And you knocked one of them out in the last Open too, or had you forgotten????!!!!???? But, you know it does not work like that, you naughty boy. The Oxford A team is the same as last year, but I hear there will at least one vacancy next year. The B team is a different proposition and I have already said that you SHOULD have been in that. In fact, you definitely should OF!!! I didn't want to remind you of that mate ;) :) Maybe next year after i have beaten a couple more county players :-/

If anyone is au fait with the new sizes etc., how much for an envelope 380mm x 250mm weighing 135gms? That could save me 30 mins in the PO queue. As you know I'm a Sub Post Master, I'll assume we're still divorced :'( :'( But to answer your question 100g - 250g large letter (BBQ unfolded A4) is 55p Sav.

Yes, I did know and hoped you would help out. So now, if anyone has to pay extra at the door, they know who to blame! ;D Cheers Chris. Now Peggy will not have to queue up at "the snake" this morning. Oh, bu...r, yes she will, unless anyone has 50 odd 55p stamps to send me ;D

I`m in agreement with you Pete. Millhouse should definitely have been in the B side and as for Phil Collins only being reserve, as Victor Meldrew would say " I can`t believe it" ! One of the most exciting young players around, he wouldn`t have been out of place in the A side. I agree with the majority of the A team selections and i`m sure those selected will give Sussex a run for their money, but i`m at a loss to see Leon Beers` name missing again. The selection criteria for the County side has always been based around the Inter Area teams and as Leon has been part of the all conquering Wallingford A side for several years, i can`t understand his exclusion. There are only a couple of current players in the County side to have actually won the Oxon County singles. Leon won this 2 years ago and still didn`t get selected last year, let alone this. He was a beaten finalist in the Berkshire open in 2003. He was part of the 2003 County side winning 3/4 and the 2004 side winning 2/4 and yet he was dropped the next year. Why? Although he hasn`t gone further than the last 16 in any Individual opens this year, he has played every one and won 16 matches along the way, beating Gareth Lloyd(Mermaid winner),Paul Sainsbury,Richard Wooton & Steven Sheard to name but a few of those. He and his partner Phil Collins also reached the last 16 of the Open pairs, losing to K.Sheard/R.Sturgess. Would it have made any difference if there had been a Wallingford representative at the selection meeting? Sadly it will be my last County champs for Oxon, but i am looking forward to Captaining the side for the last time, then next year, hopefully, i will qualify for the Sussex team. I was asked on Sunday, "if you are in a position in the last match to relegate Sussex, what would you do"? Silll question really, I always play to win !

Simple question, then, Kevin :
Do you agree that there should be an official National ranking list ?
(If only to add weight to any arguments about whether players are good enough to be considered for their county.......)

Yes, but i wouldn`t change Fazzas system. I think it is the most accurate way of finding out recent & current form. I already posted my votes on the other thread, my only doubts were the Internationals and Grand Prix ranking points. I don`t think they should get full ranking points.

I agree with you, KT, that Pete's system is almost spot-on and I would support any move to make it official. I haven't had a chance to read the latest BBQ as mine will have to come by post, but have a fair idea of the content of his editorial and he has a point.
But IMHO we need a system and we need it to be official.
Many of us suffer from the seemingly arbitrary way in which our counties select players for the Nationals: I appear to be the latest casualty in this - won 3/4 last year for Surrey, have since shown plenty of interest by entering Opens etc, yet won't be getting a repeat invitation this year.
It can be a question of who you know, if your face fits, etc etc and no wonder there's a lot of opposition to National team events counting for ranking points when the door is closed to many in the first place.
If something official were put in place, accessible to view on the AEBBA website, and which we all agreed gave a fair reflection of current performances and ability, there would be very little room for argument.

Kevin, I agree with your comment regarding Leons exclusion from the County A team, but saying that, the only player who had a dissapointing County last year was John B, who lost 3/4. But we have a 'B' Team this year, so i think the only reason i would drop anyone from the 'A side' was if they were not playing well and as far as i know everyone is. As for Millhouse being in the County 'B' team, i can think of one or two players that i would pick over him for this year, especially as he only made the 'B' side of Eynsham in the Inter Area & was not even in the Inter Area 7 a sides. His day will come I'm sure.
To defend the selection commitee though, there were no Oxford or Wallingford (the two biggest local leagues) commitee members present !!!.

