The 7th Guernsey Open was staged over the same weekend and in an all-Channel Islands Final, Guernsey’s Bob Chapple beat Jersey’s Bob King. In fact it was almost a ‘clean sweep’ for Guernsey who followed up the previous weekend's Inter-Insular triumph over Jersey with a creditable performance against England on Saturday night: Then after providing both sets of Open Pairs finalists on Saturday they provided an amazing three of the four Singles semi-finalists on Sunday: Rare mainland success was however found in the form of the highest break awards, which went to Dave Ingram for the men and our own Lorraine Hall for the ladies. – Clive T

Mid Sussex’s Ros Appleby was a semi-finalist in the British Isles Ladies Championship at Salfords Club, Horley,, won by Surrey’s Denise Wills. More to follow…………

Singles Champion Bob Hall heralded his departure from the Mid Sussex League (henceforward he will ply his trade in Brighton on Wednesday nights) with a Semi-Final place in the National Off-the-Spot Open, held at the Suburban Club, Chatham last Sunday.

The event was won by locally-based Mark Brewster who has been in Finals before but this was his first Open event win after ten years of trying.

Mark beat 'daunting' Dave Ingram in the Quarter-finals, then a narrow win over Bob was followed by a Final win over the current World Champion, Mark Trafford of Oxfordshire.

En route to the Semi-Final, Bob had registered good wins over Sussex Under-30 Champ Mike Daw and former star from the past Kevin Clark. – Clive T

The World Championships took place in Jersey over the weekend of 8/9 November, the dust has now settled and our players are now back on terra firma having performed well in singles and pairs……..
The Hall family, now based at The Hassocks, had a great championships with varied achievements, Lorraine Hall reaching the last 32 (from 132 who had entered) and winning the Gina Sherratt Memorial Trophy for being the furthest lady in the competition. Sons Rob and Kev also had a slice of glory, Rob achieving runner-up in the World Championship Plate Competition (to Nigel Senior) and Kev reaching the Semi-Final of the World Pairs with Kevin Tunstall before losing to eventual winners Jim Millward and Trevor Gallienne. There were also last 16 appearances in the Pairs for Derek Taylor & Rob Hall.and Brewbells’ Neil Higgins & Paul Barnett, with HHUSC B’s Colin Robbins going one better by reaching the Quarter-finals along with his Surrey partner Gary Powell.
The other main faction in the Mid Sussex camp – the Brewbells – performed particularly well in the Group stages of the Singles, with Neil Higgins and Paul Barnett winning their respective groups and Trevor Appleby being runner up in his – to Henry Brooks of all people, although Ros Appleby could only manage a third place. This in itself was an achievement as she was in a group with two former world champions and managed to beat one of them (Bernie McCluskey)……important to remember too that Ros had comprehensively beaten the new World Champ (Dave Ingram) in a league match a week earlier ! Meanwhile in the Group stages Colin Robbins won his group from the three Guernseymen and Lorraine finished second behind Jersey’s Nigel Ryall but qualified at the expense of former England International Chris Newson.
With play re-commencing on the Sunday, Paul Barnett lost to Horsham’s Stephen Hopkins and Neil Higgins lost to England captain Curt Driver, whilst Curt’s teammate Gerry Fitzjohn ended Trevor Appleby’s great run. Both Colin and Lorraine managed to get through one more round, Colin beating Horsham’s Rob Jones before falling to Berkshire’s Andy Burns and Lorraine beating Jersey’s Dave Gallichan before another England player Mark Brewster ended her run. – Clive T

On Saturday 28th Feb it was the turn of Mid Sussex Ladies, who achieved a creditable 3rd place behind winners Redhill A and runners-up Brighton A. The team was captained by Ros Appleby who reports thus:
“Thanks to Dave for yet another extremely well run day yesterday. Congratulations to worthy winners Redhill A. Very well done to Mid Sussex ladies, who had their best result for several years. An excellent debut for Jan Smith - collecting her first ever Sussex ranking points. Thanks also to Marion and Darrell, whose help with our team's admin and score collecting helped us enormously.” -Ros

