Hello to you all,
Sean and myself met up with the Merton towards the end of last week and we are most happy to confirm that the 40th World Bar Billiards Championship will be held this year at the Merton hotel over the weekend of the 6th, 7th and 8th November.
I thank all of you who responded to our straw poll request, it was wonderful to see that so many wanted the event to be held and would be supporting us.
Unfortunately, things may change over the next 3 months therefore we agreed that we will review the position at the end of September. In line with this the Merton will take bookings but will not take any payment until October just in case the worst happens, and we cannot go ahead due to Government restrictions. We will not bank entry made by cheque until October also. (see below)
The Merton Hotel will be open solely for our use that weekend and we have managed to persuade them to open on Thursday 5th as we know that many of you wish to get here a day early, but unfortunately they would not extend to Tuesday 10th therefore it is a maximum of a four night stay. Terms will be Bed and Breakfast only. Bonetti's restaurant will be open all day offering a reduced menu and some dishes from Jersey Joe's. Sunday lunch may be offered should there be sufficient numbers. The hotel has reduced their rates by £10 per night for double and family rooms, the suite rate is also reduced but you will need to enquire to find this rate - I will check on single room occupancy. Bookings can now be made, please quote the Bar Billiard Championship to ensure that they let you in:-)
To hopefully make all our lives easier we are going to amend our entry forms to provide Bank Payment details and hope that many will use this form of payment, which we ask you delay making until October. Those paying by cheque should note that we will not bank these before the final go decision has been made.
Please pass this message on to all non-forum users and hopefully we will see you all in November.
In the meantime, please stay safe and if you have any queries we will try to answer them.
Cheers Sean and Graeme

Hi Graeme, That's great news. Thanks to you and Sean for your efforts. Do you know if the reduction in room rates will apply to those of us who have already booked and paid deposits?

Good news indeed and assume those that have already paid for a stay at the Mayfair are going to be ok to stay at the Mayfair and still play in the competition

Hi Graeme, That's great news. Thanks to you and Sean for your efforts. Do you know if the reduction in room rates will apply to those of us who have already booked and paid deposits? I can confirm that the discounted rate will be applied to all of those individuals who have booked already. The Merton shall also be contacting those individuals nearer the time to take payment, therefore do not worry if October comes and they haven't phoned you yet - they will do. See you all in November Sean

One thing to mention at present in Jersey - 'outsiders' (those not residing in a venue where something is occurring) are limited to a maximum of 40, as they treat those individuals as non-contained. Both Graeme and I are hoping that this restriction will be relaxed when we move to 'level 1' restrictions but as Graeme mentioned in his post - only time will tell. Sean

Sean Thank you for clarifying the situation as it stands at the moment Sean. Think problem that those have done the deal via BA chosing the Mayfair, if the Mayfair is open then pretty sure BA will not refund, as we can travel and the hotel is available at the moment, I will probably be coming anyway. Remember BA will now being flying out of Heathrow and not Gatwick.

The Merton will not be taking payment until October time and by then we also shall have a clearer picture of the expected scenario. With regards to the Mayfair, unfortunately, as they are not connected to our tournament directly it would be up to that hotel and it is therefore out of our hands. As a general update, the Jersey government are deciding in early August whether to move to 'Level 1', which removes that '40 external person' limit.

Spoke to BA yesterday as I received an email to say my outgoing flight on the Wednesday has been changed from Gatwick to Heathrow. I called them to ask if my return flight would also be changed but they said no because on Monday 9th November it is the changeover date to go back to Gatwick - sods law!! So anyone who booked BA will be going from Heathrow and returning to Gatwick :(

Hi Sean and Graeme
Good news and still got fingers crossed we will be there. Can you tell me if the entry requirements to Jersey have changed or if they are likely to change when you move to level 1
Ie test on arrival and minimum contact till result received. If positive self isolate in jersey for 14 days
Thanks

The worrying thing is that with the latest news here is that numbers of virus infections again has increased again so be surprised if they take away the rule of maximum of 40 outsiders together😬
Also I presume if anyone does have to self isolate then I presume they would have to do it at the hotel, which could be costly.
Let’s just hope we get a cure for this deadly virus soon.

Should we hear anything we will keep you posted. Once again thanks for all your support and stay safe. cheers Graeme
