May I ask, when are the Rankings & Grand Prix points going to be updated on the All England site??
The Ladies have some points for 2008, but the Men have none!!
Also, their is nothing on for the Sussex Open yet!
Or am I being too impatient. ???
Keith.

Hi Keith,
Hands up here on part of it. I've just checked my inbox and found that Nigel sent me an update after Guernsey that I have missed. I have been extremely busy with various responsibilities this year and have struggled to keep up. My apologies for my inefficiency.
Please remember though that Nigel is no longer the Tournament Director and is only maintaining the rankings out of goodwill.
Our national association remains seemingly oblivious to what is happening in the game and has remained completely silent through the biggest crisis the game has ever seen.
Any help, communication and guidance has come through this forum. I had a couple of calls as webmaster and forum co-owner from Dave Alder, but absolutely no leadership from AEBBA as an official body has been evident.
It was the same when my competition tables were set up. I offered them to AEBBA prior to Brian Daniel's intervention, to form a non profit making county consortium. Sadly now the best and only set of genuine competition tables are now history. They were actually reserved for last year's home international but the organizers never had the courtesy to tell me they had decided to go with Brian's.
We went almost twenty years running national competitions without a rule book. There have been no accounts circulated for over 18 months.
AEBBA are supposed to be leading this game!
We will do our best on the forum to keep things moving, but none of the forum officers are AEBBA officers and in any way responsible for leading and organizing our wonderful game. Those willing to help here are all too often stretched very thinly at times.
I realize that all AEBBA officers are also volunteers, but I have to ask - What actual use is AEBBA??
Sav. (These are my personal feelings and in no way represent the forum owners and officers as a whole.)

Certain people with a long association with running the game - such as yourself, Sav - have been too overly pro-active on the AEBBA's behalf: and therein lies the problem: the Association haven't needed to do too much.
I agree with the charge levelled, that more of a lead should have been taken over the withdrawal of services of the main table operator in the UK - but here again, the situation (not without the enormous effort of a few people unassociated with AEBBA) as if by magic seemed to resolve itself !

Chicken and egg Clive!!

I agree in the short term but have considerable reservations in the long term, now that the principal reservoir of Jelkes tables has gone.!!

Sav, I feel it very unfair that Brians name is brought into this, the question was about the rankings.
You were not at the AGM in question when Brian said about buying the tables, and when he said about buying the GENUINE COMPETITION TABLES THAT ARE USED, AND HAVE BEEN USED FOR MANY YEARS SUPPLIED BY BAR BILLIARDS LTD, he did so in effort to save the game, not to get his name used in vain!

Hi, Sorry if there is any missunderstanding. No criticism is implied of you, Brian or Tony. I do not see where I have criticized you. You have my utmost respect for buying the Bar Billiards Ltd tables. It should not have come to individuals such as you and I trying to bail out the game. If there is further missunderstanding between us please see me on Sunday. My disappointment is purely with the lack of any action from AEBBA throughout the crisis that has faced us over the last four years. Ken Hussey will tell you I foresaw and raised this subject with him long before any of this happened. Keith correctly raised the point over the lack of stats. I apologised for my own shortcomings as maintainer of the site I set up and paid for in the name of AEBBA, but pointed out that we are not a part of the AEBBA exec who are responsible for maintaining these stats and the game in general. That leadership is missing. Chris.

If I dare just make the point that the AEBBA were never ever responsible for maintaining the rankings. I personally initiated them as part of the BBQ in 1990 and they were never advertised by me as anything more than my own little bit of fun as everyone knows. I became an executive member of the AEBBA later, and the job of tournament director was always kept very separate from maintaining the rankings, and it was pure coincidence that both jobs were carried out by me. My hon successor as TD, I believe, offered to continue to maintain the rankings when the TD job became too difficult for him to continue.
Apologies if this is not 100% true as I have not taken any interest in this subject recently, and I cannot remember the last time that I visited the AEBBA website. But the situation may have been improved if, as I requested, the rankings had stayed "unofficial".
I do, however, agree that leadership has not been very forthcoming from the current committee, since the retirements and resignations of long-standing members in recent years.
So what does that tell us?

Isn't that what the forum is for? Not just to swap results, and gain vitally important general knowledge about windmills and antelopes, but to ask searching questions. And expect fair and acceptable replies, and opinions from interested (and disinterested) people.

Not knocking you, Pete, but just observing that Keith asked a simple question, yet we now have three separate issues being debated on the one thread. >:(

In reponse to Keith's question, I do have everything up to date with regards to results, rankings and Grand Prix lists. I have not sent Sav the Sussex Open results but will do so along with the Kent after this weekend.
So fret not Keith, we will get there, perhaps we spoilt you last year with having everything up so quickly, and there are going to be times when myself and Sav are busy with other things, but I assure you it is all in hand.
It is also good to know that some of you are keeping an eye on the AEBBA website looking out for these things

Thanks Chris & Nigel, for updating all the Rankings, I knew it wouldn’t take you long to react to my question.
The only problem is that each time you update them I seem to drop down a position and who is that at No 3 that has leapfrogged over me?……How dare he!!
At least I can say that I am the oldest person in the top ten and one of only a few that have been No 1 in the rankings……Who can name the others?
Chris, you are doing a great job in keeping this forum going and also Nigel for taking the time to keep all the statistics from all the tournaments and working out the ranking points, so all of us can see a list of the National Rankings and Grand Prix positions, even though you are no longer Tournament Director for the AEBBA.
As far as I’m concerned, this forum is the best thing that has happened in Bar Billiards.
So please keep the good work up, as it is much appreciated.
Keith.

Thanks for the kind comments Keith, but don't forget Sparky. He does a lot of work covering my back on the forum admin in the background when I am snowed under.
Re the rankings, you've taken my place as the oldest git in the top ten ;D ;D The next set of results will see me drop out of the top twenty, surprisingly it as taken 18 months since I 'retired'!!

Great work as ever, Nigel and Chris.
Sorry to have to point out one little error (but at least it shows some of as are appreciative enough to read this stuff !): You have John Addley down as played twice in round one of the Bucks Plate. It must have been somebody else who played Dave France at this stage, as they met later on in the SemiFinal of the same competition.
Hope it's not too difficult to amend !

Chers guys,
Thanks for spotting that Tommo, Dave France played Syl Murphy in Round 1 of the plate not John Addley, I will ask Sav to correct that.
Also the latest Grand Prix standings are on the site, with just Berks, Special Ladies, and Jersey left for players to make the top 16.

What is the Special Ladies still to go please and when is it??? Chris, the date is as per Sav's link, it is a competition open to all ladies and carries Grand Prix points as well as ladies ranking points. Disappointing numbers of entries in recent years (only about 13 last year). Please let dave Alder know if you want to play.

Chris, on the A.E.B.B.A site you have Jan Taylor down for the Highest break in the Ladies Singles, it should be Pauline Withey 5,890.
Jan was not even there. ::)

- full transcript of County Championships
- rankings as at October 2008
Great that these are being kept up to date. Can you tell me the trick on how to get these to print out easily, though ? Rankings come off nicely at the single press of a button, however the Opens etc take about an hour of print resetting, resizing, cancelling print range, changing to A3, tearing up blank page, setting back to A4, cutting and pasting, sellotaping, wailing and gnashing of teeth, banging head against brick wall - and still no success ! :o :o ;D
