Don't know about you lot, but how about an intercounty 4 pin comp, wonder how many counties could get 5 or 7 players together to battle it out, perhaps to follow the next 4 pin open. Any one interested?

I think this definitely has a place in the future. But more fitting is the Norfolk v Suffolk challenge which was being mooted last year.
Let's see if that one ever gets off the ground, and if it does, then a challenge from south of the Thames could emanate!

A friendly match was arranged between The Bay Horse Sudbury and The Ashburnham Hastings
The first match was at the bay Horse on Sat 9th Aug
The trip up was bit tedious , about 3 hours 20 to get there with heavy traffic particularly at Dartford, but we all got there roughly on time.
The hosts allowed us to have a quick practice, which was very useful as we found the 1 up shot was approx. the same on narrow and normal tables, we had a flirtation with cutting the red into the 50 off the side which was on but was a low percentage shot. It was agreed to take 6 players, we would draw names for order of play when all had been played the game would be allocated on score so that the best would play the best and so on, of course Sudbury rules would apply so it was toss for break all through.
Result card as follows
Alistaire Carnegie 1660 v 2650 Colin Southouse Steve Hale 570 v 1630 Phil Osborne Brenden Hoare 1880 v 930 Mike Reilly Jeremy Fry 1390 v 1490 Chris Haynes (last ball Winner) Dave Lilie 1990 v 2490 Bob Osborne Jason Lawrence 1740 v 2190 Peter Payne(last ball red Winner)
so after round one The Ashburnham were 5-1 up but The Bay horse were not down and out yet
Great nibbles were provided by the Pub at the interval
Steve Hale 3180 v 1010 Mike Reilly Jeremy Fry 1900 v 1640 Chris Haynes Alistaire Carnegie 1580 v 1380 Phil Osborne Jason Lawrence BP v 2300 Peter Payne (another close match on the last ball) Brenden Hoare 1050 v 1640 Bob Osborne Dave Lillie 410 v 2210 Colin Southouse
so after round 2 The scores were even 3-3 leaving the Ashburnham 8-4 up on aggregate
A doubles practice game followed with plenty of interesting shots and attempted shots transpired
Many thanks to our hosts, twas a great days narrow 4 pin, and was a sharp learning curve on shots with All pockets in a slightly different positions and great fun as ever with 4 pin. Hopefully other teams/players may try up this version of the game.
Looking forward to the return, we may also look at forming a 5 pin version but that's for later, also had an interesting discussion on the current rules, we will see if anything is taken on board.

Members of the Bay Horse took on representative teams from old Eastbourne and Hastings today at the Ashburnham
Dave Lillie bought a 7 man team down from Sudbury and a couple of old faces in the form of Sav who came over by train and Tommo who bought over some Horsham 4 pin trophies from their summer league.
After a few last minute adjustments due to babies and illness all was ready, with spots and mushrooms on a table that had never before had them so festooned, There were several pretty inexperienced players on show who were willing to have a go and thanks to them for their support today.
As previously we gave our guests the opportunity to have a couple of practice games to ensure that they were familiar with the table
We decided that we would alter the rules to double break as the Bay horse were playing 2 games to our 1, it seemed the right thing to do.
Result card for Eastbourne v Bay Horse Sudbury
Chris Haynes 3030 v 2060 Alisdaire Carnegie Mike Reilly 1540 v 3260 Colin Norledge Peter Payne 3360 v 2830 Chris Saville Stewart Chant 1850 v 1990 Steve Hale Colin Southouse 4010 v 1230 Jeremy Fry Dave White 1920 v 1310 Dave Lillie Clive Thompson 2630 v 2340 Jason Laurence
Result Eastbourne Won 5-2
Result card for Hastings v Bay Horse
Phil Osborne 3230 v 1600 Chris Saville Sandy Harmer 2000 v bp Alisdaire Carnegie Fred Pope 1180 v 2520 Colin Norledge Mike Daw 1820 v 1260 Dave Lillie Roy Harmer 920 v 3590 Jeremy Fry Bob Osborne 3100 v 3140 Steve Hale Peter Payne 3360 v 1300 Jason Laurence
Result Hastings win 4-3
Another great day of 4 pin looks like there will be a repeat home and away next year, already looking forward to it.
Today's notable breaks Chris Haynes 2000 Peter Payne 1940 Phil Osborne 1330 Colin Norledge 1230 Colin Southouse 1200

The magnetic pull of the 4-Pin Eastbourne v Sudbury challenge proved too much for tommo to resist, and to his own surprise he found himself heading south and east on a sunny Saturday afternoon ! Highlights of the journey were the vastly-improved stretch of the A23 now opened (3 lanes all the way down to Bolney without the horrible speed restrictions) and Hastings seafront with its regency architecture, the sun to my right reflecting off the gentle waves. First face I saw when entering the Ashburnham was Mr Sav, who had been drafted in as Sudbury's 'ringer' so any qualms I may have had over guesting for the Eastern half of the county were removed when I was asked to fill in for Gareth Dell (on paternal duties). A most enjoyable event ensued in a relaxed and sporting atmosphere, with plenty of banter from either side. The two 'ringers' managed both the unluckiest and the luckiest shot of the day between us: Sav did an 'up and back' to the right hand 50 which he seemed to have judged perfectly, but as the cue ball followed the object ball in it just ringed the pocket taking a mushroom. Tommo's fortuitous effect was straight out of John Turner's top drawer, a double kiss off the side cush which hurled the red ball straight down for 400 ! Anyway, glad I made the effort, and I look forward to meeting up with the Sudbury and Eastbourne/Hastings lads again next March. Happy birthday to Daveuk1 for Monday !

I'm just glad Colin kept a record of the scores as after about 3pm I don't really remember too much untill silly hours on Sunday moorning when our Colin woke me up because I was asleep on the floor outside my hotel room.
It was a great day enjoyed by all and as always the for us Sudbury lads the result came second place to the beer drinking.
A great big thank you to Sav and Tommo for coming along and a special thanks to Colin for organising the day and arranging for the sun to shine although he did slip up with the weather on Sunday.
As Tommo has already said, hopefully most of us will meet up again in March in Sudbury for the EA open and I'm sure a date will be set then for next years Hastings/ Eastbourne/ Sudbury bash.
Dave