Just trying to get back to the subject in question, although it was, as usual, my fault that it drifted away:
Clive: your BBQ is with Bernie. He said that he would be seeing you. Hope you have it by now.
Chris: Although your info was (undoubtedly) accurate, reading it again I realise it was not the answer to the question I asked. I gave measurements of 380x250, which must be greater than the usual A4 size (330x230). Poor Peggy queued up with Lorin's BBQ under her arm, asked if 55p was enough (and was that first or second class). NO, NO, £1.09 was the reply. I had asked her to get 29 equivalent stamps to send out those not likely to be at the County Championships so she came away with spending £32.70, instead of £16.50.
Rip off???? Surely!!!!!
But at least Lorin should have his copy by tomorrow.
And I am now going to try to find some smaller envelopes and swap the stamps for cheaper ones. What a pain!!! And then I will indeed try to take the bread out of their mouths, and whiskey from their hip flasks too.
>:( Angry? Seething..

What a pain!!! And then I will indeed try to take the bread out of their mouths, and whiskey from their hip flasks too. >:( Angry? Seething.. Sounds fairly typical of the attitude the poor sub postmaster is encountering, we don't make the rules, we just suffer the abuse and have to pay for the mistakes we make after we've been upset. My pay for all that knowledge and responsibilty??? works out about £4.50 an hour. Re your envelopes, I'm suprised they did not go through the large letter slot. All you need to do fold the excess over and selotape the flap down. Sav.

It is OK, I've found some real A4 envelopes, and will use those. But will need to change the stamps, though!

Thanks Pete, Won't be seeing Bernie for a while as I've recently defected from his Interleague team (and am probably know known as "Judas"). But hopefully he will leave it behind the bar for me at the Handcross Club and I'll be able to pick it up next week. Cheers, tommo.

Re postage, just occurred to me, the large letter limit is a full two inches wider than A4, what ere you posting them in?? papachutes?? Given that size limits are now in force I would have thought it common sense to use as small an envelope as possible (or perhaps not in this case ;D).
Other thought if I am wrong is to put the narrow side though the Post Office slot might work ;D
Hope this helps.
Chris.

I did say that the envelope size I normally use is 380x250 whereas I think normal A4 is 330x230.

And, to get back on track again, you naughty naughty boys need a good spanking...... Re postage, just occurred to me, the large letter limit is a full two inches wider than A4, what ere you posting them in?? papachutes?? Given that size limits are now in force I would have thought it common sense to use as small an envelope as possible (or perhaps not in this case ;D). Other thought if I am wrong is to put the narrow side though the Post Office slot might work ;D Hope this helps. Chris. Yes, it does help now that I am using smaller A4 envelopes which is why I quoted the size to you in the first place ;) I do not wish to be "unduly" nasty here but... I must just publicly thank the stupid, craggy-faced old jobsworth sourpuss in our PO this morning for her assistance in this matter. I queued up with the old dears this morning. I put another BBQ in an A4 envelope and had it passed as 55p as Chris had suggested. I then explained the fact that my wife had erroneously bought 30 x £1 stamps and 30 x 9p stamps for some of the others to be posted, but I had now decided to use smaller envelopes to send my letters out to send 50% of the costs. Could I therefore change my 29 remaining £1 stamps for 58 50p ones so that I could use them over the next few weeks. I explained that I would never usually use £1 stamps. She grunted something and said it would put her stocklist out (or something) and didn't have any 50p stamps anyway. The nice lady at the next window called to me that she would change my stamps. So, at least, I can now send out some copies of the BBQ, even though they will cost 59p instead of 55p, as there was no way I was going to ask for the 9p stamps to be split. Now that bugs me!

No problem Pete, he often turns up unexpectedly - a bit like a bad penny. ;) The 'bad penny' was going to call in on Sunday, after Reading, but decided to drop his passengers off first, then went home... SO.. he planned to drop it in Monday but work got in the way, Tuesday similar plus Horsham league,..... SSSOOOO....... Methinks a little trip early this evening is called for.. probably still quicker than Prince Charles (Royal male). also.. Plenty of Kipling points on offer last Sunday!!!!
