We've had beer/cider recommendations, so why not wine also ? (That doesn't last long in the tommo household either !)
Top three in reverse order, based on Sainsbury's 3 bottles for £12 (mix n' match):
3.Woolemi (Australian Chardonnay)
2.Le Pont St Jean (vin de France)
1.San Pedro 35 South Latitude (Semillon Chardonnay, Chile)

Strange Tommo how you often come up with the same as me!!
I'm having a quiet evening doing some PC work with a plate of vintage cheddar and smoked cheddar I buy direct fron Greens of Glatonbury cheesemakers, the finest 'tongue tingling' traditional strong cheddar I have found, accompanied by a glass of 2004 Chateau Le Meynot, a full bodied St. Emillion that is man enough to compliment the cheese.
It's a hard life now I've retired ;D ;D

Tommo no I've not been to a cheese festival. If you like a genuinely strong cheddar, tangier than you will find in any supermarket I can recommend the Greens vintage and it's cheaper than you'll pay for mature in a supermarket. I order 15kgs at a time!! for several around here. Most modern cheddars are made in a creamery and are not a patch on the taste of a traditional cheddar. Sav

I do prefer the taste of a mature cheddar. Interesting link here to Wookey Hole Caves which we visited in 2009 and saw the cheeses which had been left to mature at the ideal constant all-year-round temperature of 11deg.C: www.wookey.co.uk/cave-aged-cheese/

You can't beat a Margaux in my opinion. That's as maybe, can't argue with that! ;D The other cheapo we're into at the moment is Echo Falls (Californian white). Light and fruity.

Decent Rioja or Ribero del Duero is some of the finest in the world and much more approachable.... Bacchus and I go there every year ;D BTW Denominacion de Origen Calificada is just the classification of quality by the Spanish government not the region it comes from. Like Appelation d'origine controlee in France ::) cheers Tony

After a home-visit tasting I subscribed to a case of Argentinian 'Misty Peak' which is really full of flavour. 8-)

I thought Paul Sainsbury would take the bait, fully expecting K.T. to weigh in too. Could be getting some recommendations from Bacchus too - he is after all the god of wine. :D

Tonight I have a 2009 La Multa old vine tempranillo, calatayud.
It says that it's a rich and full bodied red, made from old vine tempranillo grapes and is from the continental climate of calatayud (Denominacion de origin) in north east spain, also boasts that it goes well with cheese, (we shall see as I have a piece of nice strong white cheese, that smells lovely :-/) and at 14% vol should ensure that I sleep through the night ;) 8-)

If you buy 2 bottles it goes down to 80 quid anyway. I had half a bottle of Torres Iberico rioja last night. Lovely stuff for 7 to 9 pounds. Tony

Wouldn't say no to a nice glass of Rioja, am quite partial to Argentinian Malbec at the moment as well.
In fact, come to think of it if it's red I'll probably drink it! :-*

Yes, I like the Hardy's brand too. For a white, the VR is a good low-budget buy...peach and melon bouquet. Margo and I have just finished a bottle of Cape Nelson Semillon Chardonnay Breedekloof (South African)...peach and apricot. Very more-ish. ;)
