Thanks Tommo, yes it is today as opposed to the American way of putting dates, and now I only have 12 months to go before the pension arrives.

In addition to the Watney Mann champions matches, was the Freddie Trueman's Indoor League champion of Champions Matches.
I have the 1976 results, along with the names of those players who took part, and I know that Peter Ferelly also re-produced the details in the ( sadly now defunct ) BBQ.
If anybody know the whereabouts of the following players, maybe they can relate a tale or two to be put on here.
the names of the 16 Players are:-
Roy Buckle, J Peters, Gerry Lambert, Tony Mayhead, Alan Sales, Alan Ignatowski, Tony Sculley, Rod Tarratt, Lawrence Brown, Stanley Pratt ( Medway ), Charles Hastie, Michael Samwell, John Thayre, Brian Paul, Christine Cole, Vivien Shepherd.
I cannot remember the rules that the players had to play under, but the winner of that particular competition was:-
Stanley Pratt ( Medway ) beating Gerry Lambert in the final.
Scores were Stan Pratt 3890 Gerry Lambert 2180
i know that this was in the BBQ, but I also know that there are quite a few people who come on this forum who never received or read the BBQ, so that is why I have put this here.

Always be on the look-out for the proverbial Dark Horse in any competition, and if you look at the " Group of Death " with Italy, Holland, France and Romania, do not discount the outsiders in this group. I fancy that Romania could cause an upset, escecially if they get a result against the Dutch.
If I had to choose the eventual winner, then I to go for the Portugese.

I to offer my thanks to those who have taken the time to report on a occasion. I have posted a photograph on Facebook, ( where there is a tribute to Ray ), the Photo I took at the Grand prix last year which has the top 16 players of the year. Ray is the only one that is pointed out, although I am sure that those of you who look at it will know who you are. Dave May

From here in the C.B.B.L. here in Medway in Kent, may I say, as President of our League that this is truly news indeed. I had the pleasure and privilage of playing Ray a couple of times in the Open competitions that I went to, and that Ray was a true sportsman, and GENTLEMAN. From all of us in the Medway area, we send our deepest sympathy to Ray's family, friends, and Bar Billiard collegues. All our thoughts are with all of you at this, the saddest of times. Dave May K.B.B.A Chairman, and C.B.B.L President

The City Bar Billiard League here in Medway was formed in 1947, and at it's height had 4 leagues with 18 teams in each league. We are now playing with 10 teams, but still going and we have 2 players recently retired, and 1 player still active who have played for 50 seasons in our League.

Some people may say that the " split " / " oxford " is and can make the game boring, but I remember a couple of years ago at the Kent Classic, the semi-final between Keith Sheard, and Kevin Tunstall, where Keith ran the table for a score of 20200. This is on an Open championship table where the timings are very accurate to 17 mins, ( give or take 5 secs ). Kevin promptly set about the task of catching that score, and Keith was standing about 5 feet from where I was with other Medway players. I commented ( very quietly ) that I did not think KT had started quickly enough, but Keith had heard me, and, with only about 1 minute played said that as long as Kevin caried on at the pace he was playing, he ( Keith ) had lost, as this was the quickest he had ever seen Kevin start. True to his words, Keith lost that match, and 5 mins after running out the table in the semi-final for a winning 21750, he ran the 1st leg of the final against Barry Holt for just over 19500. It was a wonderful feat of:-
1 Great ability and skill, and 2 Wonderful concentration
To be able to do that sort of play under that sort of pressure is a target that all of should aspire to, but hardly any of us achieve. To remove any particular shot from anybodies reportoire, I think would be a shame, and a slur on those who have achieved the pinnacle of the game, by winning against the best in Open and World Championship play.

I will have to listen to this " Everlasting Love " by Jamie Cullum, as I have never heard a cow with bellyache sing.

There is still a league going in Maidstone, but for how much longer is very debatable. We here in the Medway league offered them amalgamation with us on more than 1 occasion, the last offering being within the last 6 months. They have at this moment in time declined the offer, as, in the words of one of the players, " we are not to keen to travel to Medway, as it is to far ". The distance between the two areas is less than 10 miles, and the furthest a team would have to travel from the Maidstone leageu as it is now, would be in the region of 25 miles round trip, and that is from Sutton Valence, which is about 5 - 6 miles from Maidstone. At this time as far as I am aware, there is only 3 venues left, with 5 teams playing, so the future does not look very good for this league. It is also worth mentioning that they are not affiliated to the K.B.B.A. any longer, as they say that it is no longer affordable. It looks like the situation here in the garden of England will go from 4 leagues, down to 3 in the very near future.

Thetable listed in the Medway area does not form part of our League structure, as the venue in Question lost the team that played there some 5 years ago, and also has changed hands since that time. I, as president of the CBBL ( MA ), wrote to the venue some 6 months ago, informing the licencee that our league was still a going concern, and as yet had no reply to my letter, and also no phone call from the venue either. On that basis, I can only presume that :-
1, The landlord / manager has no interest in getting a team or 2 The ex-players who maybe still use the venue are no longer interested in playing the game.
The CBBL ( MA ) is still going ( although not that strong ) with, at this time 10 teams although what the future holds after this season is anybodies guess. I think we will continue next year but with how many teams, and for how long. We do not have any " young blood " coming into the game down here.

Interesting link by Lord Cheeky, and this maybe, just maybe, a way out of the empasse that BB ltd have put us in. All bar billiard players and venues should at laest have a look at this potential outlet for tables, and possible rental agreements.