The records show that, for Mid Sussex, Jenny Edwards achieved 8 wins out of 10 Jan Bithell and Ros Appleby 6 wins each and Jan Smith and Fenella Fisher 4 wins each. Page 43 of the website has been updated with the results from both weekends accordingly. - Clive T

The Sussex Under-30s and Sussex Masters competitions were held on Sat 13th June at Roffey and each ran a Plate competition in which a Mid Sussex player featured in the final stages. Rob Hall continued a good tradition in the U-30s, winning the Plate having been a previous semifinalist, whilst Nick Brown was runner-up in the Masters Plate to Hastings’s Mike Daw. On the Sunday it was the turn of the Sussex Open, and Rob along with HHUSC B’s Paul Jobbins reached the Plate quarterfinals. – Clive T.

The Hall family of Mid Sussex had an exceptional weekend at the annual Sussex Doubles and Singles championships, held last weekend at Hurstpierpoint SC. Hassocks Hotel’s Lorraine Hall became Sussex Ladies Champion beating Michelle Baden in the Semi-Final and daughter-in-law Sandra Hall in the Final to land a double: a day earlier she partnered Ros Appleby to finish runners-up in the Ladies Doubles (round robin) to Michelle Baden and Sue Mariner.
Son Kevin Hall, with “substitute” partner Gareth Lloyd, was runner-up in the Mens Doubles to Ian Lelliott and Geoff Jukes, following a memorable Semi-Final win over his mentor Kevin Tunstall and Martin Cole by a 35,590 margin over 3 legs ! What a contrast to the other semi-final, where Colin Robbins and Tony Cross missed out by a mere 290 !
Rob Hall completed a successful set of Doubles awards for the Halls when he partnered England captain Curt Driver to win the Plate title from Jim Greensted and Gerry Fitzjohn. But Jim prevailed over Bob the next day in Round 3 of the Singles after Rob had beaten Horsham players Dick Dewdney (11380-11290) and Stuart Carruthers (10040-9800) in the first two rounds.
Brewers’ Nick Brown progressed to the last sixteen with an amazing 40k from 4 legs, but then lost to another Horsham player, Adam Kuzimski. The competition was eventually won by Brighton’s Jim Millward, with Gareth Lloyd runner-up. – Clive T

Mid Sussex A won Div 2 of the Sussex One-day Interleague on Sunday, earning themselves a return to the top division in a year’s time. Horsham A finished second despite being a player short for every match. Other positions were Lewes (3rd); Billingshurst (4th) and West-Sussex (5th).
Mid Sussex gave Barry West (Hassocks B) a first successful try-out, the remaining team members being Lorraine Hall, Andy Farmer-Wright, Derek Taylor, Peter Edwards, Dilly Williamson and Bob Hall. Bob was top performer of the day, the only player to win all of his 8 frames. A day earlier the B’s had found the going tough, finishing bottom despite captain Ros Appleby winning four of her five frames. – Clive T

Superchef and occasional Mid Sussex league player for HHUSC B Colin Robbins was in top form over the weekend when he celebrated his first Guernsey Open with a Quarter-final place and pay cheque of £90. Wins over Cliff Slade (Bucks); Jean Brackenridge (Brighton) and Jon Bamsey (Oxon) were eventually followed by defeat at the hands of Worthing youngster Martin Cole who went on to win his first Open. – Clive T

The 23rd Sussex Open was played yesterday and HHUSC B player Paul Jobbins reached the last sixteen with two good wins over Worthing’s Dave Jones and Tony Jenner before falling to former world champ Mark Trafford (Oxon). The event was won by Kent’s Curt Driver with Dave Ingram runner-up.
Earlier Kevin Hall had impressed in beating first Keith Sheard and then Kevin Tunstall and even leading the current world champion Paul Sainsbury by 10,000 from the first leg. However Paul was able to chase down the target with a chanceless 12,500 break. Andy Farmer-Wright reached the last eight of the Plate, won by Colin Southouse.
On the Saturday, Brighton’s Nigel Senior won his third Sussex Masters title whilst earlier in the day, Worthing’s Martin Cole won his second Sussex Under 30s title in his last year of qualification – beating our own Bob Hall in the Final. – Clive T

On Sunday Bob Hall reached the Semi-Final of the Kent Open 2016 - A tremendous achievement, one to match perhaps his Interleague 20k break and Mid Sussex Singles title of a couple of years ago.
Having disposed of young superstar Martin Cole in the quarter-finals he went down to the eventual winner, Mark Trafford from Oxfordshire, in the Semi.

