£200 for a clock! I don't mean a Rolex, seriously though we had a spring go at Burton Cons and called BB out to fix it, if it happened again we'd only need the part not the whole thing, and more to the point, the table would probably be out of action for a while, and you'd need to know what you're doing to fix it.

Am in discussion with a supplier at the moment who operates as far as Brighton area at the moment.
Offers straight rental with no share
Also offers maintenance plan on venue owned tables which looks after top, mechanism etc for a fixed monthly fee.
Does anyone want me to be enquiring around their venue?

Apologies for slightly going off subject, but I need to correct something said on the neighbouring thread which does not allow a response from little me.
It was Shaun Murphy who occasionally used to watch our team play bar billiards when he was 9 - 11 y.o. at Rushden Snooker Centre where he practised and refined his art and played league games for the one of their many snooker teams. He lived at his home town of Irthlingborough (3 miles away) at the time but never, as far as I know, played the game himself.
Steve Biggs now owns the first table that Shaun's dad bought for his private home use, and is now covered with the championship cloth that was used for the 2005 final won by Shaun.
Just thought this needed correcting in case anyone is contacting the BBC with duff information.

Good news!
Make sure they know one end of a bar billiard table from the other.
The experience down here with peripheral operators has been that you are lucky to get a traditional table and when it comes to maintenance, someone used to pool tables arrives and stands scratching their head. Poor cloth or speed cloth, poorly stretched and proud pockets have resulted.

The Oxford league had a meeting last night and someone there said they could do repairs to the clock. There was also mention about recovering at £180 (i think). I am sure that Pete Ewins will be on here later to give an overview of what was discussed.

As promised, some thoughts and details about owning your own team table.
We got ours by accident, a customer at a pub we were asking to move into offered it to me, after he overheard the landlord expressing missgivings about using Tarrats.
It needed an immediate recover. The going rate around here seems to be £180, whoever you go to. I went to Steve Mariner and he did a fantastic job.
The key issues for re-clothing seem to be: a. The right cloth type and quality b. Correct and even stretching of the cloth c. Setting in the pockets properly: too high or crooked and your balls will rim, too low and the cloth will wear prematurely around the edge of the pockets.
Our first venue with the table didn't work out. The initial siting turned out to be on the preferred route of the staff from the kitchen to the bar area, so we moved into a corner of the pool room. The pool players (not a team) would regularly shove the table to the wall and leave it there, even though it wasn't really in their way :( As the table wasn't readily playable much of the time, the take was pretty low. Then the cloth was scored by a peg (thankfully not right through and in well front of the break area) and 5 pegs went missing in two weeks, so the pegs went behind the bar which further reduced the take.
At this point I seriously started to worry that if we needed a recloth that the table income would nowhere near fund it. :(
I also taught myself woodturning and started turning my own pegs on lathes that had belonged to my late father.
After realising we also shared the pool room with a group of football fans who would take up the entire room on the night of a big match (using our table as a beer table) we moved.
Our current venue has been quite a different experience. The table is within sight of the bar (much safer!) The table is played regularly by other customers and staff, therefore the income is good. No more pegs have gone missing, even the chalk tends to stay put. 8-) Several table cues have been broken though! :o
I am now relaxed in the knowledge that if the table needs a recloth the income is there to pay for it, the table has started to pay for itself too.
Points to bear in mind:
It is helpful if one of the team has, or has access to, a van or large trailer.
You may need to store the table temporarily, eg over Christmas/New Year or if the pub is being refurbed/changing hands or because you are changing venue.
Insurance - Public Liability, the table should be covered under the venue's policy, likewise it should be covered under the contents for fire/flood etc, but this needs checking out with the venue. We keep our table locked with the key behind the bar for Health and Safety reasons.
Ask your venue to include the table lighting on their schedule of electrical safety checks.
Most landlords are likely to prefer an income sharing arrangement to a straight rental. We have a 50/50 split with our table, but made the proviso that if an emergency recloth were to be required within the first 6 months that this would be taken out before any profit sharing. Tarrats no longer offer income sharing to new venues, I believe the rental is £14 a week (plus VAT?) Another local supplier offers 40% or less to the venue, depending on the level of the take.
If you go away on holiday or on business, you will need to supply the telephone number of a team mate, who will also need to be given spare spots, Ds etc.
You will also need to allow time to regularly empty and count the cash box. 8-)
Consumables
Chalk and black spots, readily and fairly cheaply available from ebay/online snooker stores or local sports shops.
White spots, these are just paper, easily obtained from stationers.
'D's - I believe Brian Daniels told me he paid £1 each for these from BBL. I think I've now found some suitable tape (just need to check it against the BBL variety over the next two weekends' tournaments)
Light bulbs for the table lights should be supplied by the venue.
Other items which can get worn/broken/walk
Table cues, one piece ramin cues are generally about £5 each, I also managed to get some quite respectable 2 piece cues for £5.25 each in the January sales at a big sports superstore. Boot fairs are also a good source for decent second hand cues, often for a couple of pounds, especially if they are missing a tip.
Balls are available from ebay and various online suppliers for around £23 a set delivered. Aramith ball cleaner (£7-£10 delivered and lasts forever) is a good investment to keep the balls in good condition.
Pegs are £23.42 a set inc delivery from Masters games. I should be able to supply these for £16.50 a set inc postage.
Brushes, from £10 to £35 or more delivered, depending on size and quality.
********************************************
I hope all the above gives some idea what it's like to own your team table, which is mostly a very positive experience. :)
Some sort of Cooperative might be a good way of spreading the risks whilst sharing in the profits.

