the future, and I can say that it has been a pleasure to know you, and also to play against you in open competition, and the Alternate rules as well. You have always come out on top against me, but that means that I have to improve to get to the level you have set. I to have other things in my life, so I hope that maybe one day our paths will cross again, and i would also like the pleasure of buying you a drink. Best wishes to you and your lady for everything that comes your way.

I came over to the island on Monday 20th for a 4 day break, and enjoyed a pleasant time, also meeting up with some old friends made over a few years of playing in the World Championships. I would like to thank Gill and Harry Barbet for the hospitality and offer of a lift to the Union Inn on Wednesday 18th, for the D1 Cup Final. and congratulate the Trinity Arms team for their win

Just to let everybody know that the agreement that currnetly exists between the UK, and Jersey ends on March 31st this year. What that means is that if you need medical treatment whilst in Jersey, you will have to pay for it, UNLESS you have adequate travel insurance. The same applies to those from Jersey coming over to the mainland. I don't know if the situation is the same for Guernsey.

If there are players in and around oxford who do not, or cannot get into a team, why do they not get together to form more teams, and boost up the players, and matches. We hear so much of how the game is contracting because of players leaving for one reason or another, so this is surely a chance for a league to cultivate the non-playing talent that is around. Maybe the players concerned do not live close enough to each other to form a team, but surely they could consider it.

Maybe if somebody sent them a picture of a proper bar billiard table they could re-show it, with what we know as a table, rather than the excuse for it produced across the water. You never know, maybe, just maybe people might have a look.

Chris
Thanks for putting the tribute to a fine gentleman, and a good bar billiard player, who so sadly has left us. We here in Medway all have our memories of him, and I personally knew him for almost 40 years. The attendance at the funeral wes very good both with friends and bar billiard players alike

DIVISION 3 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
With the unfortunate withdrawal of Surrey B at a late stage the D3 County championship, the title was to be contested between Kent B, and Berkshire B. Kent started with a rush on the day, winning the first series of games by 7 - 0, and it was a repeat in the second series as well, with Kent again prevailing by 7 - 0. Berkshire were obviously more than a little shell shocked at this, and never recovered from the very slow start they had. The 3rd series of games started with Kent only needing 1 leg to clinch the title, but Berkshire did win the 1st game on the series, but the title was clinched for Kent by the oldest player there on the day, Gerry Goodwin, who is well known for his doggedness and determination within the Medway area where he has played for many years. After the title had been won, the Kent players then expressed themselves as would be expected, with confidence, and good scores and breaks when given the opportuinty. Both John Addley , Martin Russell, and Martin Leach and good breaks of 6K, and 8K during the day, with the high break eventually going to Martin Leach with 8260. A good day was had by all, well organised by Dave Alder, and the competition ran almost on time for the whole day.
On the Ladies Competition, only 6 Ladies participated due to the late withdrawal of Kent's Jackie Peckham, and so it was decided that the Ladies would all play each other once, with each game of 2 legs, with 2 points for the win only. After 5 rounds of matches had been played, with 2 Ladies having completed all the games, it was down to Chris Toner, to score more than 6,000 over her 2 leg match to win the title, from Jean Brackenridge, who had completed her series of games. Jean had scored in excess of 40,000 in the 5 games played, and had set a high standard for the other Ladies to beat, but Chris was not to be denied, taking the first leg of her last match with a score in excess of the 6,000 she needed to overtake Jean. With the job done, Chris relaxed in her second leg and just enjoyed the moment, knowing that she was champion for 2008.
The ladies high break prize went to Pauline Withey, for her break of just over 4K. Jean again being the Runner up.
The highlight of the day however is not the bar billiards although that was the important thing.
The HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY IS :-
CHRIS NEWSOME DRINKING
ORANGE JUICE
I have sent the imcriminating evidence to Nigel, who I hope will post it up on the forum for all to witness.
This obvious misdemeanour will probably never be repeated, as Chris will endeavour to put all the records straight about this.

The main questions I have, as I am waiting for conformation from various players, which should happen tonight, is :-
1 How many games will be involved between Kent and Berkshire 2 Will the winners of this reduced competition be promoted to D2

Good for you Johnny to go to represent Cambridge. This is a way of having your skills shown to the players at the very top on the tree, and maybe the stepping stone to you eventually managing to represent England.
Best of luck for the day.

Correct about Sue Barker Chris, but we have not had a decent lady player for more years than most of us care to remember, so that is why we ( mainly ) look at the men who play, and I still think that Murray will not win a major championship. I just wish that all the commentators and pundits would get their facts right when they talk about Grand Slams. The Grand Slam, ( last achieved by the great Rod Laver in 1969 ) is the winning of all 4 of the accepted major tennis tournaments in the calender year ( IE starting in January and finishing in December ), and not the winning of 1 or 2 majors. Although I will accept that tennis has moved on to far greater heights than the rocket ever played at, a win at the Australian, French, Wimbledon, or the US Open is a MAJOR, not a Grand Slam. Getting all 4 In a calender year is a Grand Slam. Three players now have come close to achieving that feat in the modern game, with Rafael Nadal being the latest to add 2 or more major titles in a year, with the other 2 players being Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer.

Two others also reached the dizzy heights of the number 4 player in the world, and also 1 of those 2 also came runner-up in the 1997 US Open final. They got no higher, or indeed won a major championship in their careers, and I don't expect Andy Murray to be any different from those 2 players either.

Thanks Peter, and the announcement was made at the Kent Classic by Pete Sainsbury, after all the presentations had taken place. I know that you had gone, so the news had not filtered through yet. I still have a couple of meetings left to fulfil over here, One being the K.B.B.A. A.G.M. of which I am chairman, until the end of the meeting, and the other is the C.B.B.L. A.G.M., of which I am president. Both offices I hold will be vacated by me, and a replacement found ( hopefully ).

As most of you are aware, my time in the UK is fast approaching the last whistle. No, I have no intention ( not yet anyway ) of passing away, just leaving for other shores within the European Union. I spoke to a lot of friends at the Kent Classic and told of my departure, and I had hoped that I would have been going over this coming week-end. However, things don't always go as one expects, and this is no exception, so my departure has been delayed by about 5 - 6 weeks. When I have a fixed date on which I will be going, then I will put another post here, so as to wish everybody a fond farewell, and good luck. I am hopeful that I will come over to Jersey in the near future, but I will be back in the UK twice a year ( at least ), to visit both my parents, once at christmas ( my father died 27th Dec ), and again in April ( my mother died 22nd ), so maybe I can get round to see a few people while I am here. In the mean time, Best wishes to all for the coming season whenever your league may start.

I also add my congratulations to Kevin for the win at the Kent Classic, and commiserations to Nigel. I had the pleasure of scoring the final, as I had for the last 2 years, and the standard of play seems to get better every year. It goes to show the rest of the players how the very best play on a top that was not as easy as they made it out to be, as those that had played on that table will testify. That is in no way a critisism of any of the tables that was played on yesterday, just shows that the very best are capable of adapting to a situation quicker than most. I would also like to thank everybody who spoke to me after the presentations were over and wished me all the very best as I am about to move away to another country, ( if all goes well ) hopefully within the next 4 - 6 months. The best wishes I received will always bring fond memories of good friendships that have been made through the game we all enjoy. I will not embaress anybody in particular, but suffice to say to every-one
THANK YOU ONE AND ALL
Dave