A measure of Mark’s tenacity can be seen from how he fared in the final: having watched his opponent Nigel Senior play out the first leg for 20,050, Mark replied with only 5500, but was able to return to the table to make 15,500 on his second visit to clinch the title !
It is the first known instance of a player winning the High Break Award in a Final with a table run out - without actually winning. – Clive T

This week saw Bob Hall land a unique double in Hall and Woodhouse-sponsored awards: on Tuesday with brother Kev he was a runner-up in Horsham’s revived King & Barnes Doubles, open to players throughout Sussex and Surrey, and each received an engraved clock, whilst on Wednesday he was part of a three-man Eastbourne Hospital SC team which won the H & W Sussex 4-Pin league. Darren Newnham and Dave Knight were runners-up with the Black Lion, Halland - their first attempt at playing this obscure version of the game.

Windmill Crawley’s Jim Greensted followed up Wednesday night’s 19k league match playout with a star performance at the Sussex Singles and Doubles championships held at the weekend at the Hurstpierpoint Club: On Sunday it was the turn of the Singles and Jim made it to the Final.

Andy Farmer-Wright (CKRBL) and Richard Wooton (HHUSC A) both made it to the 3rd Round (last 16): Andy had wins over Hastings’ Dave White (5660 – 4260) and Hassocks A’s Darren Newnham (8480 – 3520) before meeting Kevin, who beat him 18580 to 5480. Meanwhile, Richard carried on his good work of the day before by eclipsing two former World Champions, Dave Ingram 13900 – 620 and Jim Millward 17050 – 680. At this point, however, his former Brighton buddy Gareth Lloyd exacted revenge from the Doubles, beating him by 18030 to 12410.

The Ladies Singles was also played, with eight competitors: the first round threw together doubles partners Lorraine Hall (Hassocks A) and Ros Appleby (Brewers) with Lorraine victorious by 5340 to 4400 before going on to lose her Semi-Final against Michelle Baden with Jean Brackenridge – who had earlier put out Plough’s Jan Bithell - then beating Michelle for the title.

Richard Wooton (HHUSC A) was star of the show: he teamed up to win the event with former Mid-Sussex player Dave Ingram, now based in Brighton (a reverse of Richard !)

Mid Sussex teams were involved on both days in the weekend’s Interleague championships and battled bravely, the B’s avoiding bottom spot on the Saturday and the A’s preserving their 1st Div status on the Sunday. Ros Appleby once again had the best record for the B’s with 4 wins from 6, whilst Richard Wooton was a star performer for the A’s with 4 out of 5 and an average of 9980 on the day.

On Saturday it was the turn of the Ladies Interleague, and Mid Sussex finished a close third behind Redhill A but out of reach of champions Brighton A by a considerable margin. Worthing, returning after a 4-year absence, were fourth and Brighton B had bottom spot. Captain Ros Appleby won 5 games from 8 and Jan Bithell went one better with 6 wins. 4/5 March was the weekend of the National Pairs, a condition of entry being residency at the Queens Hotel, Bournemouth…….local hopes were terminated by former winners Nigel Senior and Marcus Chipman, who beat Bob Hall and Jack Baden in the quarterfinals and then Richard Wooton and Gareth Lloyd in the semis. A good run nonetheless for both.