Hi all Just thought I'd put this link to a site I found a couple of years ago, whilst looking for spares, for a table that the late Kevin Pringle and myself were going to fit electronic timing to, which would be an answer to the clock repair situation (ask Sav as he has already done all the hard work for this). The link. www.mastersgames.com/cat/pub/bar-billiards.htm This will be where I will be getting my spares from, if our table is purchased from BB Ltd. Hope this information is useful regards Richard.

I can't say for their bar billiard tables but Supreme Pool Tables are genreally good except that do not like balls played at pace into the pockets as they appear to have invisible ghosts gaurding the pockets are random times. I know bar billiards is more of a gentle game but I am sure they will have their own qwerk as well.

This is bad news, very bad.
Can any one in Surrey tell me how many tables there in their league. I would like to purchase a few to keep it going , say 8 as a maximum.
Tommo I am sure you will be able to let me know all the facts.
Once I know how many I am talking about , I will start my negotiations with Bar Billiards Ltd.
If someone can let me know ASAP
Thanks

Letter from Ken Hussey received 3rd April as follows---
Dear Pete
Further to my earlier letter, there is one point I omitted to make. In every instance the first opportunity to purchess the table will be by the licensee of the pub/club, or in the case of a managed house the brewery.
I will be writing to all pubs and clubs in the near future to give them the opportunity to consider this option and to discuss it, where relevant with the Bar Billiards team.
I Would suggest that individual teams discuss it with their licensee. Tables will not be transferred until payment is received in full.
Yours Sincerely Ken Hussey

We had a well attended EGM in Witney last night and we seem 99% sure of all our tables (such numbers as they are) being still in place next season. Everyone has been very proactive and landlords have been gratifyingly supportive in committing to buy (as were teams if necessary BTW) and the only downside is that there is no scope for expansion in the future unless a landlord/team is prepared to buy a table. We do have a couple of venues that are non-league so need to work on those again perhaps....
Any progress in other local leagues?
cheers Tony

I have divided the list from Dave Alder as posted by Sav into Counties. Where venues are out on a limb, I’ve tried to give the ‘responsibility of care’ to an adjacent bar billiards-playing county. For example – in Surrey, only 11 tables are being talked about, whereas we have to consider the one at Godalming and also the one on the way to Epsom. But that’s up to us, if we want to let them go. Basingstoke (Hants) I have put in with Berks as it’s nearer to their leagues than to Pompey in the deep south.

Feel free to add your comments. My own preliminary conclusions are thus: 1. Unlikely that any of the Greater London tables can or will be saved. 2. Looks like the end of the road for St Albans (Herts). 3. The end of the line finally for Johnny and Cambridgeshire ? (hope I’m wrong) 4. Are Northants bothered about trying to save the one in Leicester ? 5. Not looking very good for the one in Worcester – hopefully the landlord might buy it.

In sussex (west)! There is also the Woolpack Inn Fishbourne Chichester and the Langstone conservative club.
The Woolpack table collapsed ( I do mean completely fell apart!)when the BB collector came to empty the many nuggets from its guts!
Kindly BB ltd are replacing it tomorrow.........with a table from tarrot!!
As we had already been looking to buy in the open market looks like we have missed out!! ::)

Ok, at your behest I have moved the Woolpack and the Langstone from the Hampshire section to Sussex.
As Nigel said, normally we would not to see any B-B Ltd tables marked up against Sussex. Tarratts have for long had a reciprocal agreement with B-B Ltd, whereby they don't stray onto each other's patch (Tarratts being confined to Sussex.)
Now in your case, rather late in the day, that arrangement is being honoured. Let's hope Tarratts are anxious to please, and provide you with one with a decent cloth and some nice bouncy cushions. ;)

There are bound to be some casualties, Jase.
Although in Surrey we have moved very quickly and are at an advanced stage of negotiation with our rescue package, we only plan to take on the tables which are in the Redhill League area.
Thus the bottom two on our list sadly we will not be doing anything about. Margo and I will probably visit the Squirrel and the Bell this month to have a last go on them while the opportunity's still there.

Well done Witney :) :) :) Still ongoing in the Oxford League cheers Tony