A perfect frame for his team was made tonight by Hassocks A’s Bob Hall: an opening 11800 break with touch-up on first visit and then next visit a 9190 play out for a sensational score of 20990.
This takes over as the fourth highest ever made in the league from the 20,300 by Richard Wooton at HHUSC earlier this season. Only Richard and Laughing Fish’s Henry Brooks have ever scored more. – Clive T

Windmill duo Jim Greensted and Clive Thompson were in action at Sudbury on Saturday for the Fifth East Anglian 4-Pin Open. Jim won his opening group of four convincingly, winning all his games and defeating last year’s champion Chris Saville on the way. He then lost a tight match against Oxon’s Keith Sheard who was the eventual runner-up.
Clive scraped through his group, a three-way tie, on aggregate, but then won again to reach the Last 16, one of five Sussex players to do so. The competition was won by Nigel Senior who became the first person to win the event twice. – Clive T.

The 3rd Sussex County Off-the-Spot took place on Saturday at Roffey Club, and early running was made by Rob Hall and Andy Farmer-Wright, winner and runner-up in their qualifying groups respectively. Both had tough draws at the last 16 stage, however, and Rob was beaten by Gareth Lloyd and Andy – in a closer match – by Dave Ingram.
There were good runs in the Plate for Ros Appleby and Paul Jobbins before both went out at the Semi-Final stage: Ros defeated Ian Cross and then Stuart Carruthers before falling to eventual winner Phil Osborne, whilst Paul overcame Stephen Hopkins and then Lee Cable before losing to the runner-up Kyle Ingram. – Clive T

Jan Bithell and Lorraine Hall both made the Quarter finals of the 2017 British Isles Ladies Open played on Sunday at Roffey Club, after Jan topped Group B and Lorraine finished 2nd in Group D. Both ladies were defeated by an eventual Finalist: Lorraine by Winner Jean Brackenridge and Jan by runner-up Colleen Park. Ros Appleby - who had finished third in Jan’s group – then went on to win the Plate, defeating Oxon’s Melissa Standbridge 7280-5990 in the two-leg Final.

Hassocks A’s Bob Hall won a high quality Bucks Open Plate Final yesterday, overturning the 12k lead that Steven Sheard (Oxon) had built. With Steven's break to come it looked curtains for Bob but an early miss from Steven let Bob in and he made an excellent 15k break for the win. Well done Bob. Bob had beaten Dawn Jordan in one semi and Steven had beaten reigning World Champion Matt Jones in the other. Brighton’s Nigel Senior made it a Sussex double, beating Hampshire’s Lee Radford in the main event. - Matt Knight, SCBBA

Bob Hall was part of the Sussex A side which finished runners-up to a strong Kent team in the County Championships (Div One) held at Didcot on Sunday. Oxon A finished third by a point, with Sussex B taking fourth place just ahead of Berkshire and Northants with a somewhat depleted Surrey being relegated. High spot for Bob was his 10,360 break made against the England captain Curt Driver, inflicting his sole defeat !
Div Two will take place next week and will include two Ladies’ teams which for the first time have been amalgamated with the men.

Div Two of the County Championships took place at the weekend at Didcot and for the first time included Ladies’ teams – Sussex and Oxford - now amalgamated with the men.
Hampshire were convincing winners with Buckinghamshire A the runners-up. Sussex Ladies finished bottom of the pile but the Mid Sussex contingent of Ros, Lorraine and Jan managed to hold their own, yielding 8 of Sussex’s 14 points. The four Brighton ladies returned 6 wins, 5 of them coming from the cue of captain Jean.

Congratulations to Windmill Z’s Jim Greensted, runner-up to Kent’s Paul Sainsbury in the All-England Individuals held on Sunday at Arborfield Royal British Legion, Berkshire.

In the final Paul lost the toss and was put in but ran the table out for 20,030. Jim was off at around 2k but got them back and got another 11k before missing and shaking Paul’s hand. Incredibly this is Paul’s fourth win in this competition in 4 different decades, but it left Jim one game away from being English champion….

Jim had been called upon to represent Sussex on the basis of being runner-up in the 2017 Sussex Singles competition to Kevin Tunstall who was unable to attend.

The competition was played in two round robin groups, one of four and one of five, with double legs. Jim was in a group of five and first beat Dave Alder (Berks) 26560-0, then Mark Trafford (Oxon) 19500-8850, then Simon Coleman (Northants) 22950-370 and finally Morgan Wright (Cambs) 22160-3960 - not losing a single frame until the final, and at a massive average per leg of 11,396 !!

Brighton’s Jean Brackenridge won the Ladies’ equivalent event, with Oxon’s Pauline Withey runner up, Jean not losing a single game all day. – Clive T

So how did our players fare in Jersey’s 2017 World Championships?
Gary Ridley, BHCC – Runner-up in what many thought a group of death Group 12 behind Paul Sainsbury (but confining Colin Southouse and Lorin Clough to the Plate) then in next round of the Main lost narrowly 5840-6760 to Guernsey’s Gary Naftel
Richard Wooton, HHUSC A – Max Points Winner of Group 1 vs Paul Newton/Alan Mepham/John Miller, then in Main beat Alfie Millward 10060-1810 but eventually lost to Worthing’s Geoff Jukes 2710-9630 in the last 32.
There was however a good showing in the Plate Competition from four of our players:
Graham Sparksman, HHUSC A –3rd in Group 10. Then in Plate beat Sean Le Beuvant 5430-4460 then beat Ros Appleby 3980-2260 but then lost to Lorraine Hall 3340-6470 in the Last 16
Ben Procter, HHUSC A – 4th in Group 15. Then in Plate beat Paul Barnett 2510-1040 then beat Tony Jenner 3390-180 then lost to eventual winner Richard Corbould 3580-6500 in the Last 16
Lorraine Hall, Hassocks A – 3rd in Group 2. Then in Plate beat Vince Brown 4120-810 then beat Paul Le Gallez 3090-2330 then beat Graham Sparksman 6470-3340 then lost to eventual runner-up, Northants’ Stephen Coleman 6560-8470 in the Quarter-final.
Bob Hall, Hassocks A – 4th in Group 5. Then in Plate beat Bob Le Moignan 3830-1970 then beat Ian Cross 6380-0 then beat Paul Butcher 7450-3050 then lost to eventual winner, Kent’s Richard Corbould 2080-11370 in the Quarter-final.

The 2017 World Champion is Oxfordshire’s Mark Trafford, with Kevin Tunstall the Runner-up.
In the World Doubles, started a day earlier, Richard Wooton, with partner Gareth Lloyd, made it all the way to the Final, but lost to Worthing/Littlehampton pair Kevin Tunstall and Martin Cole
There was also a Last 16 place for BHCC’s Neil Higgins and Paul Barnett who safely negotiated two rounds before falling to the eventual winners. – Clive T

8 Jan 2018 Sussex Singles and Doubles Competitions - played 6th and 7th January 2018 at BHCC.
Windmill Z’s Jim Greensted and Plough’s Ric Bithell were among the big hitters in the Sussex Mens Singles, won by Brighton’s Mark James from first-timer West Sussex’s Christian Cox.

In the Quarter-Finals Phil Osborne continued his good run of form to beat Ric Bithell, Phil recording a break of 11,810 on the way; Mark James played (the tricky) table 2 out for 15,410, Nigel missed early and Mark made sure next visit. Chris Cox beat Rick Dewdney to progress, and Dave Ingram used up all his "Get Out Of Jail Free" cards to beat Stuart Carruthers on the last ball. The Final saw Mark James, with first break, off the table on a disappointing 2130, Chris got the balls back and ran the table out with 11,150 - with his break to come. Chris repaid the compliment: off on only 1820, Mark then wound in a superb break of 13,710 to claim his 4th Sussex Men's Singles title. - Dave Ingram, SCBBA Tournaments Director

In the Ladies Singles, also played on Sunday, Jan Bithell (Plough) finished 4th and Ros Appleby (BHCC) 5th in a 6-way round robin won by Brighton’s Jean Brackenridge . Both ladies managed two wins.
In the Sussex Doubles Competitions, played a day earlier on the Saturday, Jean Brackenridge, partnering Sandra Hall, was again a winner in the Ladies, with Ros Appleby, partnering Michelle Baden, a runner-up. Jean and Sandra won both matches of a 3-way round robin, with Ros and Michelle winning one and losing one.
The Men’s event was won by Brighton’s Nigel Senior & Chris Tupper - they beat HHUSC’s Richard Wooton partnering Dave Ingram in the final.
BHCC’s Neil Higgins made the quarter-final, partnering Martin Smith, before losing to the eventual winners. Richard had 4 of the top breaks of the day, including 17030 in the Semi and 11380 in leg 2 of the Final.
Rob Hall (Hassocks A) and Jim Greensted (Windmill Z) made it to the Plate Semi-Final, but were heavily defeated by runners-up Stuart Mepham and Chris Newson. Winners were Ian Lelliott and Geoff Jukes, who beat BHCC's Terry Molloy partnering Gerry Fitzjohn in the other semi. – Clive T

Strong Brighton teams finished first and second in the B/C teams’ section of the SCBBA One-day Interleague played on Saturday at the new venue the Burgess Hill Constitutional Club: For Mid Sussex ‘B’, Ian Giffen and Ros Appleby both had successful days with 4 wins out of 6 games played. Paul Jobbins and Paul Moyes-Robb were close behind with 3 wins each, helping the team to improve on last year’s finish by one place. Final placings: 1. Brighton B 28pts; 2.Brighton C 27pts; 3.Worthing B 24pts; 4. Redhill B 21pts; 5. Mid Sussex B 19pts; 6.Worthing C 14pts; 7.Hastings B 14pts.

Mid Sussex Ladies scored a rare success, finishing runners-up to Redhill in the Ladies Interleague played on Saturday at the new venue the Burgess Hill Constitutional Club: Being a player short, Lewes’s Zoe Stoner was allowed to step in, but this move proved to be beneficial as she was one of the day’s best performers.
For Mid Sussex, Ros Appleby won 5 out of 6 games played, Jan Bithell and Zoe 4 each, Jenny Edwards 3 wins and Lorraine Hall 2 wins. It is the first time since 1993 that Mid Sussex have finished above Brighton in the competition. Final placings: 1. Redhill 20pts; 2. Mid Sussex 18pts; 3. Brighton 16pts; 4. West-Sussex 6pts

Whilst the ladies are no doubt still buoyant, the Mid Sussex ‘A’ team will be having that sinking feeling as they finished bottom of the pack in the 1-Day Interleague Division One (A teams).
Hassocks trio Derek Taylor (5 wins) Bob Hall (4 wins) and Pete Edwards (4 wins) did however manage to break even on the day. BHCC duo Terry Molloy and Nick Brown were part of the winning Worthing team.
Final placings: 1. Worthing A 36pts; 2. Brighton A 33pts; 3. Tunbridge Wells 31pts; 4. West-Sussex 22pts; 5. Mid Sussex A 18pts.

Windmill Z duo Jim Greensted and Clive Thompson were in action at Sudbury on Saturday for the 6th East Anglian 4-Pin Open played at the Masonic Hall, Sudbury on 24th March:
In a competition made more difficult this year by the use of authentic Narrow SAMS tables, Suffolk players topped 10 of the 16 qualifying groups, with Sussex players Tony Jenner, Ric Cunningham and Clive being three of the other six.
Jim – along with several other former achievers - struggled, suffering the ignominy of finishing last in an admittedly strong group. Clive once again disappointingly lost in the second round of the Main – a one-leg “sudden death” - as did Ric, with Tony advancing one more stage before falling to the strong Phil Osborne. - Clive T

The 10th Surrey Open took place on Sunday the 8th and Windmill Z’s Clive Thompson bounced back from a first round reversal to Dave Ingram by 9770 – 15010 (the latter’s last mainland event before emigrating to the Canaries) by having a good run in the Plate, beating Tony Webster 9340-1030, Anita Blackman 4980-4520, then Rob Jones 9640-5160 before losing a tough Semi-Final 3840-14530 to eventual winner and former Surrey teammate Geoff Jukes.
Meanwhile BHCC’s Ros Appleby picked up valuable National Ranking Points by winning her First Round match, beating Buckinghamshire’s Dawn Jordan before falling to Hastings’s Bob Osborne. – Clive T

The 2018 Oxfordshire Open (originally set for 10th Feb) finally took place on Sunday the 22nd and Hassocks player Bob Hall bounced back from a first round reversal, where he lost to the World Champion Mark Trafford 11010 -20660, with a good run in the Plate: First he beat Hastings’s Dave White 7260 – 1510, then Brighton’s Michelle Baden 5990 – 4000 before coming up against Worthing’s Ian Lelliott in the Semi-Final, which Ian won 12930 – 620. Trafford beat Keith Sheard – also from Oxford – in the Main Final – Clive T

The Burgess Hill CC trio of Neil Higgins, Gary Ridley and Paul Barnett had mixed fortunes in the Guernsey Open played over the 5th/6th May Bank Holiday weekend.
All received first round Byes and had good second round wins, with Barnett beating the uber-strong Dave Ingram 8600-4820 and Ridley taking out Jersey evergreen Harry Barbet 9080-3200 before losing to Higgins 4800-5960. Higgins had earlier beaten Richard Hawes (Bucks) 5180-3990.
However the 2016 World Champion Matt Jones (Bucks) proved to be a hurdle too difficult to overcome, beating Barnett 15500-470 and then Higgins 18570-3270. Matt eventually suffered defeat at the hands of current World Champ Mark Trafford who in turn was defeated by Guernsey's number one Trevor Gallienne for the title. – Clive T

Bob Hall, a relative newcomer to the 4-Pin version of the game which is steadily gaining in popularity, came away with one of the top prizes in the National 4-Pin Championship held on Saturday at the Cock Hotel, Northampton. Drawn in probably the strongest group, Bob had four tough games before earning the right to continue in the Plate by winning a playoff. Four more won legs saw him through to the Semi-Final where he beat Northants’ Dunc Harris who he had faced earlier in the group. The experience of organiser Lorin Clough proved too much in the Final though, so Bob finished Plate Runner-up, earning an impressive trophy and cash prize for his efforts.
Windmill Z’s Clive Thompson safely negotiated the group stages to make the Last 16 of the Main comp, but fell in a high-scoring match to eventual winner Chris Saville.
The next day the two Mid Sussex-ers faced each other in the 8th Northants Open, with Bob beating Clive. But that proved to be the end of the line for both of them, Saturday maybe taking its toll. - Clive T

Well done to Hassocks A’s Bob Hall who lost narrowly (14480 - 17600) to Kevin Tunstall in the final of the Surrey Open, played at Salfords Club, Horley on Sun 7th April. The final was live-streamed on RDBBL’s Facebook site.
For Kevin it was his fourth Surrey Open win. But for Bob his first appearance in a Major National Final – could be the first of many ?
KT beat Phil Osborne in one Semi-Final, whilst Bob beat the highly-rated Nigel Senior in the other.
The Plate was won by Kent’s Gerry Fitzjohn, who beat Jim Greensted 13880 – 7390 over two legs.             - Clive T

27 Apr 2019 - Sussex Mixed Doubles R-u for Lorraine and Bob.
Well done to Michelle Baden and Nigel Senior on winning the Sussex Mixed Doubles with Lorraine and Bob Hall finishing runners-up.
In the first Semi, Hall and Hall beat Jean Brackenridge and Matthew Knight 2-0 at the Watermill.
In the other Semi, Ros Appleby and Phil Osborne were drawing 1-1 with Baden and Senior at Watermill, before circumstances dictated that a transfer of venue was found necessary, with Baden and Senior winning the decider at CKRBL

06 May 2019 Guernsey Open - how they fared
Gary Ridley and Ros Appleby returned from Guernsey with an element of satisfaction over their performances: Gary made it to the Last 16 before losing to semi-finalist James Jeanne (current Jersey island champion). Whereas Ros found Guernsey International Terry Kenny too strong in the Main but had a good run in the Plate, making it all the way to the Semi-final – where she only narrowly lost. Neil Higgins made it to round three of the Main but lost to another semi-finalist, Guernsey’s Ian Champion. This year’s Guernsey Open was won by Dave Ingram, who cut his teeth in Mid Sussex but is now permanently resident in Tenerife.
